Seriously Sir Taco, INCREASE ambient light from sector space stars

doubleohninedoubleohnine Member Posts: 818 Arc User
Im fine with darkness is the new black, and Ive read your responses in similar threads, but you're still wrong bro. I just stuck the nose of my starship within 1 LY of a big white star, and spinning the camera around to look back at my ship, it still looks like Im in darkness. A fair compromise for what you intended and what we the players want, me anyways, Id like to see TNG level ship lighting on my ship when Im within 4 LY of a star system in sector space. That way its still mostly dark out there, but we REALLY get our ships lit up when we are passing by them relatively close. Can you at least do that for us? Is that an easy to tweak request?

I know INSIDE a star system the lighting is good. I just think the light is too stingy in sector space. Unless your auto path practically flys THROUGH a star, the ENTIRE trip is darkly lit ships. You know in tv shows when they do nighttime car scenes and other cars pass them by and you see the headlights light up the insides of the car, we dont even have that. Part of the fun of traveling so far to reach your next location in this new sector space is to get your ship really lit up here and there along the way. That isnt happening at all anymore.

Please don't taco. It's great. Sometimes the loudest or most insistent group isn't the majority.

I like the current settings. A darker sector space is much closer to reality. In my opinion they shouldn't change a thing.

And it is this thread again.

Taco already said he increased the lightning a bit internally for a next patch.

But still, this is for sector space only, most of your time you'll see your ship because you'll be shooting baddies in a system.

Well then they better remove 95% of the game 'cuz dat s#it ain't real .

Taco's current version is much closer to 1/6 of what it took to create the actual FX shots on the show .
(hint : what the FX guy refer to as "Beauty Pass" is totally missing)

But you're welcome to come up with a few shots from the shows that look like what we have today .
In the mean time , I'll keep a lookout for Taco's lighting upgrade (whenever that'll make it into the game) .

... make it like it was on the show ...

I agree the ships need to be more visible. This is a Star Trek game and in my opinion, the ships at warp should look like the ships at warp at the show. I appreciate the effort for realism and to recreate the darkness of space, but the game isn't meant to reflect reality. It is meant to recreate something from a well established show/IP so there are certain things it has to adhere to. The way ships look in space/sector space IMO is one of those things.

If only to make everyone happy, why not make it an in-game setting that users can tweak?

the thing is when you are in sector space you are outside of the solar system try sitting on say Neptune inside our solar system and see how only about one thousandth of the sunlight received by our planet reaches there and is only is about 0.0005 of a light year from the sun.
given this how much light from a sun do you think you would see at even only 1 light year regardless of its size.

When I think about everything we've been through together,

maybe it's not the destination that matters, maybe it's the journey,

and if that journey takes a little longer,

so we can do something we all believe in,

I can't think of any place I'd rather be or any people I'd rather be with.

Regardless of realism some people want to actually marvel at the beauty of our ships, some of the art work on the ships is amazing but it's wasted if you can't actually see it, as it is we might as well be flying 8bit blocks because the way it is we wouldn't see the difference.

I'm not saying this will work for everyone as Im sure people have different prefrences but I just increased my brightness in the options and I found it was good enough and even helped on the ground. I think the default is set a little too low.

Seriously Sir Taco, DECREASE ambient light from sector space stars
    +100
    I FULLY agree.

Yes, you know what I did.
    Point?
Don't get back to the previous, unrealistic state of what it once was.
Again, this game is not a "show my boat", but a Star Trek MMO.
The point is to kill what has to be killed, not becoming a ship modeling agency.

Which also means it has to look like Star Trek right? Therefore, ships should appear brighter in Sector Space just like they did in the show while they were at warp.

As someone pointed this out: It's STO, not much in here is canon, it's an MMO. :)

Plz don't confuse the hypocrites .

    ... it makes'em sound like "I wann'it 'cuz I wann'it " -- while in the same breath they will clamor for a show accurate DS9 revamp ...

Wondering when the first one will ask for invisible phasers. Because those light spreading beams we have would be way too ineffective and therefore not realistic enough.

I dont play for realism, but for trek. And I dont need a logic reason for something looking better than in reality^^

Lighting in sector space is just fine. Space is supposed to be black. :)

Bridge-interior lighting, however, could maybe use some work, here and there.

This. The Origin bridge is still in need of actual lighting.

Unless you're spending the majority of your time idling in sector space, seeing your ship shouldn't be a huge problem. When you're doing space missions, lighting is just fine.

This topic belongs in the F.C.T. IMO.

If they give this option to other players, give me the option to keep space as it is. Cryptic made it beautiful. My only complaint is that the Delta Quadrant really feels cramped now compared to the rest of the maps.

Leave sector space alone, lonely and dark is prefect and this change just about the best thing they've ever done. The hubs still exist and you can stare at your ship and those of other players all you want to there.

What needs to return is a few Cargo Ships. One per quadrant would be nice.

taco already said he made some light changes and that they will go into one of the upcoming patches. since patches don't come until thursday screaming about it on tuesday seems somewhat stupid. :)

So someone intentionally made the lighting in this game to give people headaches? Then when people complain about it they insist on keeping it that way? Seriously, the game lighting is dark enough it makes people squint all the time while playing it. All that squinting gives a person a headache. Sure you can turn up the brightness, but by doing so it makes the game look like TRIBBLE.

i'm not squinting. maybe you're just getting old and too proud to accept that you need glasses? :)

Nothing happens in sector space. All the "playing" goes on in instances where the lighting is brighter. Sector space is only used for traveling between point "a" and "b" by players that refuse to pay transwarp fees.
it's also full of little exploration nodes that grant crafting supplies. so people do need to be able to see those things.

The problem with things like this is that it's possible it's not even a preference thing, but a monitor/graphics settings thing.

I can see my ships perfectly fine, but when I play video games I use dim lighting as opposed to full-bright room lighting.
