Walking outside the ESD and seeing close up of ships

So I was playing around when I managed to get outside the ESD.

It was damn COOL!!!!, walked around the station a bit, seeing ships fly by. Walked by a few windows and see people going about their business below. I then took a long walk to the other side where the ships are parked, got to the edge and I could see all these ships parked in there. I tried to get to the top to get a better view but unforturnately fell over. As I fell, to the "floor" I sort of went right through it but got REALLY close to the pathfinder.

This got me thinking, why don't the dev make this accessible to everyone? I would love to walk/jet around and see these ships close up.

Going to experiment some more.

    Yea... Just stop OP...

While I feel no sympathy for kittens, what you are doing here is unnecessary...

You got outside... Grats... It's not like it's a huge achievement (since hundreds of people did it before you), but by posting this here in the forums, you are giving Taco unnecessary headaces and demotivating him.

    Just don't.

he's demotivating taco by talking about how cool he found it to be able to see all the stuff taco designed from a totally new angle? ummm hows that work?

Taco is getting increasingly frustrated by people leaving the "intended" areas and finding ways into the Unintended areas that only got superficial attention.

Why do you think we are forced-beamed out of the shuttlebay? It wasn't like that always, and was only added after he found out that people went there.

And every time people post threads like this, he clearly becomes more frustrated... Frustration leads to lack of motivation.

It's really not that hard a concept to grasp.

We don't get let out normally because of glitches like the one you experienced. Falling through floors, seeing the transparent rear of a prop, all these kind of things. To let you out, they would need to expand the map and fix all the visual and "physical" glitches that you know encounter there. That is a lot of work they'd rather spend on other maps, for missions for example.

With infinite resources and time, they might model the whole Star Trek universe. But they have very, very finite resources, and so they must spend them efficiently.

Go to the foundry, create new ESD map, add floater volume, add ship models to map. Have fun without killing poor kittens.

I wouldn't say I'm getting more and more frustrated. It's more like I had a wound inflicted during the ESD creation. I got stitches, but every time one of these threads pop up, it's like someone poking my bandage.

Not demotivated, per se. Just frustrated that there is a glaring bug in our movement/spawning code, which lets people out there, which I have no powers to fix. I've gone into this in detail a few times before, you can go find those if you want more specifics.

luckily there's not really all that much to do once you're out there, so it gets old.....but yeah, make a big hangar bay, throw some ships in there for us to take tour and look at, that'd be cool.

One way to "fix" the problem of people trying to go outside the safe area is to simply make everything outside the boundries of the player zone, instant death. When they die, they respawn back at the beam in point (Transporter Pad in the case of ESD). This also would fix any issues where a player falls through the terrain and is unable to beam out for any reason.

I am certain Tacofangs would love to kill players who go into forbidden areas.

Other than the first 1/2 of boldly they Rhode.

Now an EV Combat Mission, Space Walking and shooting, would be awesome. Also a ground pvp map like the dilithium mining area would be sweet.

I know we had that in Boldly They Rode (and a little bit, though very frustrating and with gravity in Step Between the Stars--NEVER again!!!), but it seems useful assets exist for one for ESD. :D

Sure, and I appreciate that. But from my perspective (and as I've posted before), to me it's akin to someone getting up in the middle of the play to go poking around the set. We build things to be viewed from where the player is intended to be (i.e. the seats in the theatre), it looks like TRIBBLE behind the scenes, and once you're up on stage, it's VERY apparent that that amazing castle is just a big flat facade with 2x4's holding it up in the back.

I appreciate that people are interested in seeing how things work, and wanting to explore more of the map. But I'm equally irked that you're looking at the sloppy behind the scene's 2x4s.

Ah, people will always look behind the scenes and very rarely can anyone cover up all the ways to get to them.
Hell, look at WoW. Getting to Old Ironforge, underneath Stormwind or the Emerald Dream and seeing all the incomplete work was all the rage back in the day... and more fun than that game is now.. but I digress.

There's a ton of stuff *inside* ESD that's just nice to see. I came into STO after new ESD was already thing, so new ESD has always been my ESD. But after playing for just over a year, it's still one of my favourite social maps. Just an incredible piece of the game, and all the little details are great. So there's plenty of love for ESD from the spectators' side of the stage

Heck, I want to see Taco let loose on New Romulus and give it a revamp, now that we're much farther along in the storyline. Really, anywhere where Taco can be given free reign on designing a map, he needs to be given it.

I'm not sure I'm getting what about an accident that happens to beam me in on a different part of the map becomes an act of trolling? I never observed any impact on other players as a result of that accident, so I'm not quite understanding how we got from Point A to Point B. :/

Also, on the rare occasion when something like that has happened to me, I suspect I am not judging your work with anything like the harshness I hear towards your own work. Don't worry, my imagination embellishes on things quite a bit anyway. ;)

Now here's the part where I creep you out. >:)

Speaking of imagination filling in the details, I actually had a dream once where I got to see the Reman underground city on New Romulus not just in an onscreen close-up, but walk around in it "for reals." Trust me, it's gonna be good. :D

It's possible that it 'just happens' to some people, but in general, in order to spawn outside the playable space, you have to log out in some pretty specific places. Right up in the corner of some invisible collision on the roof of a shop, or at the tip top of one of the diagonal struts. Not generally places an average passerby is going to log out.

As for trolling, I stemmed some of that by putting the transporter volume in the Shuttlebay, and extra collision around the Ops window. Both of which were notorious disco party spots before.

Oh...I didn't realize people actually triggered it on purpose. It's only happened to me 2 or 3 times that I've been able to look around any length of time outside of a normal map area, and I've been playing for 3 years.

There's a very similar bug with the Fleet Starbase map. When teamed and beaming into the starbase ground map there's a good chance you will either get beamed into a wall or dropped through the floor to the lower shuttlebay. Here are two screenshots of this: imgur.com/yjmFyJM and imgur.com/nipBFOT. These two screenshots are from May 18, 2013 and I reported the bug as soon as I found it at the time.

Well Im sorry it dances on some of taco's raw nerves :/ The art dept is one of the few things I really like about STO, there are some epic areas where taco and co have shined. The first area that pops to mind is the first time I looked back at the zombie city and up a bit. I mean Ive made like 1000 screenies in STO and even in places that have gfx weirdness Im impressed with the detail. Ships too many times, esp Romulan ones where, I presume, art gets a lot more freedom due to the lack of canon material to have to conform to.
    sBc1c5I.jpg

Took me some work to get to a spot where I could see over the wall, I didn't do it to see or point out any issues. I did it cause I wanted to see over the wall lol :) Its still one hell of a beauty shot imo, and doesn't say anything but good things about the artists that worked it.

Dayum. That is a beauty shot.

New Romulus is such a great map. I'd love to see some updates to it, given the great work that's been done with other locations recently.
