What race should I be?

So I want to make a new KDF character for Delta Recruitment, but I cant decide on the race. I already have a Klingon so I'd rather pick something different. I wanted a Gorn because I thought that I would be able to throw rocks at people like the NPCs but my hopes were ruined when I found out you cant do that :(

So looking for suggestions, what other races have useful/fun abilities? And yes, I know that when you create a character you can read all the traits it gets, but I noticed a few arent listed and also I dont know exactly how useful each one is. Sure it might sound nice, but is it really?

Personally, I like aliens the most. They're highly customizable and can be more powerful with the extra trait slot. In fact, my Delta Recruit is a Rom/KDF aligned alien named Thor, looks kind of like an Asgard and his ship is the O'neill.

Nausicaans have the pirate trait. Orions can be nearly nude. Letheans have efficent. Faresians excel at ground. And Klingons are pretty much vanilla.

    It's all about personal taste.

Leatheans have mind rapture.(can't remember it's correct name) and it's just so handy. They may be ugly but a lot of fun. I still hold out hopes that a re-career token will one day hit the c-store so I can turn him into a science officer.

For my Delta I rolled a Talaxian, just because I am a lifer and I can. Don't know if I'll keep him yet. I might delete him after hitting 50 and roll another species, liberated Borg or something.

But you have some solid choices to choose from. My tactical is an alien and I really want to turn him into a full Klingon or a Feresan, on point for me to buy the Feresan at this pint though. I want a re-species and re-career token more than anything.

I'm biased...Space that is...so it would be something like this for me:

    1) Joined Trill
    2) Nausicaan
    3) Talaxian
    4) Alien
    5) Klingon
    6) Orion
    7) Liberated Borg Klingon
    8) Gorn
    9) Lethean
    10) Ferasan

I rolled a Ferasan for my Delta Recruit to make sure that I wouldn't play it beyond what was needed to unlock the Delta Recruit stuff.

    I'm semi biased myself.

I rolled a female Orion for my KDF.
Lower threat + Ability to confuse an enemy into attacking his friends = fun for me. I'm also one of those people who choose not to run around in the obiglatory bikini all the time. I got the Mercenary outfit from the C-Store and mainly wear that. Doesn't mean I don't have an outfit like that to switch into if I wanna drool over a smexy Orion. :D

Anyways... ultimately it is up to you what you want to roll.

I have a Lethean SCI in the KDF. Rolled him as a mule and did not play him at all for a very long time. Got badly bored one day with the Blue Side and thought, "Why not?". The psi abilties, along with the rest of the the Science class Ground abilities makes him formidable on ground missions.

Took about eight or nine seconds for the Herald to stop and start backing away the other day when I finally got around to playing Uneasy Allies. Should have recorded it, I know. But I was having so much fun I forgot. Here is Mr. Junior Big Bad all puffed out and he turns out quickly to be just as much a proponent of discretion as Elite Tactical Drones, ha ha.

I also spent a great deal of time making the BOffs and DOffs Lethean as well for this char. Add in the Shard of Possibilities and the occasional Reman Strike Team, and you've got your self some first class mind bending entertainment.

As to what race should you be? I think the question you are really asking is, "What race is the best one for playing as a member of the KDF?" The answer is really easy, too.

Which one, right now, looks like it would be the most fun to play?

Best part is, if you choose one which is less than optimal, you can always hit Delete and try again. But all I can really tell you is this: If you are having fun while playing STO as a _____, then you have chosen correctly.

Space is the only thing that matters for most parts. That said, for KDF races that have access to race specific, meaningful space traits:

Joined Trill: Lots of nice little skill bonus all over the place

Alien: None specifically on their own but having the extra Trait slot

Talaxian: Bonus skillpoints and expertise for the team

Nausicaan: Pirate trait for all dmg bonus

Special Mention: Female Orions. Because. Female Orions. That is all.

Everything else in the KDF, just like the Feds, is too ground oriented in their traits and IMHO, worthless since most of this game's combat is space.

    Dishonorable Mentions:

"Efficient" space trait races: Letheans, Liberated Borg. Efficient used to be a highly desirable space trait. But that was years ago, long before even LOR came out. Cryptic nerfed the living **** out of this trait. The ONE space aspect that gave meaning to Liberated Borg and Letheans no longer had meaning.

Klingons having no aptitude, space traits.

If you got it go with Liberated borg they are awesome to play. Their space trait may not be as awesome as it used to be but come on they're fun.

Lib Borg are killer in ground combat. Their racial gives them a constant HP/shield regen effect that makes sustained combat much easier.

alright thanks for the suggestion everyone. I decided to go Orion because since I cant throw boulders at people, the next most fun ability is seduce. Getting enemies to attack each other is my favorite ability in many games. Im gonna try and get an entire team of Orions, all with the seduce ability :P

Seriously I love the Kazon's, I do think the Talaxian for the KDF should had been a Kazon species instead. That would have been awesome. Shame it never happened. Talaxian's don't make a lot of sense on the KDF side.

Hehe... have fun. Just be aware it is short range. But yea... I'm always like "Hey. You. Go attack your buddies for me" when I use the seduce ability on my Orion.

You can't throw rocks as a player gorn, but you can get a trait which gives you a pretty nasty bite attack. Plus grab the formal outfits from the C store and have him rocking a suit, it's pretty amazing. My Main KDF character is a gorn.

The last few characters I've made have been 'Aliens' because of what you can do with them. You can look up guides online for how to make canon races with the alien parts. I've made a Vorta, Jem'hadar and even an android.

i found that there are male only races in STO, but there is yet to be a female only race. i find this to be a bit sexist and sad. it is my hope that the devs read this, and think about what races they could make to become female or make them genderless. example is the Gorn i know they are a lizard like race that might be considered a unisex race. however if this is the case you could give them the intersex symbol rather then mark them as male with the male symbol. although i like this game a lot i find this slightly offensive. as a suggestion i would welcome the female only race. i am sure there are many female dominate races that exist in the world of star trek. also if you agree to this or if i have posted it in the wrong place could you send it to where it should be as i am not good with forms?

Normally I would agree with you, having gender-locked races is mildly sexist in my opinion, but in some cases like the Gorn there have only been male versions seen on-screen and even then only a couple of times (not sure about the animated series I can't bring myself to watch it lol), so the Devs have no basis for a female Gorn, so it's unlikely a sexism descision and more of a 'how would we do that???' thing..

Personally I feel that there should be male/female versions of all races, dispite the inconvienient fact that there would be an imbalance based on what players want to play as... (ie. has anyone seen a male orion player recently?)

More to the original question of this thread, most of my toons (all factions) are of the "Alien" race, I like the enhanced customization options in the tailor and the extra character trait comes in handy.:D (Yes you do lose the race specific abilities, but I like the versatility of being able to have the extra trait 'unlocked')

actually.... are we SURE the Gorn we saw on screen were male? :D

Oh and they were barely a cameo in TAS, so there's not much there.

well as i said they could have given the gorn or other male only races the intersex symbol rather then label them as male, i understand they dont have enough data to make a female version of some races, but thats also why i would welcome the idea of the female only race, it would eliminate the problem of the character creation being sexist, or at least make it lest sexist

I actually don't have any issue with your idea, I like to keep things balanced myself, though most games (I believe STO as well) are programmed with Male/Female in mind, I have yet to see a game that has Male/Female/Other/Multi/None as options, which would make more sense for a Star Trek game and a few other fantasy/sci-fi games too...

Labeling them as 'male' was probably a programming shortcut since we aren't even sure about Gorn genders (as was pointed out a few posts ago...;)).

To be clear, I still believe that until the gender options are clarified (if ever) to include 'Other/Multi/None', races should have options for either gender choice.

    The answer is always Gorn.

I can play a giant space lizard man? And I can unlock plate armor and a fur cloak for him to wear?

The choice seems obvious to me.

Always been a fan of Letheans.

True, Efficient is nowhere near as important as it used to be, but it's not a completely sterile trait either, and so at least you have it! That's more than you can say from the other choices.

There's also something absolutely wonderful about mind-rapturing an exploitable opponent into disintegration. I just turned you to dust with my BRAIN!

Then there's the fear factor. While some people refer to Letheans as "ugly," I think there's a big difference: Klingons look like Klingons (kinda ugly and awkward); Orions look pretty and have exaggerated features; Nausicaans are well and truly ugly, and the Gorn look downright cool. But Letheans? Combine their glowing beady red eyes, their penchant for being able to destroy you from inside your head, and that they have razor-sharp teeth ON their faces to let you know that they mean business? If a race comes close to "terrifying" on the KDF side, it's Lethean.

well as another idea, though idk how well it will work for the letheans or the nausicaans but for the gorns what they could do is simply have the females look like the males but with less upper body, still i like the idea of games that have the third gender or genderless because they are unisex, it makes a game tend to be more realistic...

Depends what kind of base animal stock a Gorn is based on. If the Gorn are based on crocodiles, you could simply go with males being larger and females being smaller but are otherwise identical. If they are different kinds of lizards, however, they could keep with the rough, sturdy look we have now for males and have different colours or skin patterns on females. There could be some really interesting options opened up taking this route.

i agree sadly though i am unsure if the devs will do this at all, still i would like to see the female versions of each of the male only races, or a female only race, i can even think of one off the top of my head, the people from the world of angel one, they were a female dominate race even if the feds left them to there "evolution" they could still have been made into the female only race, and i am sure there are a few others, so surly one of them could be made into the female only race to help balance out the character creation's sexism... maybe they could give them to the romulans as they only atm have three races to choose from
