I'm currently on a time travel mission back to the 1960s. They need to fix this quickly as I am having a really hard time in this time without microwave ovens and diet dr pepper.

Same here:Unable to update the launcher Please be patient Tried connecting 23 times and another error came up:unable to establish connection to patch server
I just decided to come back after a year and I was having so much fun xD is this a common occurrence? =\
It's been common for the last couple of weeks but was not common before that.

How about paraphrasing for us who can't view that Twitter Feed? :P
Either way today's attack is really severe if it knocked out the patcher and log-in service. And PWE's response has been rather unreassuring.
Actually, as of this post, NOTHING has been posted on STO's twitter regarding this current issue. So whoever linked that is helping absolutely no one right now.

Yeah, this isn't a DDoS. Something has happened at the DNS level that appears to have deleted the DNS server records for "crypticstudios.com". This is Bad.
This is not a DDoS attack. Something has gone sideways with the crypticstudios.com domain.
Right now, there are no reported DNS servers for "patchserver.crypticstudios.com"
Again, this isn't necessarily a DDoS attack so until we know more let's not jump to conclusions. Yes, it's frustrating not being able to play especially on the weekends, but keep in mind that weekends are when more traffic comes in on these servers so with the extra strain that's also most likely the times that a server will go down.
The person that was attacking last weekend has not said anything and Cryptic/STO would not make routine maintenance adjustments during peak hours (with the exception of last night apparently which I'm hoping was some kind of safeguard/update to the servers to help mitigate DDoS attacks).
All we can say for certain right now is that the system is down.

Well if that is the case the servers should be back already because it was suppose to be a 5 minutes thing. But have been more than 30 minutes and no devs have posted anything.

Most unexpectedly, this turned into a flame-fest! Closed it goes!. /sigh What flamefestery is this? pwlaughingtrendy
someone in my fleet said that they are doing network maintenance and that is why the servers are offline. Apparently they didn't do the network upgrade last night as was posted in the launcher. He told me the twitter post says 6:30PDT so that is about right since this started at 9:30 EDT. No attack this time
it also says "for 5 minutes" and that was yesterday.

Seriously? So it was meant to happen tonight but they forgot to mention that one detail? And on a Saturday night, interesting if true.

Not saying you are wrong at all, but what is your source for that? How do you know something has deleted the records you mentioned? I'm simply curious.

Well given that we've been under DDoS attack for a week now, I wouldn't rule out a connection of somekind.

given the nature of a DDoS attack, wouldn't that be the response you get? As it's being flooded with so many requests yours cant even get through?

Except that Google's Open DNS servers are reporting that there are no records at all for ns1.crypticstudios.com nor ns2.crypticstudios.com. So there are no name servers at all for the domain. This isn't a DDoS.
I won't speculate as to what it is, but its definitely not a DDoS.

I think you're right about that.
They had a "quick" server adjustment at 6:30 PM PDT.
Unfortunately that was yesterday.
Right now there's a bunch of new threads reporting the current outage.
One of them posted this thingy to keep track of the status:
http://stostatus.com/
Now its 500 seconds, don't really want to force it down with the issue's going on but its looking like I might have to

So our pain might have been a massive mistake or cleverly intentional...
