I think the Expanded Universe was horrible either way. There was just too much bad writing and grasping for plots. Particularly all the "Wars" The New Republic had peace for what? Like five years over a century and a half? Even Medieval Europe did better. And don't get me started on the Vong, or the sandman emperor.

I think many others were thrilled when the canon rights of the EU were pulled.

Action's speak louder than words, and the fact that you keep reading and replying to my post prove you care what I say, regardless of whether you admit it or not. Now go ahead and reply again and prove me right :D

Aw, someone called me a name on the internet! Boohoo! About sig, I can see you weren't around in 2012, so I'll explain. This game launched in 2008, but there was a forum update thingy in 2012 that reset everyone's dates, which is why you will not see any year before 2012 as someone's join date. So my sig is my actual join date, and I will proudly keep it there, especially since you just admitted how much you love it :D

The game was announced in 2008 and people joined the forums and STO membership in 2008. I'm one of them. The reason STO is set in 2409 is because it was intended to release in 2009 but got set back.

Don't tell others to do research and then fail to do it yourself. It makes you look just as stupid.

I can personally tell you that Grandnagus has been around since at least 2009 - he's one of the games oldest players and one of the forum's oldest members.

And just to prove that, in fact, it is possible to have been a member prior to launch: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Trek_Online#Development
Cryptic Studios officially announced the development of Star Trek Online on July 28, 2008, as a countdown timer on Cryptic's web site reached zero and the new official site was launched.[68] A letter was sent out from Jack Emmert, the game's online producer, detailing some aspects of Cryptic's approach.

Now, back to the topic of the OP, canon does serve good purposes in an IP, but it is also a hindrance. It would have been impossible to create a new film that SW fans who didn't read the EU would understand unless it was set during events already covered by the EU - a factor which would have been too confining for the writers. In that vein, i think removing the EU from canon was a necessary move. That doesn't mean they can't use aspects from the EU, just that they don't have to. We may well see Admiral Thrawn some day.

It's like Star Trek Destiny. It's a novel I enjoy extensively, but it's not canon. With CBS recognising the Path to 2409 as canon, Destiny is not even soft canon. But I still enjoy it.

Nagus, may I make a suggestion? Stop responding to him. You're only going to get both of you reported to the mods and this thread locked. Since he's not even paying attention to my posts to him, I'm doing the same, and just ignoring him altogether.

On the contrary, I don't think it was a waste of time. It was just as entertaining as anything on TV for the past few hours. But thanks for the laughs, no hard feelings :D

I get what you mean, but as I said above I'm simply enjoying a funny conversation. I don't think any forum rules have been broken, aside from his use of personal insults, but that doesn't bother me.

What is your source for this? As far as I am aware, the only thing about STO's time period that is canon is what little we saw from Spock's mind meld in ST09.

This may have been retconned since, but when the game was announced, CBS had to authorise everything in the Path to 2409 as canon, along with everything in-game at launch, as canon.

That being said, it doesn't explain how a certain monstrosity of a T5 escort made it in-game.

To be fair, you cannot always judge the person as a whole based on one comment they make; that is why I said "attitude" in my previous post, not "person". People do not always have the same attitude all the time.

Do you have any source for this? Because as we have discussed, I have been here since beta, and never saw anything like that stated from anyone at Cryptic. What players say is pure conjecture so obviously doesn't count.

One point to clarify: CBS does have to *approve* what they do in this game, and it's storyline. But getting their *approval* does not mean it is canon. There is plenty of proof of that =P
