Instead of whining about your "investment", sell the materials you got from all those boxes and you can BUY one of the Sheshars (or whatever it's called) for ECs on the Exchange! Like people here said, it's a LOTTERY, that's why it sais "CHANCE" on the box. Besides, with all that lobi you can buy a lobi ship and sell it for 100 mill, combine that with the crafting mats and you can easily buy one anyway.

Dear me, I really do understand why Trendy needs a break every so often, I often wonder where she keeps finding the patience to deal with these guys.

Hmmmm. Suddenly had an idea/question - what if someone sells the materials and whatever else you get from, let's say, 90$ worth of R&D boxes, like in OP's case, - will it theoretically be enough to get the ship ?

That is what a lot of people end up doing if they want a specific item from a gambling boxes.

Now i dont know if the OP is one of those people that thinks they are clever for trying to troll using a legit topic. But with lockbox systems like the one STO has or the one SWTOR has (or in any other game) if you want something specific from a lockbox you should not open lockboxes with the expectation that you will get exactly the item you want. If you are going to open a bunch of lockboxes then what you want to do is sell everything off and make EC and then buy that specific item that you want from the auction house with EC (assuming it is able to be put on there).

You should have bought 90$ in keys and sold them on the exchange. You would have made enough credits to buy the ship off the exchange.

90x 2.6mil (~current price of lock box keys) = 234 mil EC. Cheapest Sheshar ship I saw was 380 mil a few days back.

Still always better to just buy off exchange, though. But the, you know, actual R&D materials can be sold again too to recoup some of the loss.

I swear one of these threads happens every time they have a special R&D or DOff pack ship.

And by spending 90$ you have supported the crappy RNG lockbox system. The only person at fault here is YOU.

But if you bought $100 in Zen when it was on sale (15% + ?6%?) = 1,2100 zen. If you then bought the keys on sale at 15% off = 142 keys = 370 million.

Planning ahead vs. instant gratification makes a huge difference.

Yeah. Assuming keys are always at 2.6 mil, of course. :) They haven't been for a long time. They were 2.1 for a while (and shortly even a bit below). Once upon a time they went for 3 mil even, but that was at least a year or two ago.

well im not playing this anymore. you trollers win. ok im leaving thanks for ruining it for me. i was just venting and hopefully getting insight into others being screwed on this as well.

    good bye all

Thing is you weren't screwed. It was a Promotion with a chance yes "CHANCE" to win a ship. You weren't ripped off, you were just unlucky.
So soak it up, live and learn. And don't waste $90 on chance again

instead of intentionally gambling your money away for a ship that you have a small amount of chance of getting.

perhaps spend it on something more productive?

that said you are not entirely at fault, R&D packs and loxboxes are bait for impulse buyers. its done intetionally. that part is cryptics fault but they do it on purpose of course.

Oh boo hoo, I spent money on a lottery and didn't win anything, give me the prize anyway. Freaking self entitlement, it's beginning to run rampant. Suck it up princess. You gambled. You lost. Move on!!!

It's a lottery, not a purchase. Cryptic gave you what they said they'd give you: a R&D box with a minuscule chance to get a ship.

Sorry Lilbro, you got exactly what you paid for. You paid your money for the Zen. You got the Zen. You spent the Zen on the R&D Boxes, you got said boxes. The Lobi and Ship were just promotional bonuses. I am sorry you feel ripped off, but spending that money expecting the ship only set yourself up for disappointment.

Some people read this sort of statement and assume it as being a 50/50 chance... although it does not explicitly say that... and are then offended when they don't get the ship within a very small number of attempts.

We all know that it's not 50/50, but that's what I think causes these threads.

I'd hate to call the OP that . . . lacking in understanding.

And spending $90 without bothering to research the actual odds would be . . . impulsive.

OP has allegedly now ragequit the game, but perhaps someone else will read this thread and learn the proper way to turn ~$100 into an Elachi ship with 100% success.

lilbro35, I say go forth and spread the word far and wide how you feel you were rewarded in STO...

Today is a dark and gloomy day... STO has lost one of the greatest players we never got a chance to PUG with due to RnG. Sad day indeed.

    He will be missed....

once a former fleetmate gifted me one doff pack. I found a cell ship inside and traded it for a Mobius + EC. Oh well :D
I need to get to him. I can't just leave him out there alone. - Sometimes you've got to makes sacrifices, Lara. You can't save everyone. - I know about sacrifices. - No, you know about loss. Sacrifice is a choice you make. Loss is a choice made for you. - I can't choose to let him die, Roth.

Pure RNG based luck, you knew this beforehand, yet you tried anyway.

I learned over the course of various games never to waste money on gamble mechanics, I'd much rather get a guaranteed C-Store ship then try to gamble for, say, a Vaadwaur or Elachi ship.

Though a while back I did get a lovely Tuffli freighter from just 1 DOFF pack, and that on stipend Zen.

Simple advice, farm EC through the countless means available, then buy whatever ship you want from the exchange, that's how I got the 10 or so lockbox ships I have spread over my characters.

Just a little bit of math:

We "know" the chance for a lockbox ship is somewhere between 0.5% and 1%.
Lets assume its price-normalized and we assume a chance for a promo ship to be between 1% and 2%.

You get 4 boxes for 1k zen. So 100 boxes is 25k zen which is about 200€/$.

The chance to get a ship assuming 1% chance when opening 100 boxes is about 63%.
That means if 1000 players spend 200 €/$ on opening rnd packs about 2/3rd get a ship and 1/3rd doesnt.

If you spend 90$ I assume you got 40 boxes. That means you have a 32% chance of getting the ship. If 100 player do as you did - only a third got at least one ship on average.

Thats all asuming 1% chance per box for the ship.
If we assume 2% chance per box we get a total of 55% getting one with 40 boxes and 82% chance when opening 100 boxes.

Just for a more average value if we assume 1.5% chance per box and we open 50 boxes we get a 53% chance for getting a ship (or two or more).

So even spending 100€/$ on packs you get only a 50:50 chance of getting the ship.

One BIG issue I see is that like any other gambling system the odds should be clearly posted. Every time the lottery is advertised on TV in the USA or you are at a game of chance you can clearly see the odds. It should be illegal not to clearly state the odds since it is gambling.

I wonder how many people would open lockboxes if the odds where clearly stated.

I think that cryptic relies on burning people. People look at the idea of getting a ship from a lockbox but the odds are not posted anywhere obvious. They spend a bunch of money since they think it is only one more box away and either get the ship and keep getting sucked into the gambling cycle or they give up and hate the game. The problem is that the people that give up and hate the game are correct. This type of business model should be illegal and in some areas of the world it is illegal.

If you want gambling fine but the odds should always be clearly visible.

The problem with that is it is not really classed as gambling, which would make it ilegal in some countries or age restrict the game in many. This is why they don't have to publish the odds. People have worked it out and mentioned it more than once. A little seaarch would get that info.

In the case of R&D packsyou are buying and getting the packs with a chance of a ship. Therefore you do get what you pay for the R&D pack. If people are buying the pack for the ship then more fool them, there are easier ways to get it as have been mentioned. If I buy a pack it is for the pack, if I got the ship in the promotion it would go straight on the exchange as it is not something I would use.

Where lockboxes are concerned you always get something it may not be what you want it to be but it is something.

In cases like lotteries, fruit machines and casinos you can walk away with nothing, or a greater anount than you went in with, usually the first mind you. There in lies the difference where I think legalities of gambling come in. That is why you see the odds of the grabd prize mentioned in lotteries, depending on country, and on fruit machines.
