If I want something, I should just be able to buy it or grind for it! This chance system is the ONE disappointing thing that makes me not want to spend real $$$ on a game that I otherwise enjoy...and have enjoyed for YEARS!!
Cryptic, I like you guys, but I HATE your business model! Was it forced on you by clueless corporate suits at CBS? I heard they won't allow you to directly sell certain items such as the hot ships, but rather will only allow you to chance them away. Well that sucks and I'm not putting up with it another cent more!
Buy keys to open lock boxes? Forget it! Not another cent! Promotions like the chance to earn the Sheshar Dreadnought? No more! Either sell it to me, make me grind for it, or you can KEEP it!
We vote with our dollars. My vote is cast!
"As with all living things, each according to his gifts."
These posts make me laugh. Its a gamble with lockboxes. You don't go spend your money at a casino and then go cry to the management when you lose it all. Grow up. You chose to gamble and lost. Not Cryptic's fault.
So you've been playing for at least 2 years and you're a lifer to boot but in all that time you haven't figured out how you can get keys without spending a single penny of your own money.
1. Buy keys off the exchange for EC.
2. Convert Dil to Zen.
3. Use your free monthly stipend.
Both 1 & 2 require grinding to get EC/Dil to get the keys.
Or save up your EC and buy the ship directly from the exchange.
#1 doesn't require grinding if you use $, which the OP seemed to be willing to do.
A lockbox ship typically costs around 100mil (give or take 50mil). A master key can be sold between 2mil and 2.5mil EC. So, 100mil/2mil = 50 master keys. If you buy in packs of 10, 5 packs would cost you 5625 Zen. This costs ~$50 (give or take)
So, the cost of a lockbox ship is approximately $50 (maybe up to $75, depends on a couple Exchange related factors).
Complain about that high cost if you're going to complain about something, not the random chance
And there I was hoping the OP was complaining about the random Mod chances from crafting/upgrading, because that pisses me off way more than Lockboxes.
Ok...my interest is piqued! Care to tell how that is done?
There are lots of ways. Recently I'm mostly selling crafting materials. Doffing is also reliable money. Crafting does work but I find it unreliable so I just sell the materials. If you want to go that route then padds are spectacular, or omni beams, or play the mod gamble and try to luck out with critdx3 antiproton's. Contraband farming is steady money.
I also buy a few of everything in each lockbox while the box is available and then sell it two lockboxes later when the prices have tripled.
It took me 3 weeks to grind enough dilithium to buy a bugship last august. I got tired of grinding and throwing the dilithium turned zen at the doff packs that gave a chance to get one. The lessons I learned was just get to work, and get it done safe.

I was Klingon before Klingon was cool.
1. Buy keys with zen
2. Sell keys on exchange for 2.x million EC each
3. Buy ship from exchange for EC.
Simple. You can optimize this by:
- buying Zen when it is on sale +15%, and buying in $50 - $100 chunks for the bonus zen.
- buying keys when 15% off like they are now
- selling keys when they are NOT on sale, so not now

You my friend explained the phrase "buy low, sell high" using this methode ensures no one is being taken advantage of so long as you keep your prices competative. Well done.

Why are you buying keys with Real money and not credits?
Usually you can win the most sought after items with keys bought with EC less than the amount you'd have to buy the ship outright with EC depending on the item. EC isn't hard to make.

Thanks!
I open lock boxes now and then, but only if I want something from them besides the ships, like the doffs and polaron weapons in the vaadwaur boxes, plus lobi crystals. I know that my odds of getting a ship are 1 in 200-250 so I'm not surprised when I don't get it.
I used EC (from playing and crafting in my case not keys) to get the Manasa escort. I did sell some keys earlier to get a Plasmonic Leech for a Fed, since only KDF and Rom-KDF can get one from the C-Store ship.
Wait for Cryptic/PWE to implement an ingame cash for real world money system. A certain mega MMO has already done so. Give it time. Although exchange prices will probably double or more.
I for one do not have an issue with the ships in lock boxes, because to be frank those ships, should not be available to players. Mainly because none of those ships belong to the playable factions. The only exceptions to that, that I am aware of was the Federation Temporal ship. The one thing I thing someone should be able to grind for, or do some missions for, is the Dilithium mining claims. This from what I understand is currently located in lock boxes only. Then again Dilithium is actually available now at a good clip. So it really does not bother me one way or the other.
Its funny the ope makes a threat Hate the chance system! Hat the day of the release of the new content.

Pretty much this right here.
Buy the keys.. sell the keys.. get what you want off the exchange.
It's better to spend $30-plus buck right off the bat and know you're going to get your ship.. than to gamble a lot more for a chance you might get it.
Another negative Rant thread from someone who REALLY does not know how to play the game.
Craft gear, TRIBBLE selling it in a trading channel, yer never gonna get anything because of the simple fact people KNOW how to be patient, and not BLOW 100 mil EC on a crtdx4 weapon.
TRIBBLE trying to get 120k DPS, unless yer in a dedicated PRE-MADE team.
You all need to learn how to play the game and ENJOY it, and stop coming to the forums whining about a working business model.
Anybody knows, when yer SELLING a product, as a buisness, you want to ATTRACT people to SPEND money.
It is NOT a cash grab. It is a BUISNESS. Either pay money to get ahead, or BE PATIENT knowing through time, you CAN be numero uno.
I was broke all the time, but after few months i managed to get myself few millions (i had 6 yay) only with selling loot (and 1mil from crafting). It takes time and patience like Tamujin said, but it pays off.
Really??? How long does it take YOU to grind for hundreds of millions of EC?
Well long, but in your OP you volunteered paying money. If you do that just spend it on keys and dont use em to open gambling boxes but rather sell em on the exchange and let other do that who dont have a problem with it.
If you are after a 70 mil lock box ship it roughly translates to 30 euro in that fashion. Not much more than a 3k ship from Zen Store.
Of course nobody holds u from playing smart. Monitoring exchange and going for sales in Zen store will help you a great deal.
If you dont want to spend the cash you can also grind dil besides ec and use it to buy zen. Almost all currencies are exchangeable.

I know full well my chances of winning anything, but I figured today I'd give it a crack, since I had some spare keys, some spare dilithium, and there's a key sale on...
6 boxes later I get the Xindi-Insectoid Carrier...
It's a game of chance, if you go in expecting to win something, not only are you a fool, but you're only guaranteed to walk away with a rant like the OP's...
Go in expecting to win nothing more than a handful of Lobi and you're (very) pleasantly suprised when you do win...
Listen, I've opened up over 200 boxes in my years here, no ship in any box
it's hella frustrating that not one has dropped for me. I've bought every lockbox ship I have, except one which was a xmas gift from another player, thanks brah.

Sorry man but you should take this as a lesson in gambling.

The bonus pools need to be removed from the game entirely or vastly improved in how much they give.
Dill mining claims are OK, but being bound is annoying, if they were sellable on the ah it'd be a huge improvement.
