A question for the old farts of STO... Remember when Cryptic stated that the C-store was only ever going to have cosmetic items only? And Fed would NEVER get cloaks? Bonus question: First C-store ship to get an extra console?
Do you remember when... 117 votes

F2P = microtransactions. Without them "there are NO lights!"
But honestly, can't hold it past them given the change in ownership.
I still sometimes regret I didn't buy the account wide unlock for the Imperial class back then.
But I had fuully intended to buy on day one, had even entered the "Name the Ship Class" contest they had, just before launch, unfortunately I read a really disparaging review (I know, never trust reviews-use your own judgment).
But it swayed me not to buy it on launch.
And at the time, Diablo 3 was right around the corner.. and I was a longtime Diablo 2 player. So I waited for that instead, got collectors edition pre order and everything...but sadly it was the biggest letdown I've had in my video game career. Goddamn you Blizzard. *shakes a fist*
Anyway I guess I missed the early days of STO, but from what I hear I didn't miss much.
I will take a stab in the dark and guess that the Odyssey was the first ship with 10 consoles? I can't remember. The oddy has 9. I fail.
So, I just put the game in the drawer, and it remained there until STO finally went free-to-play. I installed it the next day. And I still no have plans to ever use real money in STO, or any video game.
(I hate English....)

Of course, I remember that their initial plan for the Tier 5 Retrofits of the Defiant, Galaxy and Intrepid had Dual Lt.Cmdr layouts. People said it would be overpowered and Cryptic altered their plans. It took them introducing a new ship tier to get to that.
Particularly the times under Atari and with dstahl there were a lot of "promises" made (or statements made that people thouht were promises) that were not kept. That said - dstahl's old dream of Sector Space without borders finally came true (or at least so close that it doesn't matter.)
I wonder sometimes if people hate the current leadership and Geko so much because they stopped making claims about things they don't know if or when they'll make them. It closes communication and there is no longer anyone trying to fire players imaginations about what the game could be - but on the other hand, there are a lot less disappointments.
Rhode Island. What did I win?
If we count all tiers then I'd guess the connie since she was there at launch with the CE.
But then again, I also remember seeing Classic Trek when it first aired, so I'm really an Old TRIBBLE.

That really wound me up at the time. I bought it, registered, etc. played through beta and the grace period.
At that point I discovered the rather infuriating truth behind what it said on the back of the box that a "subscription required" was literally that. It was impossible to play the game otherwise, even though the retail version came with a "60 days free trial" you still needed to purchase at least a month's subscription to use it. So it wasn't free at all, you just got a 67% discount on your first three months.
I get mmos can change and nothing is certain especially if personel change but like governments they can pretty much do as they please once they get in except cryptic doesn't answer to us who play the game.
Joined when it became F2P, shortly before the Jem Hadar storyline. Back then the Defiant and Big X were already part of the inventory.

Yeah, I think a few devs and especially the original CM had ideas about trying to commit to NEVER doing things. But the reliability of that intent is pretty much proportional to their status.
Anything worth saying you'll never do is probably worth doing in some form. Or you'd never have to bother saying you'd never do it.
I was brought up to believe if you're not interested in doing something, whether for moral or pragmatic reasons, saying "never" dramatically increases the odds you'll do it. It becomes an obsession. If you don't want to do something, the only sure fire way to commit to that is to avoid thinking you'll never do it and let your attitude towards doing that thing be pure apathy... Or to develop some kind of contractual failsafe against doing it.
Human beings are narrative creatures. And stories are centered entirely around violating interdictions, charging past warnings, doing something against type. "Do not trespass" signs are begging to be crossed. Guns on tables get fired. Big red buttons will get pressed.
But, hey, I'm pretty sure it was equally implied that they'd never do gear loadouts, never allow gear upgrades, never nerf STFs, never go F2P, never hire Trek actors.
Most of these things were also never stated as true nevers either but almost always as "I don't see us ever..." or "We have no plans to ever..." But, again, really not wanting to do something increases how good an option doing that thing can become.
Never must have a different definition to cryptic...even after change of ownership...they said we wouldn't be getting T6 ships but that wasn't true.
In the CO forums, the devs used to do a thing about once a month where they'd release notes about what was coming, what was planned, and what they would like to do if things work out. They even noted the confidence level of each one. They stopped doing that when the flames over their "broken promises" got too heavy. (The last straw appears to have been an idea to have a time-travel mission, sending superheroes to Victorian London to fight werewolves, vampires, and possibly Jack the Ripper. That fell through because it proved to be more difficult and expensive than had been hoped, and because all the devs got pulled from other Cryptic projects for Legacy of Romulus and then for Neverwinter. A lot of the assets were reused for a new lower-level arc in Vibora Bay, but the screams of betrayal from those who thought they were "owed" this Victorian thing were long and loud.)
Guys, read all the words the devs type. Don't skim it, assume they're saying what you want to hear, and then flame them when your assumptions prove to be unfounded.
"With the first link, the chain is forged. The first speech censured, the first thought forbidden, the first freedom denied, chains us all irrevocably."
Most unexpectedly, this turned into a flame-fest! Closed it goes!. /sigh What flamefestery is this? pwlaughingtrendy

Those special faction EV suits used to be C store. I have one to prove it. (is not lifetime)
"He shall be my finest warrior, this generic man who was forced upon me.
Like a badass I shall make him look, and in the furnace of war I shall forge him.
he shall be of iron will and steely sinew.
In great armour I shall clad him and with the mightiest weapons he shall be armed.
He will be untouched by plague or disease; no sickness shall blight him.
He shall have such tactics, strategies and machines that no foe will best him in battle.
He is my answer to cryptic logic, he is the Defender of my Romulan Crew.
He is Tovan Khev... and he shall know no fear."
Lockboxes with a random chance to get I-win button abilities on the other hand can pike right off. That's beyond pay2win. It's gamble2win.
