And yet people didn't get their pannies in a wald about that alien drooling over the male stripper in Hassan's bar on Nimbus:rolleyes:. Get over it people.

I thought it was cuz nobody played the Nimbus missions. :P
I remain empathetic to the concerns of my community, but do me a favor and lay off the god damn name calling and petty remarks. It will get you nowhere.
I must admit, respect points to Trendy for laying down the law like that.

Honestly, I find the suggestion that showing a homosexual relationship is a 'mature' theme condescending. The game is rated T - as in for teenagers! They're already learning about sexuality in school (at least in the UK, we learn that when we're 11, and the game is rated 12 here). If they were showing the two in an intimate scene, then that would be mature, but it would be the same for a heterosexual couple.

Heck, at 12 years old, I was allowed to watch Babylon 5 Season 3, and one of their episodes clearly inferred a homosexual relationship between two of the characters (confirming it midway through the season).

Why was this little thing suddenly considered 'mature'? If kids below 12 are playing the game, it's because their guardian(s) allowed them to. They fully know what themes their kids can legally be exposed to at that age rating. As for people at 12? They're going to have relationships of their own soon enough - or know someone who does. Some of them will even be homosexual in nature. I can understand protecting them from sexual imagery, but this episode had none of that.

Just my two cents. The 'Mature' argument holds no water.

EDIT: I'd also like to credit Trendy for shutting that thread down. Regardless of whether I agree with the views expressed in the post provoking the events which led to the thread being locked, the person who made that post is a human being and does not deserve to be hounded like that anymore than anyone else. That, and by constantly naming and shaming said individual, they were breaking the forum rules.

By the way, Trendy, can I just say that I really enjoy your moderating style? The purple text expressing sound effects of the mighty hammer of ban really made me smile. :)

I mean, I like some background detail on the characters I'm interacting with, so I appreciate the bit, but nobody is being forced to contemplate the implications of anything except the danger of accidentally detonating omega particles.

And you don't even need to worry about that, since for some reason you never end up detonating the charges.

Yeah, that's the part that stuck in my craw. The ladies? No problem. Kahless? Klingons have always had a tendency to soliloquize when they should be getting on with the killing. I think it's because of all those operas. But why in pluperfect hell did we not at least blow up the two reactors we'd rigged? Even a partial victory is still a victory!

If you ask me, zone chat alone should merit the game a Mature rating--and if other MMO's are the same, I would treat them the same as well. I have been sure for years that I would never allow my children if I had any to play STO, because I do not think the cesspool that is in-game chat is fit for children. I have also had problems with the way sexuality in general is treated in-game. The majority of it is a player-generated problem--such as scantily-clad, exaggerated-proportions female toons, people who are jerks to those who have female avatars, people who use their toons to simulate inappropriate acts as a form of harassment, etc.

But I have come across content I don't care for. Personally I do not play the Summer Event because even though most of the events are innocent, some aren't exactly so (horgh'an hunt--remember what those statues mean), and I do not feel I can in good conscience participate in what according to canon is a sort of alien bacchinalia. I don't want to see it, even in innuendo.

I guess I've been a bad person all this time.

On the topic of some of the strong community reaction against the inclusion of a same sex partnership element in the episode: we know so little about the fictional Klingon society that same sex relationships could well be accepted; it's really our own human prejudices that would lead to an automatic assumption that it wouldn't be seen as a legitimate coupling.

God help us if we were to actually encounter an alien race in which sexuality took on a form other than what we've allowed ourselves to believe is right.

This is what Star Trek is all about; seeking out new life AND new civilizations; exposing our minds and preconceived views of the universe to new ideas and ways of thinking: stepping out of humanity's infancy, as Star Trek once put it. It's sad that the very ideals of Star Trek are lost on so many players of a Star Trek game.

If this divisiveness should remind us of anything, it's that we have a lot of growing to do together as a species. Maybe the Vulcans had a point: we're not ready. On the other hand, maybe it's humanity's stubborn nature to need to force itself into new situations in order to grow, because otherwise, no amount of passing time will get us ready for what we'll meet out there.

I think the problem there was in "safely" detonating. With only 2 charges it'd almost certainly create a void where warp drive was non-functional.

I've read the article in question and must say the writer got his information from trolls. If this is what counts for STO publicity, lets tell the story as it is. There's been no flame war, just some emotional players expressing their opinions in a mostly civil manner in several threads; until a group of the usual flamers set on politicizing this issue for their gain at STO's expense. I dealt with one of them yesterday morning who was going around for hours in different channels and zone chat, revving people up to spam Trendy if heads didn't roll come Monday. A few he revved up, many did not adhere to his hype; then when one of the moderate players who disapproved of the militarism left after politely voicing his opinion, another of the players the flamer had pumped up started saying to everyone that the guy (who had just left) is a racist, a bigot, does not support LBGT and everyone should put him on ignore. Voicing an opinion pro or anti LBGT is one thing, attacking people behind their backs is another. I and a few others were around, we kept things as calm as possible and the troll left. Players here sometimes deal with those types, but it has nothing to do with LBGT or whatever is the next hot-button issue, trolls and flamers simply use issues to gain a foothold and pretend they run the game... (threatening to use co-workers to collude behind Trendy's back... how thick can you be?). This happens in every major MMOG. Not that it can't be fixed or a system implemented which encourages good behavior, but it's more complicated than an errant article writer would have readers believe.

Responsible players who've been around for a long time like many in this thread and myself know what goes on daily in game. I don't know any among them that can rightly call themselves responsible who agree with the minority handful of troublemakers that backstabbing and personal attacks to fulfill their agenda is something they go along with. Simply put, the House Pegh issue wouldn't be around if there weren't those intent on making it an issue to please themselves.

I'm straight, am not bothered by House Pegh or any other LBGT references. Nor after keeping trolls at bay yesterday will I stand idly by and let a minority few poison players with lies to achieve villainous ends. I will politely interrupt if I see anyone flaming this issue in-game and insist on a change of subject. Good players have been doing well so far in being both civil and sensible. Many including myself welcome the same in-game. Promoting good behavior is what we should be doing, not having to clean up after someone else's mess.

And one more thing. Based on my observations Trendy is a capable administrator and does not need to be told how to deal with staff or players. As a regular player, if I hear any more of what I heard yesterday in-game, I will peaceably intervene and request a change of subject. This spectacle's over, let's get back to the game.

If the ESRB included online interactions in a normal rating, all games with online features and text or voice communication would be rated A for adults.

At least that would be truthful advertising to parents, who would then have no excuse not to know what the full risks were of allowing their kids to play unsupervised. Unfortunately not all parents seem to realize the extent of trolling and cyberbullying that other players can perpetrate (or that THEIR perfect little angels could do to others!) when they just allow their kids to do whatever.

Maybe we need another thread for cyberbullying...

Well, now I'm sort of hoping that Cryptic adds in homosexual dinosaurs with lasers on their heads that drive Tier 6 Escorts available only to Federation players.

You must be extremely new to the internet in general then if you think the STO community in general is somehow worse then other internet gaming (or other groups) in general. It's a mirror of the world we live in - so you're always going to have varying levels of tolerance when it comes to things our world society in general finds divisive.

i.m not going to state my particular views on the issue - just say that (as long as it's expressed in a civil manner); EVERYONE is entitled to their own opinion or belief. That's why we have laws - to limit what someone can legally engage in - in society - and allow everyone is treated similarly regardless of what their personal belief may be. And that's across many DIFFERENT divisive issues and not just the issue that precipitated the responses from both sides on the STO forums.

I have been reading so let there is that. Let me try to cover everything said.

For the people calling me thin skinned or naive. MMOs biggest strength and weakness comes for its communities. Case in point, if you look past the cheesecake of Tera and a game even worst than Tera when it comes to cheesecake (that I played and is a slightly shamed about that fact) you would see good gameplay but one game have a publisher that makes me laugh at people when they call Cryptic/PWE "greedy" and anytime I have looked at the other game the playerbase makes me think I'm playing Drozana Online.

For those reasons I avoid those games. Another game I forgot while I was typing. ED, the way players from that game acted here makes me NEVER want to be around them again.

Well I think that covered the replies I was mostly getting. Another random STO fact of Rose. STO is my first Star Trek game and is the reason why I finally got into Star Trek on a whole. I mean everyone knows about Spock, neck pinches, and the like but first time I have heard Khan and Kirk face off it was on Deferi while an Andorian DJ was playing it on Thankgiving.

the Asari is assumed to be female, but they have both bits needed, not asexual but rather require a member of another species primarily, its possible for two Asari to have a child (Liara as primary example of a "purebreed") but not much more details then that is known, it is not known for certain if they are truely female at all and you will need to find some proof to back it up. as for the comparison to females of klingons, i cant make that comparison because i dont know if the asari are actually female.

Actually, according to the Mass Effect wikia, Asari are mono gendered and only require the genetic material of a second parent to initiate the reproduction process. They do not possess "bits", persay. The proof is here. Second paragraph down from the Biology section. They claim to not recognize gender differences, yet the galaxy and even themselves refer to them as female. They use terms as "She" and "Her" instead of gender neutral terms such as "they".
