I claimed my specialization points knowing I cannot use them until after the fix, however after claiming I only have 1 point. Which I already had, because I had got one earlier from XP.
Edit: Never mind, I am a silly and didn't realize it was giving me an item. Sorry!

Gotta love it, every sign today has shown me a "New Dawn" and it is bright. Staff on top of bugs, the new content, and listening to the players! Way to go Cryptic!
My friend, all I saw was one big RESET button at the end. And not the good kind of reset either. Oh, STO is SO like Voyager. "Year of hell" was meant as a full season, but it never became one, just like "New Dawn" will not have that planet we've visited in the "Butterfly effect". Alas.

Sorry to disagree but for me, fixing one bug which they released today, does not negate the bugs which have existed for years which they continue to ignore. *Looks at Defera*
Join date is wrong, I've actually been around since STO Beta.
True alters don't have a "main". Account wide unlocks for all unique event rewards!!
Is it part of the bug that the free spec points say you have to be level 60 to use them even though the toon does not have the skill bug showing?
The toon I am using is level 54 and already has some specializations slotted but the toon has not done the Delta reputation (I have done it on two others) so doesn't have the stated trait available or unlocked.

I don't think that's part of the bug. Even in the Z-store it says you need to be level 60 to use it. I suspect that between 51 and 60 your spec points are directly tied to your level so you can't get bonus spec points since that would cause you to gain a level as well.
It looks like it's related to reputations, but we are getting a fix checked in.
I don't believe you. This is clearly just the first of the many unintended consequences of that blasted timeship! Skill point paradox where in this new timeline you didn't train those skills, but you are temporally shielded so you remember training those skills.
ORLY!? post above yours borticus just thoroughly explained it was rep related.
Skill point paradox due to time manipulation in the game having an effect on the code of the game seemed serious to you somehow?
This is an MMO, not a Star Trek episode simulator. That would make for a terrible game.

What bugs are those?
You mean besides the focused singularity beam, various missions, intensifying rubber-banding issues, costume unlocks failing or being otherwise incomplete, etc.
Alright. It looks like we'll be getting an emergency maintenance (likely tomorrow morning) to resolve this after the fix is done through testing. I'll keep you posted.
Maybe just claim the reward and don't open it until after the patch?
That's what i'm doing... although, it sounds like there's no need for a rollback, and the bug has to do with Rep traits. Skill points, spec points, and the like should not be affected.

Ok, thanks.
I just don't want to log in and have all my skills blanked or something like that. I would normally wait, but the skill points are only available until morning. Guess I'll risk it.

You, Bort, and others are doing an amazing job keeping us informed and on top of irritating (but not debilitating) bugs like this. Considering where we were 1 year ago the entire communication channel has had +100% improvement and I for one welcome our new communication overlords.
Thanks for getting all over this like flies on a hot pile of ..... tribble corpses, it is appreciated and noticed by more people than only those posting here. Reddit posts are great as I see those far more frequently then digging in the forums for a current topic.
As a software developer myself (one man band though), I can sympathize with how some bugs can be quite elusive and at times in a completely different class then where the issue propagates. Some are easy to squash and others take lots of profiling and tracing to track down. I think it's great to see ownership taken of issues and that attention is given and not turned away, even if it takes a while to fix certain things.
We are checking in a fix right now. As soon as it's validated, we're going to look at pushing it to Holodeck. This will likely require Emergency Downtime.
Here's an explanation of the issue:
When the system flags you as "Skills Invalid" it prevents adding/removing any powers to/from your Captain. This includes Skills, Traits, and Specs. It's all related to the one issue that's invalidating your skills. In the case of this particular bug, it's directly related to the Delta T4 Reputation Trait, "Enhanced Rending Shots."
The change we checked in that improved this power's performance on the server, required a small re-structure to the PowerTree related to the Delta Reputation, where when you earned T4 you are actually being given 3 powers instead of 2. One (the new one we had to add) is automatic, and doesn't require Slotting, but also does not activate on your character unless Enhanced Rending Shots is slotted. However, it the PowerTree itself was still flagged to only purchase 2 nodes within that Tier, and so when given 3 options it didn't know what to do with itself and continuously failed to meet Skill Validation.
We fixed that. Enhanced Rending Shots still has its performance improved, and the Reputation System no longer seizes up when more than 2 nodes exist within a PowerTree Tier.
Stay tuned for more information from the team on how and when this fix will be rolled out to Holodeck
And, when was this changed made, because if it was before this recent update, than it seems awfully funny it didn't effect anyone before!
If it was roled out this current update, than I can see where this would make sense!
EDIT: Ok, I found the relase notes finally!
The changes to this skill, were made today, which makes more sense!
Hey everyone. Borticus posted this at 10:45 AM. Then at 11:07 AM he posted it to Reddit. After posting here.
The team is going back and forth trying to post information to as many locations as possible, as well as work on the fix itself. Stop posting inflammatory comments about how the devs don't care for their own forums when we're trying to communicate on tons of fronts. Seriously. Knock it off. End of discussion.

Is it 'safe' to play tonight? I mean, this doesn't hurt anything right?
All completely safe. While you won't be able to spend things you earn until the fix goes in, everything you earn/unlock will become available to you once the fix is applied.

Thanks for the assurances, Borticus! Would this be the cause of newly acquired ship traits not appearing the in the ship trait list for selection, then? Or is that a different can of bugs altogether?
Here... I've consolidated some FAQ on this subject:
FAQ:
Q: Is this related to the Free Spec Point Promo?
A: No. Claiming the promo Spec Points will not harm your character in any way. Please claim them while you can - they are only available for a limited time!
Q: I earned "X" while this bug is/was present. Will I lose that when it's fixed?
A: No, everything earned/unlocked while this bug is present will still be there after we repair the issue.
Q: I earned/unlocked a new Trait, but can't slot it. Is this related?
A: Yes, this is another symptom of the same "Skills Invalid" issue. While in this state, new abilities cannot be added or removed from your character. This primarily affects Skills, Specs and Traits.
Q: What IS the cause of the issue? Can we avoid it?
A: The root cause is reaching T4 in the Delta Reputation. If you have not yet reached that point, you can avoid suffering this bug by not progressing your Delta Reputation, if you so choose.
Q: Is there a workaround?
A: Unfortunately, no. You'll be fixed as soon as the patch goes to Holodeck, but until then there's nothing that can be done to remove the error once it's already afflicting your character.
Q: Does this mean everyone will get a free Respec when it's fixed?
A: No, probably not. Your skills will simply change from being Invalid, to Valid.

Just curious. I have all 4 spec trees maxed out and thus do not earn more spec points. If I were to use the promo, what would happen?
Nothing. These points do not roll over into Dilithium.
Not that I can test it (no characters with filled-out spec trees), but I'd assume you can still claim the 'container' (just as if you are a pre-60 character), you just shouldn't open it until a new specialization is released/Commando is expanded like Pilot was.

Yup, that's my thought, too. It's sitting in the bank for now.
I just tested this. You actually get to keep the Spec Points, even though they technically exceed your max. So no need to keep them cluttering up your inventory - go ahead and open the package.
Not adding this to the FAQ, since it's specific to the Spec Point Promo, and not the Skills Invalid bug.
