Hi I want to suggest changing the torpedo system not the torpedoes:
Some people like torpedoes some do not. I would like to see one forward and one aft universal weapons slot. The reason for this is the multi-mode projectile weapons slot would allow a player to fire more than one type of torpedo from the launcher. They would hot key up to three types torpedoes. Example would be Neutronics, Particle Emission and Plasma. They could then load and fire that type of torpedo from a single weapons slot. The aft slot would allow them to use mines or torpedoes. If they choose not to use torpedoes they would simply go to any star ship customization NPC and change the universal slot to "Universal" which would allow any weapon.
The two choices would be "Universal" or "Multi-mode Projectile".
Here is why, In the show they could choose the type of projectiles to load without having the alter the torpedo tube. Also torpedoes are situational. One torpedo does not fit all. A ship would likely carry more than one type of torpedo anyway so why not make the most of it?
Probes
What caption would dare leave the star base without a few probes?
So here is room for a whole new kind of probes
1. Shield Sensor probe does not damage but can analyze shields and allow all incoming projectiles a 10% bleed through for 3 seconds (Ample time to re-modulate the shields). This could be nullified by the target using hazard emitters or reverse shield polarity.
2. Exploration Probe Used for exploration missions (when you make them hint hint). This is a probe you can lunch into a nebula that will collect data. You return after the cool down and retrieve with a tractor beam to get XP and crafting material. It is like the unknown nebula but will work in any nebula. Different nebula will have a different pseudo-random crafting materials.
3. Viral Probes you already have them now but they would now be loadable from the multi-mode projectile bay
4. Type II Explorations probes (after a reasonable grind lol. These probes can be fired at planets we cannot land on to collect samples. When the player returns he can beam the probe on to receive crafting materials.
Here is the logic behind the probe system. We have way more planets than we can land on. The code to have us land on every planet would be semi-impossible. Actually nothing is impossible for a programmer that is why I phrased it as such. That said, The code to have planets give up crafting material would not be that hard.
You may have guessed it, I am a huge fan of the crafting system in this game and want to see it expand. Hopefully you cannot blame me for that. I am also a huge fan of exploration. And I would love to see that expand. You have to understand that all players are not here to fight and fight only. Also it never hurts to attract players who are more into exploration and crafting from other games because these players means additional revenue. STO has become too focused on fighting and I feel that you are not really listening to the players. The players can tell you what they want to buy. It is good to listen. Case in point: how may players have asked for a T6 B'rel yet you simply ignore them. They will buy it. That is money you are throwing away. I just found out that the Romulans are getting a raider but not the KDF. WHY? That makes absolutely no sense at all. We were the ones asking for a raider for a long time and you give us another ship that most players will not buy. Yet I was told that a DEV was complaining that KDF ships do not sell. They don't because you will not make the ship we want to buy. We are not fed. Feds like cruisers, we like raiders. Yes this rant may offend you. But you just offended us with yet another useless ship we do not want while giving the other faction the ship we asked for.
I spend a lot of money on this game but I w\am not buying another ship or any keys or anything because it t\really hurt learning that the Romulans are getting a raider and we are getting another pile of junk. The only real useful ship we got since the B'Rel retrofit was the pilot ships, which are fun toys. The moment I learned that we were getting TRIBBLE again was a dark day.
If you would simply tell us what KDF players did that upset you all so bad that you feel the need to put the screws to us on every turn maybe we could work something out. But to continually punish us without any explanation is wrong. No one deserves that. Even a murderer is told why they are being punished. If you really do not want KDF players in the game that bad them remove the faction and we can take our money elsewhere.

As for probes, they probably won't get used either. Organized runs kill mobs so quickly that npcs will be dead in the time it takes to choose a probe and fire it.
Torpedoes don't need their own weapon slots in this game. IMO all they need is faster travel time for non-destructable torps and lower shield resistance to kinetics especially when shield levels go down.

Torpedoes are high damage if you have a clue how to use them. But if you set them to auto fire, then of course they are not going to yield good dps. You have to manually fire them when the enemy shields are down. That is not rocket science yet people seem to not figure this out. Do this and the neutronic torpedo will be in the number one DPS position on the meter.
Also torpedoes are very ship dependent. Loading them on a cruiser is a bit silly even though they were on cruisers in the TV series and some people like to create that experience. But on a Bird of Prey, or other raider, you can have a front and rear torpedo and have them nr 1 and 2 on the table while still getting over 25k DPS or more depending on space set, weapons quality and so on. My B'Rel can hit 29k in a pug all day long with a frond and read torpedo just because I know when to fire them.
As for the probes someone will use them. If a probe causes shield bleed through or shield failure someone would use it. Maybe not you being superman but someone else who needs the extra bleed through would fire a probe and then a torpedo for extra damage. Firing a probe into a nebula would be fun, having it return crafting material would be awesome. Same thing for all those planets we past out there looking pretty and wasting space.
Just because you do not like an idea does not make it invalid unless you work for Cryptic who is not reading any of this.
My opinion is no more valid than yours. I shared my opinion and that's that.
That said, I love torpedoes. I love them enough that my main ship is a torp boat. I'd want them to get better too. Unfortunately, I don't think this is the way to do it given the current game mechanics. Making a universal slot isn't going to solve the basic problems kinetic users face.

That said, I do like the idea of having different slots for different weapon types, I've always wondered why my Armitage has cannon ports and beam arrays on the model but I can slot all cannons or all beams... Unfortunately this isn't how STO is designed and changing it 'under the hood' would likely be extremely problematic. Nice concept though.
As for probes, this would be very cool and would allow players to gather crafting materials from just about anywhere! It could even make use of those planets in Sector Space that serve no purpose as of yet...
