What do you do after you've perfected your ship?

lingeringsoul888lingeringsoul888 Member Posts: 509 Arc User
So I've been upgrading various parts on my ship over the course of the last 6 months and it's been a whole lots of fun learning how to build. It's like your child growing up. I remember the first week when I decided I want to properly build a ship and see what it's feels like to fight with it.

I rememeber the first dps result at 6k, then piece by piece, I upgraded them to mark 14, added various console, changed more console, read up on all the rep items and trying to work out which one will work the best in this build. You feel a real sense of achievement as you see your dps increase. Recently, I'm getting close to 20k, with only 5 fully upgraded AP beam banks and 4 partialy upgraded AP vuln locator. I'm hoping to hit the magic number once these 4 pieces and the 3 rear beams become fully upgraded.

This brings me to the though of "what happens after you've upgraded everything and perfected the current build?" I use the term perfected loosely, and by perfected, I mean when everything is upgraded to mk 14. What do I do then??

I don't really have anything else I can build. Do I continue to throw more dilithium into trying to increase the DPS even more?? Do I start over with a new ship and a new flavour build??

Maybe by then I should stop playing?

I have enough planned atm to keep me entertained

1. I'm going to build a romulan plasma build to see if it's more dps effective.
2. A disruptor build with the new resonant disruptor and transphasic torp and see how well that works in combo

That really is about as far as I've planned. I'm not really interested in doing other flavour build and I honest can't see myself purchasing anymore cruisers.

Maybe I'll take a break for 6 months once these builds are finished and see what new toys awaits when I get back.

I switch up builds. Whether it's on the same ship to do something else or hop onto another ship. I can't stay in one build too long after I got it right because it gets boring real fast. In STO, I have always had the need to change things up and play different styles. Or I get stagnant.

Beamscort? Traditional Cannons-based Escort? Raider? Carrier? Cruiser Beamboats? Traditional DHC Battlecruisers? Science Vessel play? Science Vessel build that excels with low or mediocre Aux Power? Drain Builds? Torpedo Boats?

Sure, I've done lots of them and made them work. Come up with an idea to play the game, fix it, make it work, play it, then do something else.

Move on to the next character, build a different ship that functions on a different principle. If I did a fawboat, next is a partigen sci, then a tank, then a DHC battlecruiser, then a drainer, then...

Eventually gear and meta changes and I get back to a character and its time for an update. Perfect is boring. Repeating myself is boring. Copying someone else is boring and pathetic. The one I haven't done before, or at least haven't done in a long time, is the one to do.

You mean after you put about a billion in upgrading beams to crtdx3 pen epic mk xiv ap beam arrays and then the engines/deflector/shield and stuff like warp core/cutting beam and anlther billion worth of upgrades in all the consoles like tachyokinetic or assimilated console and the like?
And then invested heavily in getting all the nice doffs and boffs and thennafter that got and leveled all the ships for all the good starship traits?

If you really did all that already then by all means go and get yourself some dbbs or go phaser this time:)

If you like to stick to game OP this has been the way to go for me the past 3 years.

My 9 toons made by now gave me a lot of new options previously not accessible by one character. Different gear constellations are distributed and tried out via alts. Aside from new stories, new perspectives form game mechanics’ they also bring me in positions where I have traumatic recourses at my disposal. Upgrading the gear of 1 toon is a laugh compared to that and building a tier 5 star base basically on my own one of the few challenges left for me.

I suggest that you don't aim so high on what you consider a 'finished' build, Mk 14 vr weapons and (main) consoles are good enough for 95% of the content. Then, make a new alt and get a new ship and try a different build.

I was bored enough to (nearly) quite, instead of that I decided to have fun with a 'part gen' build, now I'm really enjoying playing an 'all torpedo' build. Don't worry about DPS, you don't have to be first all the time, just have fun.

Alts are the only thing that keeps me playing, you just have to forget about bothering with maxing out your specialisation points. And if you're really interested in command or pilot, you could always have alts that just focus on that.

Keep pushing for epic on even more gear, flirt with a different ship, keep pushing it performance wise...

Just kidding I can't actually play because of the lag, but that's what I used to do.
    SCM - Crystal C. (S) - [00:12] DMG(DPS) - @jarvisandalfred: 8.63M(713.16K) - Fed Sci

    SCM - Hive (S) - [02:31] DMG(DPS) - @jarvisandalfred: 30.62M(204.66K) - Fed Sci

It was trippy, it couldn't decide which side of the Trans I was on as it rubberbanded me back and forth through a solid object.

Now that I got half my toons maxed out, I'm starting the long process of upgrading my gear to Mark Fourteen.

One or more of new alt, new ship, new build.

It's too bad there are no save games for characters. Part of the fun of a new alt is playing the story missions at low levels in low-level ships without traits and such.

Well... "perfected" is a matter of opinion... but, new ships, consoles, traits come out all the time... chances are what is "perfect" today, won't be next month.

    You went AP. Boring, man.
I have a Tac main, an Eng, a Sci delta.
I'm working on three different builds, at the same time and staying away from easy AP. Maximizing performance, Maximizing efficiency I of console space, etc. I don't play constantly, but the improvements and tweaks are constant.
Take "the road less travelled" and forget about AP.

You want to go for something different. You did All-Beams, try All-Projectiles.

If you really want to go different, try for a High DPS, No-Weapon, No-Gravity Well built.

Science is unspeakably fun! It has the most variety and pairs well with torpedo boats. The new reputation has lots of tasty new goodies!

I only managed to “perfect” the space-build on one of my chars. And perfection is a very subjective term in light of knowledge, personal preference and changing game mechanics.

It took me one year of dedicated play to perfect this single built. I have 9 chars so I check back here in 8 years for further advice.

There is no such thing as perfection: Always room for improvement.
This program, though reasonably normal at times, seems to have a strong affinity to classes belonging to the Cat 2.0 program. Questerius 2.7 will break down on occasion, resulting in garbage and nonsense messages whenever it occurs. Usually a hard reboot or pulling the plug solves the problem when that happens.

Perfected can be pretty content specific, for example aiming for dps measured in ISA will see people usually dump torps( unless kemocite boosted), spend little time travelling between targets targets and risking no armour in the hope of a perfect run.

Personally, I make characters based on a theme. That being a particular ship, build, weapons type, character backstory, etc. I don't, however, spend all my dilithium upgrading the gear. I just don't feel it necessary to participate in the game's content and I have two fleets that drink up my dilithium anyway.

When I get a character done according to my "vision" for that character, I usually make a new one after all reputation and character level are maxed. Eventually I go back to my older characters, upgrade them with the specializations and crafting systems. Some might get a new rep set, a different ship, or other things. At least having a variety of characters to choose from (28), I can pick one to play for whatever reason I have at the moment.

If you are one if those who has a single character, or maybe two or three, sure, max out their crafting skills and go for the Epic quality gear and max out every aspect of your character(s). Do what you feel is the best investment of your time and/or money. If you just want to experiment with a different profession or race, by all means, make an alt character. If you don't like having that new character, you can simply stop playing that one and your main character is unaffected. Maybe in the future, you might become interested in experimenting again and already have an alt made to experiment with.

You rename your ship 'Perfect' then keep reminding everyone in chat that your ship is perfect, really spam it, because they need to know.
Well excuse me for having enormous flaws that I don't work on.

I fly around looking for picturesque spots to do screen shots, then get bored and buy a new ship.
