I pretty much share the sentiment that I don't want to jump through hoops for something that's supposed to be a holiday/anniversary/whatever gift. It's not an enjoyable experience and it frankly just garners more negative feelings about the game.
I'm not even going to waste my time on it anyway, since it's, once again, another cruiser instead of something I might actually use. ie. escorts.
So our mission for the next 5 years ( bearing in mind the importance of 5 years )
is not a really a five-year mission: not to explore strange new worlds, not to seek out new life and new civilizations, not to boldly go where no-one has gone before, but to grind qmendations or grind ONE new mission.

is not a really a five-year mission: not to explore strange new worlds, not to seek out new life and new civilizations, not to boldly go where no-one has gone before, but to grind qmendations or grind ONE new mission.
Should be a doozy 5 years
Patience: The final frontier....
these are the voyages of the starship STO,
Its monotonous mission,
To explore strange new worlds of boredom,
To seek out monetisation and new wallets,
To boldly grind how no one has ground before.....
So far as this anniversary is concerned, it should PROBABLY be:
Space; the semi-final Frontier.
These are the grind-routines of the Zombieship Flying-grave
Its five-year mission: to explore the same old worlds, to resurrect old life and old civilizations, to boredly grind where everyone's ground before.
As a matter of fact, you are both right. The second anniversary gave players the first Odysseys and Bortases in the game.
However...
Last year's First Contact Day had the player temporarily command the Enterprise-F, Bortasqu', or Lleiset against Undine forces to obtain a Phoenix replica pet, tritanium rending Bat'leth, or Nanov pet.
Infinite possibilities have implications that could not be completely understood if you turned this entire universe into a giant supercomputer.
Oh, look, everybody, the noob's trying to look smart.
How about this. The anniversary ship used to be awarded for playing the mission attached to it one single time. The grinderversary was something they added just last year.
winter ships were always grinds.
Anniversary..... the first anniversary ship was the freebie Oddy. Which is not fleet, or even equal to a T5 from the Z-store.
Then they did the Ambassador... which is a good ship, if boring.
Star Trek Online mark a date of five years of live operations is a cause for celebration unlike any other year, and this anniversary we are pulling out all the stops!
Please explain to me the science behind how you imagined this would actually be plausible.
"Omega Traces come in the three different colours of the Omega nodes themselves. Using the R&D system you can combine 1 of each Trace into an Omega Sliver. You can them combine three Omega Slivers into an Omega Shard, and three Omega Shards into an Omega Fragment. Three Omega Fragments can then be combined into an Omega Upgrade Kit."
As this is what they are: "An Omega molecule was a highly unstable molecule believed to be the most powerful substance known to exist. With sufficient amounts of boronite the molecule could be synthesized. However, proper containment methods did not exist to prevent the violent destabilization of the molecule, which destroyed subspace and rendered warp travel impossible.
This is what the second best captain (Picard being the best one) had to say about it: "Omega destroys subspace, a chain reaction involving a handful of molecules could devastate subspace throughout an entire quadrant. If that were to happen, warp travel would become impossible. Spacefaring civilization as we know it would cease to exist." - Captain Janeway
So again. How are we supposed to take fragments of a molecule and turn them in to crystalline slivers and shards and then fragments?
so, is everyone ready for "particle collapsed. keep searching!"?
personally i'm more curious what kind of new party popper we'll get this year.
Now clowns, that's another story. They scare the crap out of me.
We fight them too. Entire armies spilling out of Volkswagens.
We do our best to fight them off, but they keep sending them in.

The grind takes over for the same reason that "deathmatch" went from an option to a genre to dominating the FPS market.
It's sooooo much cheaper and easier to design and write.
I'm not saying I could make a more story-heavy and varied game with the same budget, but if I *could* I would.
Also, for year 5 I would think the spirit of exploration would play more heavily, or maybe a TOS flashback, and I would prefer a more iconic ship (T5U TOS Dreadnought?) for the "5 year mission." But This one's cool, I guess.
I'm not mad like some people, I'm just observing that I'm highly invested in my characters and their stories, but less invested in the *game* as time goes on.
I would like a more story-heavy alternative, or even a more exploration-heavy grind (I kind of liked the old nebulae, though they were repetitive). I admit that's not easy to do in an MMO.
Ehh, I spend too much time playing games anyway.
P.S. I *might* grind for this ship, depending on how much "running" there is for each character... I already have a lot of Qmendations left over. Though Q seems to be horning in on a lot of events these days...
What would make a great start to year 5 of STO would be if Geko was fired for publicly bashing the players (CUSTOMERS, Geko. Players are CUSTOMERS!!!), and D'Angelo was fired for not firing Geko to begin with.
so, is everyone ready for "particle collapsed. keep searching!"?
personally i'm more curious what kind of new party popper we'll get this year.
I have mixed feelings. At first I was excited that they'd done away with the annoying 'find Q in the presents' mini game, but then they said I'd have to travel around the galaxy to different social zones and suddenly I felt no enthusiasm what so ever. I'm just glad I have 360 Qmendations on most of my characters left over from the last anniversary so I wont need to do the daily very much this year.
Join date is wrong, I've actually been around since STO Beta.

Cryptic found a way to make a terrible grind even worse, by a factor of X3!
I didn't even think that was possible; and tbh, my nose started bleeding just thinking about it....
[*]You will need to visit and stabilize a particle in each zone Q gives you (all three).
Wait a minute, are you saying that not only do I have HUNT for these things, but I have to traipse around the galaxy as well? I can't just stay at Starfleet Academy or the Klingon Academy? So it's a grind with a side of sheer boredom due to traveling? Something that would normally take maybe 2-3 minutes with the old (and generally hated by pretty much everyone) "shell game" is being replaced by something that will probably take 5 times longer. And this is called an improvement?
Unless there is an "auto travel to X location" involved, I think I'll just grab enough Qmendations for the first alt then probably just run the mission for my other alts to get the 40 Qmendations for the ship, since the MISSION may actually take less time than this Omega Particle hunt setup.
[*]Multiple people can interact with a partcle at a time.
[*]The particles are large, and glowy (of the color they represent).
These are good things, so perhaps I'm jumping to conclusions too quickly.
[*]Once someone starts to interact with a particle, it will remain clickable for other people for a short period of time, after that time it will move to another location.
Or maybe not. So if I have particularly bad timing, I could end up getting within sight of the particle but before I'm close enough to click on it, it disappears and I have to start hunting all over again? And this could happen with every single particle? *facepalm*
[*]If you have Q's mission, you will have a waypoint showing you where the two particles can be found.
Good.
(Not their exact locations though).
Bad.
[*]The particles are NOT found in level 50+ zones (so not Kobali city or Dyson spheres or any of that)
[*]The particles are found in space zones as well as ground. They might be "hidden" but the glow will likely give away their location.
And again, good.
Overall, it's bad enough we need to 'grind', but actually making us travel all over creation in order TO grind, is a bit much. I think I may end up wanting the shell game back if this is as horrid as it sounds. Guess we'll all see tomorrow.
Hello. My name is iamynaught and I am an altaholic.
The thing about the shell game although I personally liked it, is that it was not colorblind-friendly, and given that the game demographic skews male, that also means you are looking at a higher-than-average number of colorblind individuals playing the game. This was a design flaw that one of the devs (think it was Tacofangs?) publicly acknowledged last year. While a lot of other things in the game have gone severely unaddressed, it does seem that particular issue WAS taken into account by the devs, hence a game that sounds like it would not be so problematic to colorblind people.

still no bridge interaction, just a static crappy room/s
[this is disappointing as most of the action on star trek happens on the bridge of a ship]
space still feels 2 dimensional
[still have to fly like a "whirlpool" to get to enemies above you]
still not a real sand-box open universe game
[can not be in the same instance with a friend/s and still have "walls" at the end of a sector...]
naval reference in star trek being ignored
[instead of Port shields failing, i hear Left shields failing]
still waiting on the engine which generates new worlds/systems to explore etc
in the end, for me, the game feels like playing single player first person shooter with ship skins on the players. there is no real challenge, there is nothing star trek about this game expect for the name star trek and the early tiers ships.
i always dreamed of a star trek mmorpg similar to star trek bridge commander but i guess that dream died with Perpetual Entertainment...
They got Kim in! Shes a great actress. Liked her in Voyager and Supernatural.
I'm pretty jazzed by this too. Very glad to see another trek actor appear, gives me hope for some of the others, especially if they do anything ds9 related.
If you have Q's mission, you will have a waypoint showing you where the two particles can be found.
that IF really has me wondering. are they excluding the kdf or something ? or is it just a once a day thing you get the mission thing after that your on your own?
really is sad i have to ask but with the treatment of KDF it really is a valid question.
Trophies for killing FEDS ahh those were the days.

It's just because Q's mission is a daily, it will reward the 40 Qmendations, but you can still find and scan the things without the daily active.

Here's to STO's 5th anniversary offering much congratulations & much appreciation for all you complete for us players (the massive good & the little bad).
We all should've been expecting complications with this patch & event coinciding together & the massive changes anyways.
Out of the three locations I was given (ESD, Vulcan, K-7), I only managed to get ONE (out of 7 omegas I found) to count. And oddly, it didn't even let me have the full time, got about 10s before it ended it.
I wonder if its due to server overload... the rubberbanding was pretty bad on ESD.
I'd like to point out to whoever had the idea of allowing other players to mess up the omega scanning by attempting to start scanning the same one, should get a slap off the head dev.
come on guys you've done better than this over the last 5 years, how about making an event that draws out those who haven't played for god knows how long and designing it so they don't mess it up for others who play regularly. i've tried 23 scans on vulcan in 7 instances and not had any one of them count due to other players messing it up for everyone else by trying to scan at the same time.
please sort it out so that when one person starts to scan no one else gets the option to until the first person has finished or until it respawns, you know, kind of how the Academy particle traces used to be.
The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.
