Firstly I know people hate the idea of console ports but plenty of my friends do like the ports, so do I.
Anyway as a long term STO fan I like the idea of switching between console and pc gaming, I was just playing Neverwinter on the Xbox One which is pretty fun, got me thinking again that Perfect World should consider porting more mmorpg style games like STO. It does seem to be coming a common theme lately with games like DC universe coming to the Ps4 and Elder Scrolls online coming to both consoles.
Plus at moment there's a serious lack of Star Trek on next gen consoles so it be nice to fill the void. I've even recently noticed that Arc is now on the Xbox One so I suspect Arc may eventually start porting their other games eventually.
NW was designed to be played on both systems, while STO was not. Well, not exactly. It was explained that *very* early in development they tried to keep build STO's systems in a way that could work for console, but they have gradually gotten further and further away from that, and things have now gotten so complex that it would be virtually impossible to port. The only way STO could be on console is if the console version was a completely separate version of the game, with far less systems and options. So if that is what you want, it *might* be possible.
Not only NO but HELL NO! It's bad enough we ended up with Apple support on what was a great PC only game. It seems like ever since Apple were supported the Servers have been crashing and Lag has been worse then ever.

There is another option ... but it would never happen. Release a keyboard and mouse peripheral bundle for xbox one, and require it to play STO.
It wouldn't be impossible, but it would be very difficult.
When you look at Neverwinter or DCUO it is obvious that they are quite different from STO. You get a few main attacks, and then have a few "sortcut-keys" for a few more actions and that's it. STO has a lot of abilities and configuration possibilities which make a practical system of using them a lot harder on a console.
It's like you have a flight simulator, than on a PC uses every single key on the keyboard plus multiple key combinations and a flight simulator on a console in which you can do movements, fire missiles, bombs or gun, and that's it.

Sure it might take a bit of figuring out but I'm sure they'll be ways to config, maybe even include the usual tricks like keybinding since Neverwinter does have a chat window so things like distrubting shields on STO wouldn't be as much of a problem plus when it comes to abilities it's possible to include different ways to config it to be suitable while the ground combat is already pretty basic so shouldn't be too hard.
Wow, are you going to use the post for a number of threads. Given that STO will be on a completely different servers and it would be a different animal than PC STO, but I have invested way too much in the PC version to go to the xbox. However, I am loving Neverwinter on Xbox one.
There is another option ... but it would never happen. Release a keyboard and mouse peripheral bundle for xbox one, and require it to play STO.
For STO you'd virtually need a KB/Mouse setup as it would indeed be extremely difficult with a gamepad...
I've always said that consoles were losing business by not releasing KB/Mouse combos as I, and a few PC gaming friends, refuse to buy consoles as none of us like gamepads... We all grew up playing PC games and that's what we're comfortable with...
What usually happens instead though are games and their respective control interface being 'dumbed down' to work well with a gamepad and then those controls are ported (usually quite badly) over to the PC...

I know you really want this to happen, but the reality is it is extremely unlikely. It would also most certainly take up a huge amount of the dev's time, which would mean a huge reduction in normal content and development while trying to make it happen.
They'd have to dumb down skills for it. I hate the idea of dumbing any game down for consoles, but in the case of STO I'd actually prefer they dumbed down ground combat by replacing most active skills with passives and only allow a couple actives at any given time. In doing so they could rework ground combat to a 3rd person shooter style gameplay that has proven to be successful in the form of other games (ZMR, Warframe etc.) rather than an RPG style of play.
As far as space goes I'm definitely not a fan of it being dumbed down in any way shape or form.
One reason I would love this even though I haven't played console games in about a decade. If they can reach a wider playerbase where they can tone down the massive micro transactions required to play it and have fun I'd be willing to re-install NW. I might be old fashioned gamer but when I buy something its like with KDF assembly lines with doffing trading my time to buy it or flat out buying something with substance that isn't going to make me keep coughing up money every time I want to get to the next dungeon or loading screen.
In all they could just make a lower skill using version of STO for it and players who play like that would be a certain kind of officer from various factions. Might also be the reason after 5 years why the KDF is practically getting everything we had been waiting for years to get. Command ships, negh'var, pic leak of a new qin raptor, and then on a podcast talks of bop being priority and then art being worked on for KDF. Something is happening maybe not on Xbox one but definatly something.
Not only NO but HELL NO! It's bad enough we ended up with Apple support on what was a great PC only game. It seems like ever since Apple were supported the Servers have been crashing and Lag has been worse then ever.
absoLUTEly what he said. it'll just turn STO into an IDiots games, like so many OTHer ports that should NEVer have been taken away from PCs, where they RIGHTfully belong
WE SURVIVE!
aut vincere aut mori pro imperio
either to conquer or to die for the Empire
Well that's not entirely true. Delta Rising already dumbed this game down to 4 buttons for PvP:
a) basic skill chain aka spacebar
b) "Ohhhhh ****" button
c) vape button
d) "Trololol roflmao" chat macro
PvE can even be played with only one key - your spacebar.
So yes, STO is ready to be ported to any crappy console out there - it really can't get any more stupid or casual.
What they could do for Xbox one is implement a skill wheel or window like Mass Effect! Tap a key and all your skills comes up and you choose the ones you want then release the button. That might be the easiest way around the tons of powers you can use in combat.

I thought Never-winter was extremely unlikely too but this happened so there's no way to tell if it's likely or not to have STO on the X1, the same goes for games like DC Online on the Ps4 which is proving that MMO's can and have been working well with consoles. Anyway as for content and money...there's no reason to say that won't do any better because including the console market means more gamers, which also means more money for PW to increase the budget on STO's later content.

The question is not whether *some* MMOs can work on console, but whether this *specific* one can. And for the reasons I have mentioned previously, I think it is extremely unlikely. The games you mentioned were built from the ground up to be console compatible. This one was not. But speaking hypothetically, would it be cool? Sure, I guess; except for the fact that it would eat up pretty much all development for a long time meaning we we get virtually nothing new until that process was finished.
actually, STO was originally planned for Xbox 360, but not anymore. it is only for PC. and that's it. deal with it
btw, it was in 2010. when they announced it. you can look up old videos on Youtube.
To be clear on this issue, yes, they originally wanted to make this game for PC and console. However, they gave up on that idea so long ago that they stopped designing systems and content with consoles in mind. Therefore trying to port the game to console at this point would mean redesigning a ton of systems and content to be console compatible.

Yes I remember hearing about that since was talking to the dev's back at a convention back when STO was in beta stages. Also the fact that it was aimed at a 360 audience...only makes it seem just as more suitable to X1 due to the upgraded graphics...
It wouldn't be impossible, but it would be very difficult.
When you look at Neverwinter or DCUO it is obvious that they are quite different from STO.
DC has 8 abilities + up to 4 items. (On a keyboard, they map to 1-0 and "-" and "+"). Attacks are done using combinations of the mouse/trigger buttons. (Using handblasters, L click click click hold would be 2 short shots ending in the pulse beam, for example.) It's a neat system, but it'd be utterly impractical for STO.
And while the PS2 on and XBoxen can take keyboards and mice, they're generally really impractical in the den/family room where most of them are set up. So, even if you converted STO to the XBone, but still required a mouse/keyboard, who'd want to play it?

Wait , they enabled zone chat in PVP again ??
... not being able to taunt and / or observe the meltdowns was a major nerf to PVP ...
