Here's a good Community question for this week.....

Do you consider ships "content" ?

    and

For 30 to 190 dollars, would you buy a STO package of content(Missions, story, rewards)?

No. Cryptic has stated many times in the past that they will never charge for content (such as new story episodes, adventure and battle zone maps, PvE queued events, etc.). It doesn't matter how much money you offer. It's not gonna happen.

Honestly I'm starting to get sick of seeing this "I'll pay you money if you give us more content faster" kinda posts. It isn't going to get them to release new stuff any faster than they already are.

Compared to some other MMOs, Cryptic puts out a fair amount of content regularly. It's not their fault you blow through it too fast.

    Here we go again...
I don't intend to deliver another essay, but let's see what happens. And I will be talking about the season 11 announcement and the STLV dev panel, so you better get that out of your systems during the show. ;)

    - Tales of the war #16:
I can't stand A'dranna anymore (since Sphere of Influence to be honest). And I really don't like the fact that these machinations are not explored ingame. This is turning into year of hell reloaded, starring A'dranna as Annorax, the planets Romulus and Remus as Annorax's wife and the Iconians as the brave crew of the U.S.S. Voyager, and we don't get involved with the moral implications at all.
This is not just about trying to end the war, this has become about playing god and we don't get to experience any of that. We are *tribble purr* admirals for *tribble purr*'s sake. We are at the highest echelons of power and don't get involved in any of this *tribble purr*? *tribble purr* that!

Sure, A'dranna, your planet got blown up and billions of people (romulans and remans) died in that catastrophe and you want to restore all was lost. I get it. But does your squirrel-sized brain realize that that would also bring back the full might of the romulan empire and the Tal Shiar and end the republic? So you would need to not just bring Romulus back, but then find another target to change the empire into a republic. Where do you draw the line?
How did this woman ever rise through the ranks to become one of the top scientists of the republic?
Oh... yeah... because all the real scientists got blown up with Romulus... -.-

And why does she even have a say in this? Shouldn't Admiral Quinn, Chancellor J'mpok and (what's his title? Proconsul?) D'Tan be the ones to negotiate what to change/set the goal to preserve most of the timeline? Maybe even have their respective top temporal agents join the negotiations as advisors? (Btw., so many guys leading the respective factions... Maybe Quinn should die and have a female admiral succeed him.)
Shouldn't this Saan guy inform his superiors that A'dranna is following her own agenda instead of trying to "just" end this war?

Can we please sacrifice A'dranna at this point and give Adrianne Grady some other (better) character to voice?
Mmh... that won't work, right? Let me try again...
I mean, it would be a terrible loss and a true testament to the brutality of this horrifying war if we lost such an intelligent and talented scientist. *fakes a sob*
    Does that work better?

    - Season 11:
When I read the announcement and I read about mirror Leeta, my first reaction was: "Do I really want a mirror universe expansion?". Then I started thinking about it and while I still would have preferred the ferengi story arc that has been hinted at (if they could get the actors), as long as it is just a season and not actually the prelude to a mirror universe expansion... I think I will live. ;)
Now, using the DS9 actors to lead us into this mirror universe season kinda sorta somewhat makes sense, because the mirror universe gets featured prominently in the Cardassian (/DS9) story arc, but I think they should have just split that.
Give us a Cardassian story arc exploring their struggle and maybe just maybe intertwined with a DS9 story arc and then give us a separate mirror universe story arc. Or have a DS9 arc as the bridge between the other arcs. But as it is right now, we have the DS9 story arc and within that overarching story arc we got the "Cardassian struggle", the "Mirror universe incursion" AND the "The 2800" (formerly) featured episode series.

Back to topic... imagine how awesome it could be if one of mirror Leeta's top enforcers/captains was... mirror Wesley! Yes, I know, Wil Wheaton won't touch Wesley with a ten-foot-pole, but maybe mirror Wesley would be different/fun enough to convince him? I mean we've never seen mirror Wesley, so they could go nuts with that character.

    - Since we're talking about celebrities already, have you noticed Manu Intiraymi wanting to get into STO? There have been a couple of tweets in... (looks it up) mid july. What's your take on it? He seemed to be quite eager to jump in. There's even a petition on change.org (by some "STO facebook fanclub" or something called... 602 club(?)) to get Icheb into the game. He even tweeted about that petition on his Twitter account and it looks like he signed the petition himself.
I think for now the window of opportunity has closed (unless they go for mirror Icheb...), but for "Delta Rising part 2" or if the borg ever did return as an actual threat, I could see Icheb joining the action, especially since the character already exists ingame (just like Naomi Wildman, how about we get those two in at the same time?).

    - Admiralty system:
Sounds fine. I guess that means the "turn a BOff into a playable Captain" and "away team in space" ideas that have been tossed around ages ago have just died and this is the next best thing.
    I'm cautiously optimistic.

    - STLV panel:
Okay, let's start with the good...
We got the season 11 announcement before the panel. That's an improvement over last year where they announced Delta Rising (and T6 and "your old ships won't be obsoleted") and then there was just no followup over the weekend and the forums went insane (even more than usual). I still applaud JHeinig and CrypticQuack for trying to fight the forum fires back then. Cryptic obviously understood the situation whereas Perfect World just messed up, but back to topic...
It was a high caliber panel. The Executive Producer; the Lead Designer; the Lead Artist; not one, but two celebrities with a guest appearance by a third celebrity and all of that goodness moderated by someone from CBS. What could possibly go wrong?

Now let's dive into the bad... Like I said before, with a panel like that, how can you not announce the next expansion? It's packed to the brim with important people and then the information released is just meh. I was hyped, then the season 11 announcement came out even before the dev panel with all this mirror universe stuff and I just felt like the panel would not go anywhere and well, it delivered on that...
I mean, there was not even anything about any kind of crosspromotion from CBS. Not a single *tribble purr*-ing teaser about the big anniversary next year. So why did they even get Holly Amos to moderate the panel? Did she volunteer/ask to do that? What was the point?
This panel was "bigger" than last year's panel and then... *poof* nothing of value. That'll teach me.

    - Changing storylines:
Well, people threw a fit when they played "Divide et impera" (I think that was the infamous mission) with the preemptive strike against that romulan station where "supposedly" weapons of mass destruction had been hidden. And at the end the Deltan admiral (Does the name Admiral Zelle ring a bell? ;) ), who ordered us to commit all these criminal acts without us ever having the opportunity to really speak up against her (I seem to remember some sort of "alibi questions", but no actual resistance), turned out to be an Undine.
And the romulan republic did not exist yet. So when they introduced the republic it made sense to redo the romulan arc to include their struggle against the empire/Tal shiar and to throw out some of these missions that were just completely out of character for the federation.
You have to see it (a little) like the WoW expansion Cataclysm. Where Blizzard took the whole level 1-60 experience and tried to straighten up the timeline and improve the questflow for new players. That's what Cryptic is doing here (and has been doing for a while) but step by step instead of all at once.

    - Btw. since you did not understand what someone was talking about in last weeks feedback: DA:I is not DA : l (small L), but DA : I (big i) and it's the abbreviation for Dragon Age: Inquisition. The latest installment in BioWare's Dragon Age series.

    - Looking for hosts:
Okay, I gotta say, thanks for the vote of confidence, but I never actually considered to apply for that position (or one of those positions since you never mentioned how many new co-hosts you're looking for). I guess now I will have to start thinking about it...
So let me just throw a few questions your way:

You only really mentioned "a quiet room and a good mic", but what else are you looking for in a new co-host?
Maybe you could have a little "guide" or some hints or a link on how to find a "good mic" (since not every listener will know the difference between a good (and reasonably priced) and a bad mic) on your website and put that into your shownotes? (Yes, google exists, but again, not every listener will know how to use that effectively...)
I guess showing up for the live show is kind of a given. ;)
How do you prepare for a show?
What program do you use (is it a Skype call or something else entirely)?
How does MidNite deal with having an indepth discussion about Star Trek/Star Trek Online from midnight to about 2 am on saturday morning?
(Cause for me it would be 1 am to 3 am on saturday morning and I'm not sure how well I would be able to rant back at sunseahl's rants... :p I guess I will have to catch a couple of your liveshows to see how that works out, before I would even consider applying.)

In the Olden Times ... -- aka 2011 , aka The Year of Hell ... (and not the bloody lockbox) , Gozer the Gozarian deemed ships to be content .
And there was much 'rejoicing' ... ooppa forums style !

And as much as I would disagree with my fave Dev back then on the topic (as I do now) -- the unfortunate truth is this : we may not see ships as content, but Cryptic do (per the "if we created it and put it in the game, than it's content by default, even if you can't / won't purchase it or play with it") .
for 30 to 190 dollars, would you buy a STO package of content(Missions, story, rewards)?

Yes, but not for the prices mentioned above . $20-$25 would be justifiable.
Bugs & lag aside STO is still an "emperor's new cloak" experience , and has been for a long time ... -- meaning that there is an awful lot of mediocrity at best under some pretty art .

Get me game designers of Gozer's caliber who can deliver raids the likes of your best played content (the original STF's) and the price may be negotiable .

Okay, we just got an announcement for the new featured episode.
That introductory blog deals exactly with the moral problems we should have dealt with a long time ago. Okay, who's responsible for this episode? Mmh... Kate Bankson. Okay, this might get good. Please let this be good. I will definitely play this new episode on thursday (unless the servers crash and burn...). The desire to get hyped is rising... rising... rising...

Oh. And I did not notice the community questions when I wrote that essay. -.-

Are ships content? Yes and no.
From a consumer's perspective they are not. Content to us is usually episodes, PvE and PvP queues, STFs, fleet actions, battlezones, events, new reputations... Basically everything that keeps us busy.
But from a developer's perspective, I can see how they could be considered "content", because there are artists and designers working on them (just like on content) and they obviously want to get paid for that work (just like content designers/artists) and in the grand scheme of things their work needs to "pay for itself". It needs to bring in money or help improve player retention so those players are more likely to actually spend money.

    Would I pay for content?
Uhm... Depends? Could I pay with dilithium/Zen? In that case I could just save up and use my stipend.
And how often would I have to buy this content and how much content and how much would that cost? (30 - 190$ is not exactly precise...) So many questions! Ugh! ;)
  • sunseahlsunseahl Member Posts: 827 Arc User
Wow! it's not even Tuesday and i'm loving the feedback already!

@monkeybone13 The "somewhat regular" content is actually a rather recent change, within the last 12 months of a 5-year game. It's funny you say you're getting sick of these posts and yet more and more people are saying they play less not because they "blow through content" (not all anyway) but simply because what is there feels sub-par. I really would rather pay money for a good story than for a shiny new ship everyone "has to have." Would this stop me from bying ships from time to time? Absolutley not. If Cryptic released the Orion Slavemaster Battleship and Warbarge I'd drop cash right now on one. but that would be icing on my cake... because I would have already payed for a good story or several good stories.

    @alex1ger
    Co-host:

-Those are really the only basic requirements for us at this point. I'd add that you'd might want to be engaging, like here, so that our fans don't always "only" hear me. Be bold, and eager to participate in the conversation going on, even if you have to wait for others to finish. Lastly, never be afraid to interrupt or you might not be heard at all.

-As for a mic.... I've been using cheapo headsets from Wal*mart forever, if that wasn't apparent by the audio quality, and even those are considered a "decent mic." so just something that isn't going to make you sound like a Gorn dry heaving hairballs... unless you are a Gorn who likes licking Ferasans... in which case we do kinda need more KDF folks around.... DE7lsR2.png

-Oh defiantly try to make it to a live show! I'd love seeing your feedback, as exhausted as you may be, What you listen to in the show is almost the same, minus technical glitches, as what you'll hear from a live broadcast!

-We don't use Skype except in rare, dire, circumstances. Instead we usually route a recording bot through Teamspeak that helps us broadcast(this is how a LOT of podcasters, online radio stations, and streamers operate)

How do we prep? Well aside from having show notes that we manipulate throughout the week we usually just show up... read through the notes, catch up on what we've missed and just kinda go from there. Our show may seem more planned than it really is! onion-4.gif

    Adranna:

Sadly I do have to agree here... Adranna has has so much sheer "bad luck" befall her that if she were KDF Cryptic would have executed her for incompetence to give us another Transporter-err... Scientist.... From Cooper fiddling with her gateway math to getting lost in a Vauudwar maze... Wait that was Adr'reaan the Kobali Engineer *shrugs*

Feedback: Most of the rest of your feedback i'd really love to leave for discussion friday so i'll not really expound on that further. (it'll give us something to discuss on twitch) ^-^

    Community Questions:

I understand that's how the devs see the ships, mostly because they took the time and effort to make them. and i also understand that even if it is investment... it's not adding any real substance to the game other than, as you said last week, adding a buyable "mount."

As for paying for story i was throwing out a ball-park estimate based on the prices of ships, ship packs, and expansion collections(Legacy/Delta pack)

Any potential hosts for this podcast will find several suggestions helpful. The following things have been utilized by the current hosts, and they have led to the podcast being what it is today!

    1. Make sure to pompously blither on for long periods of time. Dominate the conversation with your opinions as much as humanly possible;
    2. Having melodramatic temper tantrums on the air regularly is very important!

    and lastly

    3. Make it known that you feel that LGBT people are unnatural and moral deviants, and that you are okay with them being considered second-class citizens. Immediately follow this up with a hypocritical claim that you "don't judge" TRIBBLE people.

Well, you choose to feed a fire, or put the silly thing out before it causes more damage Remind me to never hire you for a Fire Dept position.

Stop acting like anyone doing the pod casts is getting paid for it. If you don't like what they have to say in their pod cast go make your own. Create some competing content. Anyone can do this. A few, a very few can do it well, and the net, and you tube are filled with failed pod casts and video blogs.

As for the whole LBGT thing... I live in the San Francisco bay area, and its a non issue here. We all pretty much decided together that once a year we'll do pride week, and the rest of the year we have other stuff to do. Its evolved into a celebration of diversity, and its not just about LBGT (and be aware the B and the T are fairly recent editions..and the L and the G have barely tolerate each other at times) It's just become another political issue. Everyone forgets in their passionate defence of their turf that these are all PEOPLE.. and that includes the strait folks caught in the cross fire who don't bear anyone any ill will, or walk around packing intolerance in their back pockets.

I'm tired of hearing about it. I don't really care who any ones goes to bed with, or has sex with, as long as that person isn't an under age child, and the act is consensual.

Grow up people. Don't let your Karma run over your Dogma... It's painful, and usually embarrassing, and inevitably public.

All sarcasm aside, despite how cynical I often feel I am, I continue to be shocked with the incredible lack of empathy that many people have. I suppose I shouldn't be shocked, but it is quite discouraging. Before I stopped listening to Tribbles in Ecstasy, Sunseahl, I thought that you were just awkward or something along those lines. But no, I really think you are just very self-absorbed. Wow.

    I'm done.

    Good luck with your podcast.

@starwolf314 If that's how you feel, farewell.

I've never claimed to be appealing to everyone nor will I change what I believe to accommodate people who think I should be something else. I'm here simply to give my own opinion on Star Trek Online, if that upsets some then that's not really my problem. If it makes them stop listening that's even less my problem.

A person, anyone should not talk down to/about someone else simply because they don't like them, their voice, their opinion, their attitude. There are people who I think are absolutely awesome that I just can't stand to be around for too long. Does that make me stop liking them? Nope. It also doesn't make me take to a forum to say how much I dislike aspects of who they are.

We're all here because we like Star Trek, different aspects in different respects, different seasons of different series and all for different reasons. We never have to say we all like each other nor do we actually have to. What is constant is that we should be more tolerant of each other, even our more eccentric, irrational, and under-educated fellow beings. How else do we ever expect to leave our world and be the Trek future we wish to see...

    Don't feed the trolls.

    Back to topic...

    Tales of the War #17:
Nice, atmospheric piece of storytelling. I have to question the fact that it's supposed to happen on New Romulus and the Lleiset has to investigate. Are there really no qualified (military) forces on New Romulus? At all?
And once again, why do we not get to experience this?

Why not have a mission where we start at some starbase and meet a young captain who basically falls over his (or her) own feet when he/she meets us and, since we're so experienced and awesome, asks us to talk to his/her crew, because morale is at an all-time low and he/she is too inexperienced to inspire the crew anymore?
How about we deliver the speech and (depending on our species and the respective faction) either choose the right words and bolster morale or fail and let it drop even lower?
Throw in a couple of distress calls afterwards where WE get to scan some debris and find no signs of life, but maybe a personal log or two in the remains of the ship's computer?
How about one of the distress calls requires us to beam down to a planet and find that "message in a bottle" from a few blogs ago? And maybe a devastated kitchen with a broken mug (and some spilled raktajino on the floor) or a plush epohh showing us that there was a family living there before?
And at the end have one distress call lead us into space battle where a passenger transport (evacuating civilians) is under attack. The young captain we met at the start of the mission is already there and depending on how well we did with boosting the morale we either see their ship getting blown to pieces or they are so motivated that they barely manage to hang in there and try to help us as best as they can.
We defeat the herald ships and save the civilian ship and if we managed to save the young captain too we get a special mention from our faction contact at the turn-in...

Sure, it's demoralizing to be just a little too late all those times, but we get at least a small victory at the end and it would show (not just tell) us the Iconian war.

Oh and sure, you can say my idea is terrible, but writing this took me a couple of minutes, just connecting some "tales of the war" into a somewhat coherent story. Now imagine what a real storyteller could do instead...

I'm sorry for the essays... (No, I'm not. :p )
