that's a mouthful, but it might be easier to say "Without Exploration, what's the point of being an explorer?" Starfleet are supposed to be Explorers.
My KDF chars will entertain the idea of conquering freshly explored worlds & even startfleets finest nitpicks if a current build lacks some stuff https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4HG_Hx-0ulQ
But to be less silly: I like building my ships/crew to get a certain vision of what they supposed to be done. Using them then in content & playstyles I prefer (i.e. not PvP) is a plus and makes me log in (or not). My post was just a mocking twist on the OPs "Its PvP or u suck" appearing headline of the topic.
This thread is mainly about Forum PvP... the topic at hand is just an excuse to banter.

Interesting and very valid point made by the author.
I too have been struggling with this question recently. What is the point of it all?
If players honestly believe that the soul purpose of all this is so they can be "more competitive" against lackluster NPCs that are programmed to do the same thing over, and over again - then I truly shudder at the evolution of man. Not to mention, they doing it in 3-4 missions for thousands of times. Thrilling.

If we go through life without asking this question (to ourselves or in public), we scarcely deserve to be called human.
I thank you for sharing this part of your humanity with the rest of the STO forums, and while I do not have an answer for you... I am sure there are several books out there (not that I endorse any particular one) that can perhaps enlighten you.
There are also several films that address this exact question, each with various answers of extreme diversity. If you have a Netflix account, I am sure you could easily find a few on there.

Netflix, Cockneys vs. Zombies, the walker scene...
Ship building is just part of the fun of the game, to try out new things in a familiar environment, some of my favourite builds are not the best in terms of damage but are a lot of fun to play.
If the FUN stops, STOP.
The strangest thing for me, regarding STO...is just how much fun it is as long as I stay away from the forums - as long as I don't run any public PvE queues. Sure, I miss the PvP stuff - but as long as I avoid the forums and public PvE queues; it's kind of a trip just how much fun I can have in STO. Hrmmm...
Please I have been asking this for a few years now and the only answer i get is "so you can do stf's faster the next time"
Is that the reason to buy a ship and gear it up? because there is nothing after 60 except spec point grinding and why grind spec points? so I can do stf's even faster?
Sad state of affairs
It's about role playing. tweaking ships/builds for specific tasks.
If you only focus on pure DPS and PVP builds then you barely scratch the surface of what is possible.
I have some builds geared for PVP. Some snooper builds, some vapers, some healers.
Beside that i make build my ships and ground gear on a theme.
Tholian Orb weaver with Nukara gear, breen raider with breen space set etc. As others have commented PVP, while pretending to be less predictable game play, is boring (when was the last time you actually had a balanced match in PVP) and the whole atmosphere surrounding it is toxic.
Nowadays, the only "PVP" i do is in Kerrat.
So to answer your question, what is the point of ship building? Role Play and casual PVP.
If you find that insufficient then that is YOUR problem.
This program, though reasonably normal at times, seems to have a strong affinity to classes belonging to the Cat 2.0 program. Questerius 2.7 will break down on occasion, resulting in garbage and nonsense messages whenever it occurs. Usually a hard reboot or pulling the plug solves the problem when that happens.
The only thing more sad than the OP posting this troll thread is that people fed him for 14 pages already.
Don't like the PvP here? There's plenty of f2p PvP oriented games out there, go forth and explore strange new worlds. If you've been whining and bashing your head on a comment/promise made 5yrs ago by Cryptic and they haven't lived up to it... perhaps it's time to stop beating that wall with your cranium, use your brain, and go try something else. I do realize you likely are incapable of thinking if you've been doing the same whine for 5yrs tho.

5 years ago what are you talking about? they have made promise as recently as last month! They keep saying oh it's on the list so it's not like how you put it because they keep stringing us along if anything you can give me hell for actually believing what they say stupid of me but they need to stop giving people hope
they say they are going to do something and you whine to me about me wanting them to follow though?
xDDDD this thread is so hilarious!!! u really believe what u typed there, do ya? tell me, how high can mountains get to sail on em?
and nope, i won't tell u what i'm talking about. because obviously u would turn it into a much more nasty thing negating everything i may could say ....

Considering I was there on the forums reading it as it went down... yes, I believe what I wrote there. But you go ahead and continue to think I'm blowing smoke, as long as it makes you happy and secure in your personal glass castle.

sure... and it's impossible others have been there as well. of course ... good day sir ...
I would rather Cryptic keep 5 years of promises or just tell us straight up there will be no further development
Yeah, well I'd rather them not introduce the Bug ship .
I guess it's a little late for that now ... , but it was a good enough (or big enough) of a warning sign for me to fold on PVP as a semi-regular activity .
... guess I was ahead of the curve in that respect in seeing the things to come ...

Your belief is quite wrong if you thought some bad posts somewhere made Cryptic stop developing for PVP.
Here's the truth:
Other than altering faction-based Queues, Cryptic has literally done nothing for PVP. If, for example, an STO PVP'er left when the game was less than 1 year old, and came back now, he would find the same maps, the same Kerrat, the same modes of play as 2010. The only thing that has changed is the nuking of faction-based queues in favor of non-faction based PVP queues.
That is the full extent of Cryptic's effort towards improving PVP in the 5 years of this game being Live.
So some angry posters supposedly made Cryptic stop development for improving PVP? LOL, try this... They never did any real improvement for PVP to begin with for the entirety of this game's existence. No amount of angry posting nor nicely worded, thought out posts has changed that nor ever will change it.
Well, based on my personal experience you're not talking about Blizzard, so now I'm curious which MMO maker you ARE talking about....
What's wrong with their system? Atleast they have developed a decent PvP system where instances are concerned. The oPvP is tripe and very few do it other than to gank, even in areas specifically designed for it.
CCP, for a developer with a good PvP/PvE game. The learning curve is a pain, but it is quite a good system. Get in a good corp and war can break out if you get attacked by someone and then it gets interesting.

Well, in Diablo 2, they had to implement a system where players did 1/2 as much damage to other players as to monsters, and 1/3 damage to pets of other players. Why? because pretty much all player characters are glass cannons compared to monsters.
I've never played D3 or WoW, but from what I've heard in their pvp either you build for pvp or you lose in pvp.

And how many more years you gonna believe the bs when they spew it? If they've been sayin the same thing over and over and over and not delivering, you're more the fool for still believing it. In case you haven't noticed a LOT of things are stated as 'on the list' and never see the light of day or it takes them years to bubble to the top. Clue in, stop believing the bs, go find yourself a PvP mmo. Nosgoth just went into open beta, thats nothing but team based PvP, buh bye.

Uh, so whats your point? This is commonly done because PvE and PvP are different. Just because Cryptic refuses to acknowledge this doesn't make it true.
In Rift there is a 85% reduction in damage/healing during PvP. PvP there is pretty fun for people that just walk into it, the real problem is pre-mades who queue up to wipe the floor with random groups, that stuff needs to be killed.

Why cryptic is incapable of doing that as well is anyone's guess.
