Post War Era #2: Lukari Species

pwlaughingtrendypwlaughingtrendy Member Posts: 2,966 Arc User
Today we will begin our study of the Sun’s strange behavior. Chief among the questions we’re asking is if this recent reduction in luminosity is part of a larger cycle or if it is permanent.

I am thankful, if somewhat surprised, that the Science Council approved all my personnel requests

Interesting read as well. Any chance we will see them as a Bridge Officer?

I suddenly get this feeling that the dear administrator will try to take all the credit for everything WE'VE done to save face for the failed solar probe project and to advance her own career.

    Hope I'm wrong

Yeah - from what we've seen thus far, I actually really like the Lukari; I realise that making them a playable species is too much to hope, but having one as a BOFF would be great!

I certainly like them better than the Deferi thus far--the Deferi "balance" garbage (but we want YOU to come save our pacifist butts!) was really annoying. The Lukari may have 22nd century tech, but they were giving it their all before we showed up.

Definitely better than the Deferi. Surah lies to us to bring us to Defera, then basically sits back and has us do all the work, whereas Kumaarke actually had a plan ready and working, all she needed was a pair of course corrections.

Plus she has a sexy voice :p

Exactly: she was proactive. It's just that her ideas were better than her tech allowed.

Though there is one thing that bothers me a bit--and I'm going to call out the character of Burgess as another flagrant example: I would recommend Cryptic please instruct voice actors not to attempt a British accent if it is not either a) their native accent or b) one they are VERY good with to the point of being near indistinguishable from a native speaker. It was definitely noticeable with Kumaarke that the voice actor was putting on an accent rather than it sounding natural.

I think the closest we got to a "proper" British accent in game is Gaius Selan, but I am not sure even that one was quite right.

We could put that down to the universal translator glitching a bit on the accent for ICly. I mean almost no one (outside of the humans) in the galaxy actually speak OUR native english language!

Hmm...maaaybe, though I would expect voice synthesis to be much improved in the 400 years between now and then. Also doesn't help with the other "accent offender," Burgess. ;)

Arguably, voice synthesis doesn't have to conform to a specific accent, so 'Fauxish' is a perfectly valid accent.

I love this species a lot more than all the others, they've introduced.. Mostly because of the fact, they are a lot more proactive than the Defari... because they were just lazy and wanted to protect their planet even though they didn't want to do anything about the BORG if you didn't do their sub-mission in the first part of the 2800 missions..

Also it is kinda nice that Kal Dano is apart of that race too. =P
The Rising of the Delta is the best expansion ever, and people love it to death because it is a good day to die in the endless struggle for supremacy of your own conviction. (A spin off of the Delta Rising is the best expansion ever and all the players love it.)

A Secret Report Within The Guild

    --[]----[]----[]--
This current blog post reminds me of another Great Game that I own but have not played in about 12 years:

    STAR TREK BRIDGE COMMANDER
See the intro movie to that game right here:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7JXoMRjPcR0
This is Star Trek: Bridge Commander. It was developed by Totally Games and published by Activision in 2002. You play the role of a captain of a starship, and it's something of a space-simulation game. It has a huge and very active modding community, and it's certainly worth checking out, if you can find it.

Bridge Commander was a Totally game too? Interesting...

Sounds like a lot of good games (don't have this one, but love the X-Wing series) were their doing.

I actually liked her voice acting (the accent sounded more posh New England than British to me, by the way). I did however not like the cardassian scientist's voice acting. I was actually quite annoyed by it. She kept stressing the wrong words, almost like she was trying to do a "Reverse Kirk". You know, instead of "The quick brown... fox, jumped over the... lazy dog" she would go "The quick brown! Fox? Jumped over the lazy! Dog?" Michael Dorn did the same thing (surprisingly), but to a lesser extent.

That said, I liked the episode. A bag of cookies to the team for the TNG reference ;-)

No worries about Kumaarke taking the credit.
One, she give the impression of being earnest in her activities and
two, the Tholians appear and start blasting away. She herself admits her world has nothing to stand against them, so whom, dear reader, would she convince that she single-handedly drove them off? Besides, a warp capable species would have telescopes, and I'll bet they got an eyeful. probably ended up as blurry footage on LNN.

I have to agree with the other thus far; If this one individual is a fair representation of her world then the Lukari are a refreshing change from what we met in the Delta Quadrant, and for the most part, the "alpha" quadrant. (Betazed excluded, of course)

And yes, a Doff or Boff with traits like Kumaarke would be agreeable. Besides, I imagine that since the future Temporal Agent has Lukari ancestry, it goes to reason that the Lukari join the Federation at some point in the future and that they intermingle with other races. Thus it is no stretch of the imagination to think that Lukari would be found serving aboard starships. If Nog can do it, so can Kumaarke.

As for the "accent", its not outside the realms of possibility that Kumaarke's native language just happens to sound like a bad british accent to us, but sounds like perfectly spoken Lukari to everyone else. It's very xenophobic to insist that all the people in the galaxy MUST be measured against Earth standards. Beside the U.T. only allows for gender distinctions, not accents, no matter how many times the Update universal translator Doff mission shows up.

Who is Kumaarke's voice actress? Because I could listen to her pretty much all day and night. If I'm Tony Stark, then she's my Friday. The only thing is either intentionally or by nature she sounded very...seductive. Which is frankly delightful, if I never heard Ilia speak, I'd say that's what Deltans sound like.

As for her accent I adore it and don't really care where it came from.

As for the Lukari species, I dig. Good look, if she's any indication, very level headed species. They seem to have contentment down. Happy where they are in the universe and not looking for more. Considering how many resources we humans consume with approaching the same number of people, the fact that they have everything they need I'm very impressed.

Though it appears that this storyline will take us away from the Lukari homeworld, I sincerely hope we meet them again.

And I don't see any reason for her to take credit, especially when her species is aware of other extra-Lukaririal lifeforms. And I must give kudos to them for learning their lesson with the Ferengi so quickly.

I kind of want to see that debriefing meeting however.

"Doctor, the sun reignited, what happened up there? Two alien vessels approached us drawn by our star's drastic change in disposition and offered their aid, restoring normal fusion. Our sun was attacked by a third alien species, trying to draw out one of the vessels for their technology. The first to respond is a very friendly species who are interested in opening relations with us and a mutual cultural exchange."

    "What did they charge?"

"Nothing sirs, apparently the Ferengi are somewhat unique in that regard. They never asked for anything but our hand in friendship. They want to get to know us."

    "Imagine that."

I do want to believe that the Lukari fit the bill, but consider this:

IIRC from the episode, there are ~8 billion souls living on that moon. That number alone suggests to me a strain on available resources, and they don't appear to have the capacity and infrastructure to boost their economy / industry through their system's natural resources. It appears to have taken a lot of (commendable) effort from their part to excavate that lone rock from the gas giant's ring.

Although Kuumaarke certainly has no lack of vision, despite pooling much of Lukari Prime's (call me if you have a better name for it at this point ^^) resources together, her project suffered from lack of resources and technology from the start, and she probably had a lot of strain on her shoulders from the government as well.

In light of all that, what would you say in your final report to your government?
    • The solar probe was a total failure, every invested resource went down the drain, and we were saved by outsiders.
    • The probe did it's job, and we've made contact with some guys who were curious about our star's condition in the meantime.

I need to get to know more Lukari before allowing myself a more positive attitude about them.
    - Though the fact that they had a proactive approach to the problem regardless of their situation, and that they backed away from the Ferengi after just one scam-attempt is a good start.

Maybe it's just me, shooting waaaa[...]aaaay off the mark XD
