I HATE The Cardassian Struggle

I, like many, have gone to the effort to create a Delta Recruit in order to take advantage of the free stuff. It had been a while since I replayed any of the early episodes and I was looking forward to going through it again. In the first week I breezed through the opening episodes and the Romulan story, and I very much enjoyed the experience. I was excited about upgrading my new character and having my regular character reap some of the benefits. Everything was going great until I reached The Cardassian Struggle.
It took me two weeks to slog through The Cardassian Struggle, not because I didn't have the time, but because I had trouble motivating myself to play the next episode, each seemingly more tedious than the last. It was like having a really bad job that you felt obligated to go to cause you needed the paycheck. On many occasions I just couldn't bring myself to play and each time I did I found myself swearing at the characters, the tedious mind games and the ridiculous amount of time it took to complete them. I just wanted it all to end as quickly as possible. Of course the last episode, walking slowly across the surface of Deep Space 9 - OMG it was torture. I have no idea how I got through it the first time, but the second time round...Never Again! They could offer a free Tier 10 Vessel with special Tholian vaporizing torpedos, and I still wouldn't play it again.

    Of course the last episode, walking slowly across the surface of Deep Space 9 - OMG it was torture.

    You're supposed to click on the guide posts and then use the thrusters on your EV suit to fly through that part. :cool:

    As far as I'm concerned, the worst mission in the game is "Of Bajor" where your ranking starfleet officer gets to run around and break up bar fights and scan radio channels and the like under the command of a , Commander... Usually by the time I get to this mission my character is at least a Rear Admiral which just makes it that much worse (though the whole ranking system and storyline missions are idiotic when you have a FLEET ADMIRAL personally taking care of security at conferences and other inane low ranking tasks..). I actually kind of like infiltrating DS9 though. I must have done that mission over a dozen times to equip a couple of my Dominion themed characters with all Dominion Polaron Beam arrays!

    LOL and I thought I may have been alone in that.

    For years I have insured to level my new toons above the requirement so I could simply 'Skip, skip, skip" through that whole story arc.

    Oh gods, I totally agree.

    I was DREADING getting to the Cardassian missions. Say what you will about the rest of the state of the game, but sheesh...those are just a SLOG. I've saved all of them outside of the the two 'required' missions just because I find them so boring. I did ALL the other story missions (except Fluid Dynamics due to the bug it has atm) before the Cardassian ones, as I simply hated the thought of doing them that much.

    But if I want everything, I am gonna have to suck it up, and finish things out. Least it's only once.
    I remain empathetic to the concerns of my community, but do me a favor and lay off the god damn name calling and petty remarks. It will get you nowhere.
    I must admit, respect points to Trendy for laying down the law like that.

    The entire Cardassian Arc needs an overhaul, even the FE; they will probably gut it like they did to Romulan Arc so it is more a part of the storyline. Hopefully something that give a better explanation for why the True Way exists and a less irritating storyline for the reemergence of the missing fleet (prequel replacing the loose Cardassian storyline and a better laid out FE). :o

    Lol I am the exact opposite. I find it extremely difficult to play the Federation unique missions. I find them so dull. I find for the Romulans and Klingon factions that the worst missions are the cross faction TRIBBLE but on the Federation side those missions are the best. Even the revamped early Federation missions are still boring and dull. Perhaps it's because i find it's very un-Starfleet and I feel more like a Terran Empire officer doing those missions shooting first and not asking questions later.

    My suggestion if you're having trouble with those missions, roll a Delta Romulan or Klingon, their missions are a lot better and they only have a small handful of the missions from the Cardasian struggle. ;)

    They are planning to revamp the Cardassian missions (probably in S11) but I don't think they'll do much with The 2800.

    Agreed. Plus why was it so hard to convince the Dominion that they had been stuck in the wormhole for thirty-years. How many times have we seen starships determine a time discrepancy almost instantly by checking stellar drift? Why couldn't they go back through the wormhole and talk to the current Dominion and get the skinny on what happened? Why did the Prophets let them out in the first place?

    Not really much of a fan of the whole Cardassian arc, either, and am also dreading redoing "Of Bajor" with my Delta Recruit.

    I plodded through them on 3 DR toons >.< Talk about painful. I found copious amounts of wine helped! lol

    Hasnt it been mentioned on a podcast somewhere that they are "remastering" (for want of a better term) the whole Cardassian arc?

    Pigheadedness. Note Euran knew of the issue on DS9 but insists on favours to even begin resolving them. The 2800 may have called home and the Dominion just laughed and let them keep going. The other means of telling time are all in the hands of your enemies that are all in about the positions you expected them to be and they have only gained advantages over your forces by chicanery. Would you trust your enemies clocks when they are telling you to surrender?

    As for the Prophets, they tell you why. They can't hold them forever. So they had to move them to a different section of time. Forward so as not to disturb the linear beings sense of past. So they dropped them off when there was enough of a force there that they could be handled and situations resolved.

    The 2800 is my favourite part of the Cardassian arc. It is pretty and gritty. I loved stealing some explosives with a "This will come in handy later." And when the lift reaches the command deck the dominion waiting to blast you face a lift full of armed grenades and you come in through an air duct out of the commander's office. Very sweet.
    The female changling was about as I expected of her. She was all ego and no rationality nor skill to her at all. Causing events to spiral further out of control just by being herself. So while annoying it fit her character.

    The rest of the cardassian arc though. . . One maybe ONE mission before the FE would suffice. But we have cardassians, Klingons and tribbles, mirror universe, pah wraiths, and they all seemed unsatisfying slogs. I look forward to seeing what the team does to polish this all up.

    I really hope they revamp the cardassian campaign soon. I've basically stopped progressing with my DR characters because I cannot stand that campaign.

    The fek'ihr and breen arcs are comparatively better, even if they too need a revamp.

    Both just drag however of different reasons.

    The Cardassian struggle feels like a conglomeration of way too similar and boring episodes which is way too long. You constantly feel you where runnning through the same corridors and rooms all the time.


    The mission "Of Bajor" is one of my personal top ten of the most boring and dull episodes ever.
    First because i just don't like Bajorans, their religious fuss and they are in general not very likeable to me. Where comes that pointless fear of being occupied from the federation. I mean ...what?
    Didn't those bumpkins realize that there's a huge Dominion fleet right at their doorsteps?
    Just stupid and annoying imo.

    The only thing i like is the "conversation" with the prophets. That one was really well done and felt like in the shows!

    The only thing I like about "of Bajor" is the map itself, and only because once I looked up while in the square near the temple and saw both moons rising. That was just beautiful. Its also nice to have a map that transitions to night and back again.

    Not to mention the fact that we lose control of DS9 three times. But no real coherent story up to the 2800. And I really hate the 2-part Undine themed one and the episode where Franklin Drake kidnaps us and puts us in the holosimulation.


    The 2800 is probably my least favorite of the old FEs. At this point I don't even bother with the side quests in the first episode -- I am not going to wheel and deal to get some holosuite time so the Deferi Ambassador can enjoy some "educational" programs. And I relish in pissing off all the delegates so nobody agrees to fight the Borg. Of Bajor always kinda irked me. It feels like they created this great art asset and needed something to do there. Facility 4028 is my favorite of the series by far -- the map is just awesome. I do like Boldly They Rode, mostly because it is different. But that could be a Stockholm Syndrome thing since I ran it a half dozen times in a row to get Dominion Polaron arrays.

    2800 is OK, but "Boldy We Rode".

    I just want to stuff Kurland out an airlock.

    Far as the rest, the mirror missions were not bad, rest of it, ugh...hate it.

    I love the map for the prison and the fact that you will see someone you put there. Thumbs up.

    But one invasion knocks out both computer cores which deactivates all the guard holograms and opened all the cell doors. . . Okaaay.
    Then the main computer can't come online to restore order till you have 100% order restored? Who designed this security system? The Pakleds?

    Oddly enough, "Of Bajor" doens't bother me. My list of tedious boring beyond boredom is going through...

    -Section 31's test
    -Fighting Undine in pointless disuises as Starfleet, Cardassian, and Jem'Hadar as they threaten the Alpha Quadrant. Half the time escorting slow moving officers and waiting as they have to "pick some stuff up".
    -Hunting down Klingons who are hunting down tribbles, I'm now skipping that episode entirely, lack of rewards be danmed

    If there is going to be a Cardassian arc revamp, I'd like to NOT see these again. If "Of Bajor" disappears too, I'm not that much of a fan of it anyway

    Funny enough, the only part of Boldly They Rode that irritates me is that stupid isolinear chip puzzle. I am horrible at those things. The 2800 I am OK with though I would like to see a dialogue pass at minimum to bring more sense to "Of Bajor."

    I don't want to see all of the Cardassian arc missions done away with. Some of them I enjoy--actually, I picked up a character from Seeds of Dissent to be a minor character in the Masterverse. (Orra Val...I showed him 3 years later, and how much he has grown both into his role as colonial prefect and into his trust of the Federation and CDF.) But some...I want to cut out. The one with Tom Riker's son...Cage of Fire...those would be on my chopping block. Same with the Mirror Universe mess.

    I think I actually convinced Loriss, once, that they were time shifted.

    After she acknowledged said time shift, as she was about to capitulate, she "withdrew" and started ranting that "since her gods gave her the order, peace treaty or not, time shift or not, she must complete the will of her gods until said gods tell her otherwise."

    And of course (no matter what happens) Loriss wasn't about to abandon the mission to check in with her gods, she was told to await their arrival and she wasn't going anywhere till they shown up.

    Hence the trip to 4028. To get that "God" to issue the countermand, at the extremely low price of freedom and a ticket to the GQ.

    The Prophets tell you, through their riddles in "of Bajor", that they had to allow the fleet to complete it's trip - as they essentially were tying up their resources (needed elsewhere, of course) in keeping the fleet time-trapped. The whole "a hand that is kept as a fist ceases to be a hand" bit...
    Detecting big-time "anti-old-school" bias here. NX? Lobi. TOS/TMP Connie? Super-promotion-box. (aka the two hardest ways to get ships) Excelsior & all 3 TNG "big hero" ships? C-Store. Please Equalize...

    Also, they said "we moved the fleet". Which suggests that they didn't hide it somewhere. They merely delayed it's arrival to Bajor in the first place.

    But yeah, Loriss isn't dumb. She knew something was wrong, but felt it was her duty to continue the attack anyways. Then the Founder told her to go home and she did.

    That's why I did my KDF DR first. Ironically, Cryptic's lac of attention on KDF work for Klingon this time, as this mean shorter cardissian struggle, and 10 less episodes than either Romulans and Fed.

    I have to agree here, the Cardassian story arc is lengthy and sub-par for quality, I was doing great with my Delta Recruit, hit the Cardassian arc and got a relapse of my 'burnout syndrome'. :(

    That was three weeks ago, I have yet to complete those missions. I should really get back to it, but every time I get back to my DR I look at the next mission and... log out and do something else.

    I'm hoping to get through it before the event ends.

    Suffice it to say, I'm unhappy with the Cardassian episodes and will be quite relieved when Cryptic finally gets around to updating them.

    (I believe I heard on a recent podcast, or livestream, that the Cardassian arc is on the to-do list to be updated, but keeps getting pushed back with more immediate issues.)

    I hope the revamped Cardassian Struggle takes as long to play through as the Delta Quadrant episodes did. I actually watched DS9. Since levels 50 to 60, I've just had some top heavy Earth woman in silver yoga pants telling me what to do, and I neither know nor care what her story is.

    And I agree the mirr 'Verse ones don't really need to be in there.

    Overall the Cardassian Struggle is the weakest part of the game, I think. Both gameplay-wise and storytelling wise.

    I can totally buy the True Way as a reactionary group wanting to return Cardassia back to its Golden Age of Military Conquest and all that... But working with Changlings and Jem'Hadar, the very group of people that unleashed hell on Cardassia in its last days before the end of the war? And then having so many ships when the home world is still struggling to recover from the war, needing Federation aid?

    The Undine arc is also weak story-wise, I think. Ultimately it just doesn't work - on the one hand, the Undine are believing that the Federation is invading its space, but on the other hand, they are taking over entire ships and high-ranking officials? The absence of any evidence of Starfleet sending ships in Fluidic Space should make them much more skeptical.
    And the Federation denies the threat of the Undine so it ends up entering a shooting war with the KDF - but you have direct evidence of Undine coup attempts on at least two major occassions?

    The Mirror stuff... I dislike the basic story idea that the Terran Empire could recover so quickly from almost a century of its non-existence.

    And gameplay-wise - all those same-looking corridors fighting through hordes of NPCs... ARGH.



    The Cardassian arc probably suffers from the fact that it was probably one of the last things they worked on before release. It was likely rushed.

    Unfortunately a lot of the weak story-telling aspects in STO seem to be unchangeable now...

    This is the reason why we need a Cardie-arc revamp as soon as humanly possible. To the story artists and writers: whatever you do, please don't rush it if you are doing it.
