Back in the day is was Escorts Online, you either flew an escort or you didn't have enough damage to do well. Cruiser Comm Arrays with Cruiser Commands were to elp bring up cruisers up to par with the powerful escorts and same for the very late Secondary Deflectors on Sci ships. Also same reason they gave raiders flanking as well. So basically in the end you would be able to do well with any ship besides the escort.
Now things have balanced out a lot, though Sci was lagging due to their missing Secondary Deflector to bring them up to par.
Escorts and Cruisers need a corresponding shiny new item slot for something as well, like for Escorts, we could get those Rear Firing Cannons from the Tempest.
For the Cruisers pick something similar currently only available on a few ships.
Or if we have to be role specific:
A Secondary Impulse Engine slot for Escorts.
A Secondary Shield slot for Cruisers.
I seem to recall that around the time of LoR, there was talk of (1) transforming ship armor from an engineering console into its own category of gear, and (2) giving cruisers two Armor slots as opposed to just one for escorts and sci vessels.
Obviously that was never done, but as far as I know it was never permanently rejected either, so I wonder if they might not consider something like this in the future.
There are exactly zero Escorts with flanking, and IMO it should stay that way.
Didn't the Fed Aquarius get the raider flanking added to it not so long ago? Could have sworn that happened pre-DR, hence why you would not remember since the OPness of DR being the best expansion ever and so on would have made you forget anything that happened before it's release....
Q: Will my existing science ship automatically receive a Secondary Deflector?
A: No. However, any newly claimed Science ships will receive a Secondary Deflector. Alternatively, you can purchase a common Secondary Deflector from any energy credit starship equipment vendor.
Wow thats not cool what about the ships that we have already means we have to spend EC on each one to get that slot and IIRC the dauntless class vessel does not have one so it means I have to spend EC on a ship that I spent quite a bit on to get a secondary slot very uncool.
Also will the Inhibitive secondary deflector affect the borg tractor beam at all. I don't think it will but my decision on which deflector I will get
Out of all the things that is wrong with this game, you choose to be upset with this.
A white COMMON secondary deflector that most if not all players trash once they get their ship.
Thats around 13-14k ec, from a vender, you can get most of that back by just selling one deflector that you get from a loot drop.
So in the end if you were to only get one deflector loot drop and sell that at a space station youll get like 11-12k ec. So youll only be out roughly 1.5k ec.
If only everything else in this game was that easy to grind for, we would all be happy.
-Lets see, how much to pay my way to the next level.
> Well thatll be 1.5k ec please.
- Sure, give me a few minutes and Ill be right back.

I'd been wondering when these things would be introduced. I'm guessing that once these things get rolling for a few months, we're gonna see some come out in Rep stuff with crazy abilities. One question though, as I haven't seen this info yet: When exactly will the Sec Def patch be released?
It isn't mentioned but will the ship look different? Cos I have a Nebula class - Advanced Research Vessel Retrofit (Tier 5), by default it only has the one deflector, will a secondary one appear visually once I get the slot and mod?
It does have a secondary deflector. It's on top, it's that dishy flat structure on top of the pylon on the rear of the ship.
It would be nice if they had unique visualizations too like the other deflectors do, but I'm just glad to be finally gettin em.
Bah, I'll be using the DSD's defector on my Voth Palisade drain build. Nothing more satisfying than draining a target's shields while healing yours at the same time.
I'm disappointed that other Sci mechanics, such as disables and drains, were not given power appropriate deflectors. I'd like to see other deflectors other than burst damage, DoT damage, and healing deflectors.
Thanks for the Secondary Deflector work so far Cryptic.
now that we know that sci is getting secondary deflectors I would love to see tac and eng get them too, I'm quite sure there are some good ueses for them as well.

The cruisers and escorts weren't made to have secondary deflectors equipped though. I would, however, like them to get something comparable to help their abilities, too.
Here's the list down in the tribble section about which ships get the 2nd deflector. (As noted in the blog it looks like every ship but the Oberth class starter ship).
The Roms and KDF don't have a lot of choices for pure science vessels at the moment, hopefully that will change
Secondary Deflectors
There are three base types of Secondary Deflectors:
so yes it took them a year to finaly give us these and i know its not gona be a huge buff but its better then nothing cant wait for my inhibitin (-deg) (+heal) (+damage)
as a side note ill be selling junk ones on the exchange for cost to build them based on mats and dil may science rejouce the day!
They WILL be getting the Secondary Deflector Array.
That's kind of the point jrq wanted to make. The secondary deflectors are a belated gift to keep the Scis par with the cruiser siblings. Now asking for a new gift for cruisers because the Scis are getting one would be counterproductive. Similar to how you should be able to explain to siblings that they do not get presents on their brothers' or sisters' birthdays but on their own.
I still have the feeling that the escorts will still rule supreme in general, and since most of the ships seem to be tac focused, there will be an outcry if the other two ever were given abilities to draw level.
My mother was an epohh and my father smelled of tulaberries
I enjoy playing science roles, in science ships, so this is a very nice addition. I genuinely like that healing was considered with the options of the secondary deflectors. I enjoy healing in MMOs, but this game cripples peer to peer support in combat with the need for self defense, self preservation. This option will help.
As for escorts/cruisers vs science: does having more weapon slots not count? I mean, your abilies (FAW, RF, etc) add to your weapons... so does that not make sense to anyone but me?
Science just seems to be doing this in reverse, which I'm perfectly fine with. Happy with.
Additionally, I don't really enjoy playing escorts or cruisers in this game, so I might be totally wrong. Sorry if that's the case.

Yah, that logic works well with siblings, not.
If the Cruisers are set with their new Command Powers, what do Escorts get?
(Besides "being the best already" which is a quite lame excuse to prevent them from getting something nice as well.)
And if Escorts are the current Cat's meow, then Cryptic should cater to that part of the client base. I know they aren't the sharpest tacks when it comes to good business sense, but they do tend to take advice from these forums......

Eh, did you not see the free DSD's 2nd deflector? Great drain one.
Okay, so first Delta Rising comes out, we have to either buy a Tier VI Starship or pay out of pocket to upgrade one. Now we have Secondary Deflectors come out? I hope this is just for specific class of ships, and not another bloody ****ing upgrade out of pocket just so Perfectworld can make some money here. The more you adapt the more you still have to climb.
There are exactly zero Escorts with flanking, and IMO it should stay that way.
Actually Orange if you KNOW your escorts well the Raider Class on the KDF side get "Bonus" on flanking and also upon decloaking as well with Crits as well. Wait at your rank you "should" have known that. OMG BRILLIANT ORANGE!
Inhibiting Secondary Deflector only ones worth getting since this game is DPS DPS DPS
My pathfinder with deteriorating deflector combined with Energy siphon and Tyken Rift proves you wrong.
The extra radiation damage is incredible. Having said that, after every update i check if i can upgrade the common secondary deflector i currently use. While good i will upgrade it when the opportunity presents itself.
This program, though reasonably normal at times, seems to have a strong affinity to classes belonging to the Cat 2.0 program. Questerius 2.7 will break down on occasion, resulting in garbage and nonsense messages whenever it occurs. Usually a hard reboot or pulling the plug solves the problem when that happens.

I'm tinkering around with upgrading deflectors on tribble and would suggest upgrading Mark 1, 3(?), or 5's over Mark 10's. Mark 5 (? or 3) seems to be cheaper to upgrade than Mark 1.

Haven't gotten around to visiting tribble yet. Are we going to get the possibility to craft secondary deflectors?

Probably with the next anniversary which is due to arrive in 2-3 weeks. Starting date has shifted a bit the last few years so it's hard to give an exact date.
Testing is taking place on tribble as we speak, er type.

One of the reasons to keep the Intelligence Specialization is it's Flanking powers.
Hmmm, Can't find this "Comm Array" on a STO google search.
I have a few cruisers, is it a separate item slot like Secondary deflectors?
If so I can't find it?
Are you talking about Command Powers?
