Why don't we have a choice with the new BOFF icons?

Heh, do a Google Image Search for Wolverine claws...and well...which were pretty much the Hero Claws back in City of Heroes.

So yeah, it's going to get into backgrounds and familiarity. I've played far more Fantasy or Superhero games than I have Sci-Fi or Military games. So I'm seeing claws and fireballs...

Fair point. Again, I didn't mean to offend; just to point out a different perspective based on a different background.

I do agree with the post above yours that the UI should be steamlined to allow for Icon swapping, among other things; such as to also reduce lag from the UI constantly refreshing when looking at the Reputation tab, or the other dialogue boxes delaying others (when Red Alert is active on New Romulus ground, it notably delays the Tag Epohh dialogue box by a half-second after each tag, even if the Epohhs are next to each other).

In the long run, streamlining the UI would also allow them to be a little more creative with it without it suddenly slowing things down.

I really don't care what they look like..as long as they do what they are suppose to do. What I don't understand is the..."its not broken..but lets fix it anyway" attitude STO is taking here. Oh..and lets not forget that we're going to have to spend MORE dilithium when we craft these so called manuals. I have spent good money on buying doffs with powers such as Beam Overload III...you know how much a Romulan Boff with the Trait Superior Romulan Operative along with Beam Overload III costs? I hear that we won't even be able to keep our bridge officer candidates..or be reimbursed for the money we spent on them. Pure Horse#^%$# if you ask me. I agree with the posts earlier..we should have a choice..we all are not playing for free..but it doesn't matter..free or not..choice in what goes on..at least part of the time would satisfy a bunch of us. I don't like the new BOFF idea..its a waste of time and work especially because the way we can do it now works just fine.

Well its the same principle as why just about every innovation in human society has taken the same approach. This isn't anwhere on the scale of, say, the act of human industrialization but "not being broken" is no justification for maintaining a system, device, or even just an attitude. It could ALWAYS be better (and here the devs have found themselves able to treat this part of STO with that philosophy).

If you need a stock phrase to remember that by, remember that nothing is perfect (even abstract symbols in a video game.)

I like the new icons, even some of the captain icons are neat.. aka Ramming Speed.. and some others.

Even though it looks like a Constitution is ramming a trololol big starship, like a Doomsday Machine.. I had to do that. >.<

    The old icons won't be missed much when everyone gets used to the newer ones but they are slightly too bright when I actually play the Tribble Test Server.. >.<;

Guess My eye sight sucks TRIBBLE.. lol

Also I have to say, also that this is a big improvement over sticking with the old ones for another 5 years.. lol

I can't wait til the Anniversary Event if all this things comes out without delay.

I like the new icons. I design them in my spare time anyway and the new ones fix up issues with the old ones nicely IMO. New players will get the information a lot easier as they actually make sense now.

The bad part is there is still two styles in use. One with a boff outline and one without. Remove that outline and just have the icon. It gives more space for the icon and makes each one less fussy.

Not all the new ones are as I would have designed them, but they are certainly better than the originals.

Changing the color of the UI is still using the same images, just changing what color is being applied to those images.

If we had all of the old icons, and all of the new icons, that's twice the texture memory, and would likely slow down the UI even more than it is now.

As such, the icons have simply been replaced. I know it's new, and different, but give them a chance. You might just find some of them easier to understand than the old ones.

You say it like WE have a choice...

I'm okay with new icons, and they look all well and good and artistically sound... But was this an issue? I've never once heard anyone complain about the icons. Why was this a priority?

What a waste of time, doff "revamp" vol. 2.

Someone in the office has to justifying hirering his nephew by creating icons in paint?

Because it times with all the fancy new icons coming with Specializations. Can't let people start complaining that the Specialized icons are fancier than the old ones.

More seriously, it also coincides with them updating their icon design standard (they had a post discussing what goes into designing an icon, and what templates they use). It actually makes a fair bit of sense that they would bring the old standard up to the new one so that future icons for Specializations or abilities could be drawn from the same core set of templates.

It's only too bad it wasn't timed with an actual UI overhaul to reduce lag and improve quality though. They could have even updated it to allow for some fancier features, such as transparent UI elements (except map/radar, ability bars, and Boff/Hangar boxes) when in combat (sort of like the chat box), or even a newer and more organized UI set, with the option to choose between 2 or more styles (old (current UI look) and new (theoretical future UI look)).
