Charles Gray, Lead Content Designer, recently said that adding new ship slots, even for purchase, is a difficult undertaking. OK. So, give us the ability to discharge anyship we own and reclaim it later. We can already reclaim C-store ships. We bought 'em and if we have to discharge them, we can reclaim them at a later date. Same with many consoles and other goodies.
This game encourages you, even PUSHES you, to acquire more and more ships. Open a lock box and get lucky? Tadaa! New ship! Participate in the seasonal event? Congrats! New ship. Play a spacial mission? Wow, new ship. Buy a few ship modules from Cryptic? Spend some Fleet Cred? Now you've got a Fleet ship.
While devs may not be willing to add new ship slots, the massive influx of ships needs to be addressed other than, "just get rid of the ones you've already earned or paid for".
Add ALL ships to the reclaim system. Done. No more slots but we can safely discharge our ships, then reclaim them later for play.
I, for one, rotate through ships almost weekly for the sheer variety of it. Now, with ship mastery, the game encourages you to level up multiple ships. It's time to get serious about addressing this.
Make them account openable as well. I'm not saying give all my characters the Recluse, just when I'd like to try it on another toon, let me move the ship there.
You turn in your lockbox/lobi ship and receive a token which is account bound, you place the token in your account bank, on one of your other characters you use the token to claim the lockbox/lobi ship. The token would be account bound to prevent selling/trading and if necessary could be ship specific i.e. trade in a Tal Shiar Adapted Destroyer and get a Tal Shiar Adapted Destroyer Claim Token or trade in a Temporal Science Vessel and get a Temporal Science Vessel Claim Token.
Ideally this process should be free, at least to begin with, Cryptic could then use their metrics to compare before and after data and IF there was a loss in revenues add an appropriate service charge (Zen, Dilithium or Lobi) to the system to compensate.
Why add a new system? The game already supports ship boxes, so keep those. When I discharge a ship, give me the option to "Discharge or Rebox." if I choose the latter, it appears in my storage, just like it did the first time I picked it up.

Just a thought.
I proposed that several times in different threads. Reaction from the players: stupid idea, we don't need this...
I think the largest problem is of course that it wouldn't sell ship slots. Which I feel is a primary motivator behind creating new ships and giving them to us rather than introducing systems or revamps that would allow us to alter how are own ships play.
That said I don't like be cynical.
These would be ships that would be mothballed. They would be removed from the ship switch feature.
I think that it should definitely be a feature for Lockbox ships though. Zen ships have this as a standard feature. Since Lobi is now account bound I think all Lobi ships should be account bound and claimable on all characters. Since lockboxes are the primary Lobi engine, and they are sold for real money they should fall under the same circumstances as the zen ships.

That would likely be the simplest method.

I agree that placing ships back in boxes wouldn't directly give money to Cryptic. Personally, I'd prefer to buy more ship slots. The problem is, the devs don't want to add ship slots because of data storage issues (ships and loadouts). I've already bought every extra ship slot available. So, ships continue to pour into the game but not slots to put them in.
This suggestion is a way of addressing the database issues while still allowing us to keep ships and not lose them permanently. Yes, mothballing them back into a box isn't as nice as buying more ship slots but it seems more doable for the devs.

New BOff system also make BOff slots less needed (one boff for all builds instead 2-3 boffs) yet it was implemented.
If you want option to fast change to other ships you still need ship slots to keep them in active duty.
Charles Gray, Lead Content Designer, recently said that adding new ship slots, even for purchase, is a difficult undertaking.
Sorry if this has already been asked, but why is it a difficult undertaking? You can buy them two at a time, I believe. I've done this once just to have a bit more access. I agree we should have an "Armada" screen or something to choose from at this point.
I'd like some way to rebox my lockbox or event ships.
Heck - I'd probably pay some nominal dil fee to be able to make a character-bound box for them.
I'm eventually going to run out of ship slots, and don't look forward to having to decide which event ships to let go to make room. I don't fly them often, but would still like a way to fly them (say at the next year's event).

Charles Gray said it is difficult because the database isn't just storing which ships you have anymore. It's also storing all the equipment you have on the ship as well as any loadouts. Basically, each slot is taking up more database space now. To me, this seems like a non-issue. We PAY for more ships slots, so theoretically, some of that income should go to paying for a larger database.
Still, I don't want to beat a dead horse. If he says adding slots is difficult, that probably translates to "it ain't gonna happen". The reason I'm taking this different approach, reclaiming all ships, is that it shouldn't add much to the database since equipment and loadouts won't be stored. The only thing the database would have to store is whether or not I earned or purchased a ship. It already does that with C-store ships, so it seems to me that there's no reason not to expand this in order to keep us buying ships!
It doesn't take long. Take part in a few events, buy a ship pack or two, win a few lock box ships and upgrade to some fleet ships and you're there. That's how I got here anyway!
The way we get ships has been changed over the years ... imho all it takes is for a token to be added to your account stats, and a box in the dilithium/reclaim shop for the vessel.
That seems to me the simplest version to do it ... with the least amount of "junk" in the databases about reboxing or transferring.
At least that should work for all the event ships.
Then there are some other oddities ... like needing to unpack the pleshk to unlock the frigate pets ... i like them as pets .. but the ship takes up a "useless" slot like this, and i cannot stash it away, coz then i would loose it (for a year). Same goes for the grett and other ships.
PLEASE let us reclaim the event ships via the promotions or reclaim tab of the stores.

Easy way to monetize it, put a dil cost on the rebox option. And put the option itself into the c store as an account unlock that requires all ship slots be purchased first. Boom, mo money for Greedtic, I mean Cryptic. Oops.

All true.
I'm all aboard on the repack ships for a dilithium fee suggestion.

During the Winter Event I ended up getting a second copy of all the Breen ships. Left the second boxed and opened the first copy as needed for Frigate unlocks, use, or console Reclaims. I could then dispose of the unpacked ship if needed. Works well with the account-wide discount; one Race and you have another ship copy.
What I don't like is having to maintain the Dyson Anniversary ship after having bought the C-Store versions just to maintain the Reclaim. And don't get me going about putting that ship into the Lobi Store for 600 Lobi, when all some people really wanted was the Secondary Deflector or Warp/Singularity core. Ridiculous given the account-wide unlocks available since then. If Alts that weren't 'born' at the time wanted to get the Secondary Deflector, let's say, having to pay that ridiculous Lobi price for the privilege is not in keeping with the current alt-friendliness added since the Summer Event.

I believe his point was simply that Cryptic doesn't always make changes based solely on whether or not we'll pay for something.
With the ship slot limit and so many new ships for T6 and various specialisations coming online, this needs to happen.
We come in peace, SHOOT TO KILL!
Agreed. I wouldn't mind having to reclaim them but I truly enjoy rotating through ships. Now, with the loadout system, Cryptic has made that easier.
I even recently ran through several missions and patrols using my light science vessel (the Grissom). It was fun doing Argala and kept me on my toes!
