Weekly maintenance is not enough. The game has been nearly unplayable for the last three days, and 100% unplayable today. I just spent 20 minutes merely logging in, then I thought maybe it was just the authentication/login servers, so I queued up for Crystalline... and spent the entire match with my ship twitching around like a poisoned housefly. Oddly, though, I could see health bars moving just fine. When the Entity exploded, I got an AFK penalty because I couldn't interact with it the entire time (either unable to move other than twitching, or weapons simply didn't work when apparently in range), and then when I left the map I was immediately disconnected.

I won't be trying to log in again tonight.

An increasingly-unstable game client is bad enough, but add mounting server issues to that and the windows of opportunity where this game is actually playable are getting smaller by the day.

You clearly don't understand how MMO servers operate, nor have sufficient understanding of Cryptic's server arrangements, if you even think this will make a difference...

Additionally, because you've been having problems, does not mean everyone has been having problems... STO's been running perfectly smooth for me all week, so what ever the issue is, it is not affecting the entire player base, in which case a daily 'reboot of the server' will not fix the problem...

It's entirely possible it could cause even more issues, not to mention complaints from people who are receiving a daily shutdown message... It could actually create the impression of server instability, for those people who have never had a problem, when they hear about a supposed need to reboot the servers daily...
The entitlement is strong in these forums...

Its possible that its the ISP that Cryptic uses for its servers. So its nothing you are doing yourself. Its just the middleman your computer and ISP and the game server are talking to so to speak.

Ok just a heads up. I don't know why Cryptic isn't more forward about this... Anyway, it's prepatch time. Patching bandwidth is deducted from server bandwidth. I really don't know why Cryptic doesn't use libtorrent for patching...
This same problem happened in NW when they launched the xbone version. Game was unplayable for weeks.
PWI is using torrent and runs very smoothly (and so do Censoredcraft and Wargaming)... erm help fellow Cryptic programmers out? Hello PWE?

So basically what I'm reading here is that for every 10 complaints, there's one person not affected and three others just saying that "server Lag is a fictitious unicorn from the land of Zandar..."

Based on that info, I probably wouldn't do anything either if I was cryptic.

It's not Just you it's quite a lot of people and it's been increasingly unstable since before Christmas. Having played for 5 years including closed beta this is probably the worst I've seen it since Beta. I'm sticking to logging in and doing my doff missions then that's it.

There have been a lot posts about this and a few people claiming they don't have problems (yeah right). It's affecting people from around the world including some in US/Canada. I very much doubt restarting the server on a daily basis will accomplish anything as I don't think it's a game engine issue, it seems more a hardware problem (Also based off the fact that Trendy has apparently been bugging the engineers into sorting it). But given that we don't know just how everything is arranged on Cryptics end I can't say for sure.

Also there's the issue with Cryptic having Neverwinter on the same server and having a massive patch lastweek.

Lets see what this weeks maintenance brings, we can only live in hope...

Might be helpful if both the folks having problems and not having problems were actually to get into more details about what they're having problems with and not having problems with...er...yeah.

I can run around doing whatever solo mission I want...no issue.
I can run around whatever social zones that I want...no issue.
I can hit up something like CCA with all sorts of spamming going on...no issue.
    Etc, etc, etc.
I can hit up an ISA...and...I've got around a 93.5% chance that I'm going to want to punch the wall next to my desk.

I don't hit up other queues, but if folks were to elaborate a bit more on their issues and non-issues...well...yeah.

See here is the thing, unlike you and i, cryptic won't be using a single ISP, they have multiple, they will be connected to all of the major carriers in that area, so one route having issues wouldn't affect any of the other players at all, its just how server management works for things like these sadly

Nah, what you're reading is the vocal minority, which is the same for the vast majority of games out there, people without issues wouldn't bother posting, so while to the untrained eye it might seem like most of the "players" are having issues, you will actually find that the number of affected players is quite a small percentage of the overall playerbase

To those saying this isn't anything to do with Cryptic, I believe you're mistaken.

If the bad connections were limited and only posted about once, by a handful of people, every other week, then yeah, maybe you could put it down to those people, but that isn't the case. Loads of people are noticing the bad server status, and there's loads of posts about it. I have a hard time believing that this is all individual people's connections.

I know people in my fleet who know their **** when it comes to this sort of thing, and even some of them are experiencing a stupid about of lag and rubber banding at times. To say it's all the people, and nothing to do with Cryptic, I find that pure arrogance. I would argue that [you people] are just lucky.

There are a ton of things that can cause lag like some folks have been reporting but the point is that only -some- people are getting it. If it was directly related to Cryptic's servers then -everybody- attempting to use those servers would be getting hit with it which is clearly not the case.

However, since lots of different people are getting hit with the lag, odds are good that it's not a simple, reproducable problem on their end.

That leaves an issue somewhere in the middle ground between the user's ISP, across however many backbone service providers they have between them and Cryptic's servers, and up to and including Cryptic's end ISP. There's a well-known feud between Cogent(?) and Comcast involving throttling of bandwidth which has caused issues in the past, for instance.

Cryptic knows that something is going on, Trendy's posted about it several times, so it's being looked into. However, if it isn't something that they can directly control, Cryptic may not be able fix it themselves.

I've been having lots of issues with lag (not so much with logouts) and hearing about it non-stop in-game.

The DPS channels have yet to be reset since the final decision after plasma doping got nerfed was to reset them about a week after the lag ends. And in the DPS channels people talk about the lag all the time. So maybe this is a starting point to figuring out the issue. Some possibilities:

-People doing good DPS are more likely to have lag because they activate more abilities and move around the maps faster

-Or maybe they have certain expensive traits or ships that are the issue

-ISA and CSA and a few other maps are the problem and DPS channels like these maps, although we had major lag in a run of ANRA last night and Korfez the other night (the timer for the second round of Benthans counted down at a rate of about 1 second every 10 seconds, and then when we finished that map we couldn't move on to the next but vaadwaur kept on spawning)

-People who are into the game just pay more attention so they notice the lag more. The lag is often things like boff abilities not going off unless you click them several times or weapons not firing if you use FAW, or weapons cycling becoming staggered as a couple weapons fire but not all of them. These are things that someone watching the ships and smashing the space bar won't notice.

Although I have started seeing lag complaints in other channels.

Related, what makes someone go into the several threads about lag each day on these forums and post "I don't have lag so no one does! Neener neener!"? Like, why aren't they just playing the game? And why do they want to say that others are not having a problem that many people are clearly having?

well for me it depends on what hours I try to play - there are phew 3-4 hours "brackets" during the day when I can't even to to my own ready room on my own bridge withouteternally bouncing off everything....

but outside of these "brackets" I have no issues at all....

well about server maintenance on daily basis - EvE onlie does 30minutes of server shutdown maintenance every day and their servers works just fine and no one is whining

so IF it could help with issue of connection stability I'd definitely go for it (assuming they'd pickup right time for that ofc :P)

I'm pretty sure it's either a hardware issue at their end or as was stated earlier the servers being stressed by NW's update. The reason I say this is because for me the lag is consistently only happening in certain instances. For example last night I was in the Defare invasion zone and the lag was horrible, I was rubber banding every ten steps and even Ui elements were taking ages to update. I then switched to another instance of the same zone which actually had a higher player count in it and the lag went away, i played there for ten minutes with no lag then switched back to test it and again lagged, switched again and no lag. If it was an internet based issue outside of the servers then all the instances would have been lagging for me, if it was my PC at fault again all the instances woul dhave been lagging for me.

hit the nail on the head (oh god the puns)

anyway what this guy said, bassically those of us who can only use a certain type of internet i.e Copper are getting screwed by the reduction of bandwidth on the game server because those people including myself already have slow download and upload speeds (which is not our fault as we dont control the phone lines which the internet uses nor do we have the power to update them to fibre without paying £3000 or more).

if true then that means a lot of people are suffering from it because there are a lot more people who still use copper compared to fibre so the server cant compensate for the stress through the users bandwidth and dl/up speeds because they are too slow which is why everythings rubber banding.

at least that's how i understand it.
(though im sure im probably going to get something along the lines of "you don't understand this because I am smarter blahblah".

anyway I hope cryptic gives an update on this I mean communication to the community and actually fixing it via moaning at Perfect world, its wishful thinking though.

I cant for the life of me understand how they are not using separate servers in 2015 other than the fact that they are lazy and don't care about their customers experiences just their wallets.

The place ive noticed for it to be the worst is the azura nebula rescue or w/e its called where you have to destroy the tholian ships and save the romulan ones.

For some strange reason that entire map seems to cascade with lag, no matter what you're doing it even freezes sometimes as your activating a single ability.

Its even worth when you're doing ground missions as well as its far more noticeable as their is a lot more animation even in solo instances.

I run sto on two different pc`s a desktop and laptop, the desktop is hardwired directly into my router, my laptop connects wirelessly at home and via mobile dongle to an alternative internet provider when I am away from home.

I cannot say I have experienced any major lag or other connection problems of late, in fact its been pretty good.
sure I might see the odd bit of lag on the very rare occasion but nothing to get in a snit about and certainly no more then I have seen on other high profile mmo`s.

maybe if you are having really bad lag or other connection problems you should be looking at your ISP or the hardware you are using or even your windows installation.
I found a piece of software called advanced system care that is free to use (although slightly limited) and will scan your pc for all sorts of things that could slow your internet connection and cause problems but there are many different software packages out there that do the same thing, maybe trying one of them might help.
also you should look at your antivirus software, I have known some AV software that causes your system or internet connection to grind to a virtual halt when performing the most basic of tasks.

I reside in the UK if that makes any difference and due to odd shift patterns play at any time between 7pm and 6.59pm so basically any hours of the day you could mention though not all on the same day obviously.

When I think about everything we've been through together,

maybe it's not the destination that matters, maybe it's the journey,

and if that journey takes a little longer,

so we can do something we all believe in,

I can't think of any place I'd rather be or any people I'd rather be with.

What you call "morning" is called "prime time" in another part of the world. Just saying.
For example, when it's 10am at Cryptic, it's 7pm in most Europe.

Not sure if European would enjoy that much.

Or whatever time frame that's not European/similar.
We already suffer 4 hours a week downtime, for which I did not pay life time patronage.
And yes, 4 hours a week in my case is a lot, since I am cripple, with a bad heart, and plenty of time to kill.
    STO is my relief here.

Restarting servers, unfortunately, won't fix a network issue -- and the really nasty lag and login issues a lot of people are having are clearly happening at the network level.

Restarts may fix a few smaller issues, but they'll cause others, and won't do anything to fix the big problems.

UPDATE: We are planning to conduct this maintenance at 8PM PDT (click here to view in your timezone) and expect it to last for 4 hours.

Also, there seems to be some speculation that Neverwinter, Champions and STO are on the same "server". While there are shared resources between the various Cryptic games, maintenance on one game does not necessarily mean that all games will undergo maintenance. Similarly, if one game goes down, it does not mean that all games will go down. All Cryptic games and services are affected for this is particular maintenance as we are performing work on network hardware in our data center.

    Cheers,

    Brandon =/\=

The Login/Authentication server is apparently shared across all games which is why you can chat with custom channels to friends in Champions and Neverwinter while playing STO. If that is the case any time we have a large influx of people logging in we will have major slowdowns like with the Delta Recruitment drive and Neverwinters recent expansion release.

There are likely other issues at play that we are not aware of.

When all else fails replicate more server hamsters for stand in training with water bottles of espresso standing by. I hear the Borg hamsters have quite a bit more endurance but kept trying to assimilate the server tech engineers.:P:D
