This is a ZEN based option I'd like to suggest to Cryptic for STO.
Create apartments for our Captains on specific worlds. To get to those apartments, we have to warp over to the respective world. There can be a transwarp option if desired.
Basic Apartment: 500 zen. You select the world, but it has to be your faction. Character unlock only. Access to mail only. Having account bank unlocked will grant you access to the bank as well. Apartment has a small window, a desk, bed, and washroom behind a locked door. Decor is sparse. View is countryside. It's also adjustable depending on the world, and what you have unlocked and what world. Can be sunset, sunrise, pretty fields of flowers, a farm, the Forge, etc. Unlocking options cost Zen. We gotta pay Taco somehow.
Family Apartment, intro additional 500 Zen or 1,000. The apartment is located in a small, semi active city. Bedroom is larger with a tailor, bank, mail. Desk has a viewscreen behind it and is larger. Living room is included with a couch and two love seats. A guest room adjorns the place. Washroom is locked.
Family Apartment, lived in Additional 500 zen, or 1,500. The Apartment is like a condo. Three bedrooms. One is open for you to enter. children toys litter the floor. You can create your own family, each person taking up a off duty uniform slot. The bathroom is still locked. Curse your teenager for hogging the shower.
Luxury High Rise Additional 1000 zen or 2,500. The apartment is in the capital city of the planet. The view reveals the city, shuttles zooming by, a night life. Access to the exchange is allowed. Choose between a family styled apartment or your own. One bedroom apartment reveals a larger office, living room. Three bedroom apartment has smaller living spaces but all three rooms are open. Decorate it as you want. Items can be found in the zen shop with varying prices as low as 50 zen. Bedsheets, posters, etc.
Presidential Residence (whatever, can vary depending on faction) 5,000 Zen or an additional 2,500. Options are the same as the high rise, however you get a lot more items included in the bundle for decorations and you can design the room a bit (with preset layouts). Want a pool? Done! Disco bar? Done! You have your own personal aide in the next room that you can design, again from the tailor shop. The aide is your vendor, selling you items, or you can unload your inventory. Federation would have the aide in a uniform, but Klingons can go wild! Want your own personal Orion Slave Girl?? The aide is also a doff assignment officer giving you access to all the doff missions on that world, or sector space. The aide can heal you or arrange for your ship to be fixed. You can switch starships here as well. You get two free relocations. The bathroom is open. There's a luxury bathtub, toilet, shower stall.
What are the benefits? Small items for improving your home can be bought from the Zen shop. Additional tailor outfits would be in demand, especially for those wanting a family or to redesign their aide if they go the Presidential Residence. To change worlds, you need to pay 150 zen, each time. Taco can design apartments in the style of the planet. Bajoran, Vulcans, Andorian, Klingon, Orion, etc. Orion could be something that's KDF. I realise the Klingons don't have a lot of options, but remember, there are some alliance bases they could build on. For example, they could do Borath for the Klingons, or for alliance bases such as DS9, the Spire, etc. Perhaps it could be possible for additional ZEN to unlock an apartment on an ally's world provided you completed the storyline on that character and have level 4 diplomatic/marauder score. I know the Federation has a lot of options but I think we should restrict them to worlds we can visit with social zones. Borath can be accessed from the Klingon Homeworld?
This would give RPers more variety to play with. They would just pee their pants with glee if this was released. Make the main options a little pricey, but make the decor options cheap for micro-transitions.
Thoughts?

Aside from the proposed cost being too high (I mean c'mon, 5k Zen for the best one?) it just makes little sense. If something like this is going to be done, I would much rather see it be an option for the Captains ship. That would make more sense, in my opinion, then my Captain getting an Apartment on Vulcan.

Interior Ship Customization... Yes.
What I find amazing is that SWG managed to do Both a decade ago with a MMO Engine that supposedly had half of the capabilities of STO's...
What's wrong with these guys?
(that's a rhetorical question, I know that PWE doesn't want to spend the time or money on it)

I'll have to agree with everyone's favorite Forum Minion on this. We technically have player homes if we consider starship interiors that include a Captain's Quarters. The only problem is we can't really customize them. For Fed and KDF we have limited customization with acquiered trophies, but only in the ready room and crew lounge.

Not really thinking this would happen though.
Folks have been getting married in MMO's since the dawn of WoW and SWG.
That's not even close to being a new thing.
I even attended an online marriage in SWG and several in the Red Light Adult MMO.

No... the OP just described every MMO housing expansion ever...
The problem with a house on a custom world will be that you basically want a mini ESD, free of other people, while the zones designed to be just that are subpar as we speak. Get the interiors up to date, and then we'll talk.

"See my Fleet Starbase? My Fleet Spire? All just for me."
If they want to expand that out, why the heck not steal from the Fleet design. Have a personal holdings window, and as the personal holding on, say Qonos improves, you can have a farm that grows 'items' that are already in the game, or go on 'Targ Hunt missions that unlock as your holding expands. Build your Klingon House of (your name here) You can research Epohs, so why not other animals? Guard pets, a pack of Jackel Mastiffs, mules (increased inventory) maybe a robot garage.
The decor could all be limited time projects, and you could have the 'Grind for it' version, and the C-Store version of many accessories..
It ain't an awful idea
I need a place on Risa though ...

Unfortunately, SWG managed to to a lot of things a decade ago, that current MMOs seem to be unable to do. i.e. its crafting system was years ahead of anything we see nowadays.
The foundry have many options to create buildings and interior.
And soon your fleet admiral dosen't even need to leave apartment on some nameless planet because she can send her fleet out to commit genocide for her.
Jokes aside, some kind of housing would be neat. Be it on a planet or some advanced ship interior customization.
As much as I hate to praise EA's devil's work but the housing in swtor is actually pretty decent. Something along those lines could work for STO.
But as others said the chance of it actually happening is pretty much nonexistent.
the point is, there are people that would go for this. They can make money off this and as this develops, they can find ways to better our quarters on our ships. However as said earlier, it is easier to add a new system then to revise an old existing system.
And the Orion slave girl is not naked, she's just standing there and is something only KDFers can have
The point of housing in an MMO--and I've only been doing MMOs since 1999, so I could be missing something--is storage. (Even trophies need to be stored.) It isn't a place our characters go to sleep, eat, or have down-time. (All those aspects detract from leveling up, and our characters never sleep anyway.) Being able to make the storage space more elaborate than absolutely necessary is interesting, but I don't think it's vital.
Housing was never a vital part of the Star Trek canon. Jim Kirk seems to have had an apartment in San Francisco, seen in ST:TWoK. Beyond that, the only housing I remember seeing was on Voyager, and I'm not entirely sure that wasn't in an alternative future.
My captains have quarters, but they contain nothing of interest. At least the ready room has some functionality.
The next thing you know, someone will be asking to fly between missions and star systems while occupying the bridge of the ship.
Actually, yes, that would be great. Cryptic needs money to keep the game running, and revenue sources need to be found - and one like this which would be a pure vanity thing would not add to the powercreep nor give whales an advantage.
Whether something like housing would be viable for STO, i. e. the earnings cover the costs, is a different question altogether, and possibly that wouldn't be the case. Whether the suggested pricing scheme is good would be another (personally I think if at all possible stuff like this would work best with microtransactions which deserve the name but also do only minimal map changes. Want a Kadis-kot board on your coffee table? 50 zen. A set of flowers on the sill? 75 zen. (Exact price always up for debate). If it is only the activation of a single thing, people would get loads of customization options while not paying too much apiece.
I'd prefer this as well. Rather be able to customize the interior of my ship then have a house on some planet.
This. They should sell modular interiors for our ships. They should have separate options for bridges, engineering, science/medical, and habitat levels.
Habitat would have your "ten forward" type room with a bar and lounge. It would also have your personal quarters.
Also for lockbox ships either they would have to come up with 3 new themed levels for each ship or they would have to allow faction interiors for alien ships. I wouldn't care either way.
