When this delta character thing starts i will make a new char but i dont know what class, i already have a tact and sci but dont give my sci much love mainly since all this grind got no time but i dont have an engineer, the class doesnt seem to have anythin that interests me, i was hoping you people could help me choose between sci and eng char and why engineer is worth going for even tho i have a tact in a cruiser
Do an eng. In space they may not be especially awesome at anything, but their heals are good on ships of otherwise limited eng stations (sci-scorts and carriers in particular). And on the ground, give them a few seconds to get dug in and they get mean.
For me I considering deleting my level 53 Fed tac toon for the Delta Recruitment event since I have devoted the least amount of time into that toon (about 3 weeks by now). However, that does not help you.
I have toons in all three factions and I play all three of the captain classes. The classes I enjoy playing actually depends on the faction. For Engineering and Science it is the Federation mostly because I like tanking and the number of available choices when it comes to starships. For Tactical it is by far the KDF, just strap me to a Bird of Prey and I will be immensely happy. Romulans... well they are fun but they do have power issues to deal with...
The Engineer is probably less relevant now after Delta Rising was released because of the DPS race. But an engineer can allow you to make it through missions without dying and that is what is important to me. Yes, STO is a game and you have unlimited lives, but I try to bring in a bit of realism into where people generally are not looking to die... with the exception of those suffering from suicidal tendencies. I don't want to wait for time to pass before I can get back into the game, then waste time flying to where I want to be. As an engineer my ship may not deal as much DPS as a tactical captain would, but my focus is not DPS. If you are into ground combat, then engineers are the best.
Science captains are fun to play because you need to think about something more than just DPS and since science ships tend to have the fewest number of tactical consoles, you more or less have to rely on your science abilities to get you through missions. Basically as a science captain you need to focus on exotic damage and debuffs to win. A science captain requires you to actually think about how you want to allocate captain skills and how to spec out your ship to get the most out of your captain. It is not rocket science, but it certainly a little more trickier to do compared to Engineer and Tactical. However, what you learn through playing a science toon can provide you with insight into how you can improve other captain classes or ships as well.
It's a bit of a toss up. Engineer... tank. Science... think.

Why not try out an Engineer in an Escort (or equivalent)? If you only have two characters then you probably haven't tried a second or third faction, which will also be a new experience.
Engineers can be quite powerful in ground combat with turrets and generators, and while you might miss Attack Pattern Alpha in space, you can boost your DPS by more easily maintaining high power levels. You should probably steer clear of science vessels though since they don't usually generate enough aggro to warrant the Engineer's supreme tanking skills.
Forget the possibility of PvP, for so much has become pay-to-win, never to be balanced. Forget the promise of exploration and research, for in the grim dark future of Star Trek Online there is only war. There is no peace amongst the stars, only an eternity of carnage and slaughter, and the laughter of thirsting publishers.

Honestly go with Sci.... because it's a challenge that most people can't handle without breaking down into tears and running back to their tacts.
Eng is nice... slow moving but safe and they can help with the all energy problems a lot of players face.
But sci/sci... if you can do that and make it work on your own you'll really learn the game systems inside and out knowing what works and doesn't work withou having to rely on the FAW crutch.
I know the above sounds snarky... but in a way it's true. Making a sci/sci work is a challenge that honestly most people don't want to bother with... but when you get it up there... it can take just about anything.

Engineers to particularly well in Destroyers as they tend to be a little more tanky than plain escorts, yet still have an escorts firepower, slightly slower and less maneuverable too. On top of that the destroyer mastery package is arguably the best set in the game.
I was thinking engineer for ground as the shield and turrets appeal to me but im tempted for sci and grav well build, i have a sci char for that but this one will be delta char so i get bonuses in general and i can give this char more attention, eng may be great at tanking but really i will just be in another cruiser where as sci you are more of a helper to your team

I will say this... a properly done Grav Well build takes ages to fully spin up and do properly... it comes in stages instead of the steady curve that many other classes get, but to get all the traits and gear necessary it'll be a while before you see true results.

That argument made sense about 2 years ago before we had a motherlode of career-independent passive & active resists and heals for shields and hull thrown at us.
For space.. you pretty much play tactical or go home. There's just no comparison.
For ground (does anyone actually play that?).. engineers. Tacticals are all but helpless on the ground, they get a bit of extra damage but can't keep themselves alive to ah.. save their lives?
I dont want another tact be pointless, this new character making event is silly tbh
One could think of it as grinding out something on a disposable toon to unlock things for the toon(s) you actually will play. Which in turn would lead to the question one might ask themselves what would be the fastest toon for them to level to do such...
Thats the main reason im doing it to unlock for my main char, you just dont get the time with work and grinding everything really to really get to play more than 1 char fully

This is kind of where I'm at right now with this event to be honest. Sure I'll level it up, probably get it all the way to 60, unlock the account wide trait... send the dilthium and EC I make back off to my main... and leave it sit, with the possibility that future "delta content" may come out.
But I'm not going to spend the metric ton of dilithium (and EC) I'd need to spend in order to make this character viable... nor waste the time to regrind out reputation marks and advanced marks.... nor gamble... again... on the RNC crafting system that may or may not allow me to make this character viable.
Basically if I can't twink it out using Bind to Account stuff I'm not using anymore or C-Store ships I've already purchased using the free zen I get from being a lifer... it ain't getting it... which means no traits... no specilizations and probably no decent gear.

Kinda why I am considering deleting my level 53 (basically got there by Doffing most of the way) tactical toon to do this event since I do not have any free captain slots. I have not devoted much time to this toon and I have not spent that many resources as well. Sure, I crafted some gear and used 1 superior tech each to upgrade them, but nothing turned ultra rare except for a single phaser relay. That means all the other crafted and upgraded gear that are still very rarer is disposable anyway.
Useful gear can be stored in my account bank until my new Fed tactical toon can use 'em. The accumulated EC and refined dilithium can be redistributed to my remaining toons.
Sure, I will loose progress if I delete and recreate this toon, but I'd rather do that than spend Zen to buy two more captain slots. I am glad I have not spent any Zen to expand Doff slots to 300 on this toon yet.

Pretty much same here going to play but definitly not going to play end game with him.
For me my main is an engineer. I love playing as one, for space miracle worker has saved me more times than i can count and on ground i LOVE orbital strike especially with the upgrade trait to make it a chasing beam(imho it really just needs to always be like that) I also have been playing a sci and while on ground im not too fond, in space i have an exotic damage build which is a lot of fun to grab everything on the map and blow it up. Crystalline is the best map to do it on.

According to the blog everyone should be getting a free captain slot with the event so no need to delete.
but I'd rather do that than spend Zen to buy two more captain slots.
Cryptic have announced that all accounts will get a free character slot when the event goes live, no need to have a spare one waiting unless you want to grind more than one delta recruit.
To be honest ladymyajha said it all to get the char viable you need to spend more time, dil and EC into it and if your one for the long run fair enough but with new content coming out and everyone has work etc i think its better to have a main char we can all be happy with, before this crafting and the additional grind more alts were viable but now its too much and end up neglecting chars which is a shame, i will treat this like any other event, play till i have the rewards then switch back
Also in deliberations about class choice for the delta recruit.
So far have tacs for roms, tac & new sci for kdf, and all sci fed. That's 5 Sci, 3 Tac. Found I was desperately missing a sci on KDF and so made one recently & flying the B'rel.
Along the way of gearing up the KDF tac I found new appreciation for that class as they can do quite some wizardry on the ground with group heals & group damage resistance, and the damage boosts are fun. Plus, it's a nice contrast to always having Sci abilities for a change. The call down security reminds me of sci's photonic fleet in space. Consumables for shield and health kind of make up for the lack of self healing even if you can't apply it to others, but you can still revive fallen allies.
I originally went for Tacs on rom & kdf because I read here that they can excel in Sci ships as exotic damage counts as kinetic and can be boosted by them. Not sure if this is true still, haven't parsed it to compare. The thalaron pulse apparently benefits from alpha strike and other things like max aux which is one confirmation of this.
Another reason for going Tac was most DR ships for those factions are escorts and light cruisers, and I never thought the dilithium would build much faster with more alts to be able to afford say a dyson sci for KDF (if T5 weren't being pathfindered) or a lobi sci ship.
All in all, I don't PVP, not in this current climate sadly, and so enjoy being a Sci primarily who flies all types of ships and has a ton of fun on the ground just the same. Tacticals have grown on me, at least on Rom and KDF, as they're really not the grunts I stereotyped that class to be in my experience. Tac abilities to me can mimic a lot of what Sci have to offer but in a different way, like a more delicate application of Sci abilities in a blend that's just quite elegant.
Engis, I have yet to read something more convincing as to why roll one, other than huddling alongside any Eng on the ground I see.
My main is a Sci... with 3 main-alts of two engineers and a sci. Of the other alts I have they also tend to be sci or engineer with I think only 1 tact.
So I'll probably do tactical and I'll probably do Romulan (since I only have one Romulan alt)... but I don't know if I can handle certain BOffs that I have to put up with again as a Romulan. Still I've done the Federation and Klingon stories to death... so unless they turn around and do a MASSIVE storyline overhaul for this event I have no idea what faction I'll go with.
Do a story I've practically memorized... or deal with that really annoying certain BOff.

Thanks.
I don't recall reading that in Monday's blog. I guess I should go back and re-read the event announcement.
To be honest i got a rom and klingon but not keen on them so im always fed, but as i said no matter what class we choose i think 99% of people will just get the trait and move on as really no time to grind everything you want like all he rep etc by time you get it to where your main is you will still be far behind

Been a very long time when you were on the ground
Tacs have little problems healing now, and doing crazy damage at the same time
your experience is very outdated
Jellico....Engineer ground.....Da'val Romulan space Sci
Saphire.. Science ground......Ko'el Romulan space Tac
Leva........Tactical ground.....Koj Romulan space Eng
JJ-Verse will never be Canon or considered Lore...It will always be JJ-Verse
If you dont have an engineer play one, especially on ground!
You have the potential to deal huge amounts of damage while being extremely tanky at the same time. This can be useful when running with DPS peeps in channels or with hopeless pugs alike.
It will also grand you a game experience quiet differently to the toons you already have.
Make sure to grab a chronotron mine barrier and a transphasic bomb!
Hope to see you in Nukara Transdimentional Tactics or Hive Ground one day. Of all the chars to pick my enemy neutralization engineer is my favourite to use when things get tough after beaming down.

This is true. I spend so little time on the ground I've never even equipped ground traits. I've done ground stf's a handful of times and prefer to avoid it if at all possible. The whole system has always felt clunky, unpolished, and generally tacked on at the last minute to me.
On a somewhat sarcastic side note.. if you're looking for a good class I can recommend Intro to Logic, Bioethics, and Geology of the Solar System. All are great classes. Astrobiology.. maybe. Just hope it's not taught by a physics TA. Sadly, my university didn't have any courses in Advanced Energy Weapons Training or Starship Command. A real failure on their part, that.

Much of it may actually be bound to account, so if you have an account bank, you can easily trade it to any other character.
I think only reptuation gear is by default bound-to-character. Crafted stuff is bound on equip to acount.
