I did wonder, given that the dialogue box said "static" at the end, as if to suggest the transmission got cut off. I suspect I would be the only one to be sad if he died though.

No, you wouldn't. I like Kurland.
I'm not sure, but I think I've seen the Defiant flying around. But in the chaos of the battle I wasn't paying that much attention to the others
It was a cute in-joke for all those who complained about him... but I don't like the idea that the Defiant was sacrified for the joke potentially. As much as I want to see a T6 Defiant, ... not like this... but lol Kurland NO LONGER HERE
Sorry but I'm kinda new to this, what are all these jokes about Kurland for? I actually like him
It's from the 4400 episode arc, specifically "Boldly They Rode" - during the infiltration of DS9 when you're in the environmental suits, Kurland recommends radio silence, and then pops up with advice and mission objectives seemingly every thirty seconds with "Kurland here!" Or "This is Kurland!" as the voiceover.
The combination of being chatted at all the time and the way "Kurland here" was delivered has made it a bit of a meme.

As the Defiant was a named ship, she had Plot Armor mk 99. I remember her flying around shooting so she wasn't sacrificed. My guess is her comm systems were damaged, hence the static.
I personally found it hilarious when Kurland popped onscreen. It happened at the conclusion of a firefight, but if I had been in intense battle I'd have been blown to smithereens while I laughed.
Captain Jean-Luc Picard: "We think we've come so far. Torture of heretics, burning of witches, it's all ancient history. Then - before you can blink an eye - suddenly it threatens to start all over again."
"With the first link, the chain is forged. The first speech censured, the first thought forbidden, the first freedom denied, chains us all irrevocably."
I had to pause the mission I was laughing so much at that meta joke. I think there was another meta joke on Iconia itself, but I forget what that was. But the Defiant didn't die. She was ganged up on, but she was holding her own and was still flying/shooting after the next objective appeared. At least for me.

I did laugh, and it was as a battle ended and I immediately thought of Trendy. Then wondered "Um, did they just leave Bajor undefended???"
You don't need a Defiant class ship to defend Bajor...this is war, all available units to protect Earth as one final stand against a supposedly overwhelming enemy. They probably left behind a runabout to guard it and were fine
