Just started a few days ago, enjoying the game thus far.. Just curious on a few things.. Anyone willing to walk me through the game...
Here's a short walkthrough for new players:
Enjoy the game while you can. All content you will play is easy and can be done alone with minimal effort and skill. Once you've reached lvl 60 the game is over - there is no endgame content in Star Trek Online at all. All you can do at this point is participating in the DPS League (speedruns & dps records) or doing PvP (which is dead due to massive balance issues and power creep since the end of last year).
If you decide to join the dps race: You don't want to play a Sci or Eng captain. These 2 careers are the most useless and underperforming classes you can imagine. Their only valid purpose was PvP which is dead. So what you are going to do is playing a Tac, go all beams, spamming AoE dmg without thinking and hammering your spacebar.
Also, prepare to grind all day and night or drop several thousand dollars if you wanna get somewhere close the top.
Now that I think about it, you might consider playing a game that is still worth playing it. Anyway it's up to you, if you like playing boring story missions that are written poorly (railroading storytelling ftw!) go on and have some fun.
First of all OP, Welcome.
One thing I can offer, is to find a good guide for your skill tree. That is by far the most important thing you can learn. Everything else is secondary.
Also, have fun, take your time, don't be afraid to ask questions.
Ive been playing since dec 2012. I'm still enjoying my in game time (helps to find a good fleet).
Send me a mail in game if you want an invite to a Maxed out fleet, we'd be happy to have you. Always looking for new players here. @taylor1701d

I don't understand some of the negative posts on these forums. I can understand not liking one or two things from the game but the whole game in general? And still have time to come here and post about it?
When I truly don't like something I just walk away from it cold turkey...I just don't get it, if some people hate the game so much why do they keep coming back? Gluten for punishment?
I don't know...OP the game isn't perfect but it is fun, social, and hey it's a Trek game so if you're a fan enjoy being what you were probably born to do, be a captain of a starship!

Wow, you are extremely closed minded and way off the mark.
To the OP, play the game to have fun. If fun means playing an engineer tank, there are plenty of folks playing the game that do understand the value a tank brings to the team. Play a drain build, control build, etc. Again, there are folks that appreciate and value what players bring to the team beyond DPS. Yes, there is far more to this game other than DPS, no matter how many folks decry that you should only play tactical captains and go for DPS.
Just started a few days ago, enjoying the game thus far.. Just curious on a few things.. Anyone willing to walk me through the game...
Bridge Officer abilities are a bit part of what makes a ship build. And it takes some learning to figure out which ones are good and which ones are ... not.
Gear is not irrelevant either, of course, but during leveling, there isn't much point to focus on optimizing that, since your gear will get obsolete anyway. (Okay, you could upgrade it to top level gear, but you probably don't have the resources for that yet, so it's a bit moot.)
General guideline is that you want your energy weapons to have the same energy type and probably also the same category (cannons or beams). This is also in large part how the various buffs work. Tactical consoles buff the highest if you stay within the same energy type. Several weapon buff powers buff all weapons of a particular category (beam or cannon).
Science Vessels focus on crowd control, area effects, debuffs. Escorts on plain damage output, and Cruisers on repair abilities. With the additions over the levels and the game's lifetime, both Escorts and Cruisers tend to be geared very strongly towards damage output from their energy weapons.
The "endgame" of Star Trek Online consists mostly of the reputations and the queued missions that go along with it. Other parts are earning specialization points that unlock new passive and active abilities, Crafting and the Duty Officer system. With the last two, you can either already start with or will be able to start very soon.
A Fleet might also be part of your personal endgame. Unless you actually have a bunch of friends that are not yet in a fleet yet or at least want to found their own fleet, it's a better idea to join an existing one. Building up a fleet is resource intensive, but comes with rewards in form of access to special gear and unlocks. And of course, actually having people to talk with about the game and whatever else you like to talk with strangers in the internet is a good perk, too.
Star Trek Online Advancement: You start with lowbie gear, you end with Lobi gear.

I've only been honest. There is no endgame content other than PvP (dead) and the DPS race (tac captain dps > all).
If you don't agree on the fact that any other role than dps is massively underperforming, you're clearly playing a different game. I'm not saying you can't play Sci or Eng, but they are 100% unnecessary. This game is designed by n00bs for n00bs - the most effective builds are the ones that require the least skill and thinking these days.
If OP is here for PvP (which was glorious in the past btw): Run and never look back.
If OP is here for challenging PvE: Run, you don't need teamwork, you don't need skill, you don't even need to think. You only need craploads of AoE dmg.
If OP is here for Star Trek: Run, it's less and less canon. It's just dinosaurs with freakin lazers.
If OP is here for good Stories: Run, there's just boring railroading - your decissions don't matter at all.
If OP is here for role playing: Fine, have fun until the servers are going to shut down due to cryptics incompetence.
This is not closed minded or bad slandering or whatever - it's just the truth about a game that had great potential and wasted it all.

Honest can also be completely useless. There are posts like yours in response to "Hi, I am new here", probably on every MMO forum for every MMO in the world. And they are likely to not help the poster at all. There is always some guy that dislikes a particular game. Better point them in how to enjoy the game, not why he should avoid the game.
And you are also not honest at all.
This game has an endgame. Reputations, Specializations. These are all endgame. Similar things exist in other MMOs, and are also considered engame there. And there also people there, as there are here, that find it insufficient, boring or whatever.
Star Trek Online Advancement: You start with lowbie gear, you end with Lobi gear.
I can't watch people say STO doesn't have an endgame without hysterical laughter.
These people need to go see what that's really like sometime.
"He shall be my finest warrior, this generic man who was forced upon me.
Like a badass I shall make him look, and in the furnace of war I shall forge him.
he shall be of iron will and steely sinew.
In great armour I shall clad him and with the mightiest weapons he shall be armed.
He will be untouched by plague or disease; no sickness shall blight him.
He shall have such tactics, strategies and machines that no foe will best him in battle.
He is my answer to cryptic logic, he is the Defender of my Romulan Crew.
He is Tovan Khev... and he shall know no fear."
Like asking someone to teach you to drive... the game is too complex to just explain how the game works, you just need to play and discover things by yourself, most of em.
All very decent input... Major question on my mind is , what is the currency and how do I get it? I need new ship, weapons you name it...
Secondly,,why can't i go to any system I want, I am so far limited to 2 systems and I am level 3, I think...
~ Main Currency is Energy Credits This is gotten from Buying and selling Weapons, Consoles and other Loot!
~ Secondary Currency is Dilithium , this is usually a Missions/Doff Rewards. This is used for upgrades and other end-game stuff.
~ There is also ZEN , This can be purchased with Real Money or converted from Dilithium. This is used for Buying Ships and other Special Things from the Zen Store.
For more Detailed information abour Game Currency check out this link. Some info may be outdated so if you are confused just ask here! http://sto.gamepedia.com/Currency
Second, the Initial Story line is designed to act somewhat as a tutorial and will take you around sector space to different system. Most systems in-game are only accessible if you have a story missions or a Patrol mission for the area. Is there somewhere specific you are trying to go that you cannot?
Welcome to the Game. I will try to address you original comment and I would also encourage you to join a fleet. Teamspeak for fleets actually make the experience more enjoyable. Ok here is what I would suggest. If you like the missions, I would suggest the following:
Starting Out/Causal Player
The Fed: The Arc is pretty cool and kind steps through the different Star Trek Shows starting with TOS, TNG, and ending in DS9. Delta Rising is pretty much all about Voyager. I would run through the missions and use the gear that you get. Just realize that they mission gear that you get will be sub optimal when you get to level 50.
The Romulan: I really like the Legacy of Romulus Story. It is really fun and most of the missions are more fun than the Fed arc because many of the Fed missions are from the beginning of the game and need a refresh.
The Kling: Cryptic typically hates Klingon but the story Arc is interesting. I would definately roll an alt to try it it out from beginning to end. You get to go to the Klingon Afterlife how cool is that.
Any gear will do for these types of mission. A couple of tips set weapons power to maximum in space so that you can get through space battles faster. Typically you want to have the same weapons type and ship consoles. Pick the ship that you generally like.
Got to Level 50/I am starting to get addicted.
Level 50 was the end game for the game for many years. Now it is level 60. Basically you get specialization points after level 50. Be careful spending them because after 60 it is bit of a grind to get these. I typically do Intelligence first than Pilot. But you can check it out and decide for your self.
Reputation? Basically you have to grind STFs to get reputation marks. You have to slot the projects once per every 20 hours. It takes you 40 days or so to get to the top of a reputation system. After that you can buy tokens so that you alts can get done in 20 days. The first time that you do them you per day you get a bonus 55 marks so marks are pretty easy to get Here how you get marks easily:
Patrols in Taw Dewa, New Romulus Epoh Tagging- Romulan
Dyson Battle Zone - Dyson
Undine Space Battle Zone - Undine
Patrols in the Delta Quadrant - Delta
Nukara Ground (Need a Space Suit) Crystalline Entity - Nukara
STFs of a fun way of getting marks. But you are probably not going to do well. The only STF that you should pug is Crystaline Entity.
DPS: You need to get to 10k DPS parsed before you can joint the DPS channel. You need to join this channel to have a reasonable good experience in DPS. How do you get there?
1. Get the same Weapons Type. (Tetyron is cheap because everyone hates it.) Again you are just trying to get DPS.
2. Get a Decide Warp Core with Amp. (Need to Join a Fleet for this)
3. Get Tac consoles that support your weapons type. (Again Tetryon is dirt cheap.)
4. Get Some Armor to keep you alive.
5. Manage Power Levels. You want Weapons Power to get Close to 125 as possible.
6. Skill Tree (The gear in these builds are very Expensive): You want the skill tree for tac to look something like these: http://www.stoacademy.com/tools/skillplanner/?build=feliscimdr3_8835 or http://www.stoacademy.com/tools/skillplanner/?build=nandi_7227
7. Get some white or green doffs and manage your build with them. I.E. Damage Control Engineers to reduce Emergency to Weapons Powers. Technicians for Aux to bat build.s
8. What Ryan STO's Web Blogs: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j9ocZfZAHJk
9. Learn about Craft so that you can make your own stuff.
Ton of information so I would start with Ryan's Blogs.
Just started a few days ago, enjoying the game thus far.. Just curious on a few things.. Anyone willing to walk me through the game...
I'm just going to bypass most of this conversion and reply to you directly.
The poster that said the game is too complicated to just explain is absolutely right. But the good news is, it's easy to learn and not nearly as intimidating as most online games that have been around 5+years.
The story line content is very forgiving.. it's not hard and you won't have to worry about having a 'perfect build' or anything like that. Just play through the story, do the missions, have fun and enjoy the game.. that's all you have to do. You will eventually finish the story and find yourself around level 50-60 where you will start building your 'end game ship.' By this point, you'll know far more about the game but you'll still have questions. At that point, please feel free to ask your specific questions, rather it's build advice, ship selection, how to acquire a certain resource.. whatever you need.
It will be much easier for us to address your specific questions then it will be to try and just explain to you how the game 'works.' You're actually in the best part of the game right now, there is no pressure at all, and all you have to do is play and enjoy yourself. Build your ship, gather your crew, rise in the ranks and just be the best Starfleet/Klingon/Romulan officer you can be. When you get through it and need to know where to go next, we'll be here to help you. There is nothing you can do right now that can't be changed later, there are no irreversible mistakes, all you need to focus on is enjoying the story.
The last piece of advice I would give is to not put weight into peoples opinion of the game. Not mine, not anyone else either. There are a bunch of varied opinions, from one extreme end of the spectrum to the next. Ultimately though, you should form your own opinion and decide for yourself. The game is free, you can experience it without having to commit anything but your time. Form your own opinion and decide for yourself.
thanks people.. I may return with future questions....Don't close this thread....
I doubt they'll close the thread, unless it violates the ToS or TRIBBLE breaks out they rarely do, but it is severely frowned upon to post in a thread that has seen no post in 30+ days. Yes that includes threads you've started. If the 30 day limit runs out just start a new one.
It seems your questions are already well covered so I have nothing really to add expect that If you're having fun then good. And just ignore the pessimistic crowd.
Logic is the beginning of wisdom, not the end of it.

This is accurate. Not to mention it takes forever for a beginner to earn enough ECs for the next best thing unless you are ready to fork over some real money. Good luck.

Welcome to Star Trek Online.
Just remember, if you come back after one months Time, then do not post in this thread, start a new one.
If you need a fleet to help you PM on forum as well. Ours is very friendly group of people...always ready to help others
Original STO beta tester.
Is chat broken? I can see ppl right near me and i ask for in game help and no answer....
How do I get a new ship.... the one I start with sucks....
This is accurate. Not to mention it takes forever for a beginner to earn enough ECs for the next best thing unless you are ready to fork over some real money. Good luck.
