Especially since all my fleetmates would just shrug and say "no worries, I guess I'll just ignore that specialization" and keep on as if nothing changed. So, no one I care about would be upset and I could just enjoy the spectacle from the sidelines.
But, it really would not be good for the game as amusing as it would be.
Edit:FYI, if it wasn't clear, I really did find your post both funny and accurate, that wasn't a sarcastic "haha".
Yup pretty similar. Some people embraced it (me for example, I like the rep system), some did the minimal to get the gear they wanted, and some... Well we have one guy who still hasn't decided if he wants to try the "new" rep system. This means he hasn't touched it since marks/projects were added replacing the old random loot system more than two years ago when omega was the only one.
There's no wrong way to play, unless you're not having fun.
Fun is a matter of personal taste. Fact. I would never want a recreation that is no fun. Who would?
STO has a variety of content types, my big beef is that Cryptic has pigeon toed xp(specialization)to patrol grinding. I think it is because they want to reduce Dil coming into the game. That is just my opinion.
The consequences are blatantly obvious. I can run Elite Ground Missions all night long, queue after queue, and hardly a hair width of xp is the net result of it. I can run PvP matches until my hands can't take it anymore and not get a dime's worth of xp for it. This TRIBBLE is killing the general queues. Having to find channels to get missions and matches is just bad business.
My fleet has been around a very long time. Were die hard trek/game nerds, no sugar coating about it. We use to have PvE nights, Klingon Fleet nights, and pre-made pvp where we went into the queues hoping to put up a good fight against far superior teams.
I feel like my fleet is dying. Alts that needed this or that are parked and collecting dust, or in my case deleted. If it feels like work then something is wrong.

well, patrols are one source, but not the only one. All off my altsmi used for the winter event got 1 or 2 levels from the race and doffing for ornaments.

Those aren't "obvious" consequences, those are your decisions. Here's a question for you: why do you want the exp? So you can do the same content that just earned you the exp over again, but faster? If you're a completionist who has to have everything, then ya, the game sucks currently. Otherwise, just don't grind. You have that choice.
If its just getting to 60 that's your goal, well grinding patrols is one choice. But I've been playing missions, doing a bit in the battle zones, some foundry, lotta doffing, etc. None of my characters have rerun any patrol except as a way to get the daily bonus marks quickly, and I've got two 60s and two 57s only one of which has done more than two delta rising missions.
It's a job if you rush it and make it one. Take your time and enjoy the ride and you get to the same place but with less frustration. The choice is yours.
Newguy: "I don't see anyone, I thought this was a PvP que?"
Newguy waits 8 hours for it to pop, logs, goes to try Ker'rat the next day...
Newguy: "Where is everybody?" checks instance.
Nobody's there, they're all concentrated in another instance and he's got a "No map available" message from the UI when he tries to change instance.
Newguy finally gets an instance with other players after the 15th or 20th try, then finds himself rubberbanding on lag, unable to move, with a slo-motion slideshow for a screen.
THEN he gets vaped.
What a load of bull.
Newbies don't know where the "change instance" button is.

You missed his point, alongside mine and many others. We are not doing stf to grind xp, we would do argala for that. But this pretty much show how bad the current system is. It's supposed to be something you unlock while doing what you always did, but it doesn't really work that way.
As it is now, one need 6000 stf to complete the spec trees (including command), if he is lvl 60. Or 1500 Argala.
150k xp /2000xp (stf, or 8000for stf) X 80 =6000 or 1500. That's 75stf or 18.75 argala for a single spec point.
This enough should show how broken the system is. I'm not even close a thousand STF in any of my character, and that's in about 3 years of play. I'm not even sure I would have completed a single tree in all this time with just stf. That's beyond stupid.

I call BS on that. BZ mission doesn't award xp at all. As for kill, that's ridiculous, about 10xp/kill or something for ground. Guess what, that was my very first try when DR was released, and in few hours, I don't think my xp bar really moved. I went for Tau Dewa right after.
Missions are about 10k xp for the first time (1 argala and 1 stf worth of xp), and 2K xp for a replay (1stf worth of xp).
Foundry, I don't know. And doffing, well, you have the short mission for 80->200xp (peanuts), and that's the majority of them. Then, you have a select few for more, up to 1-2K xp (in DR).
I got your point, I think you missed mine. Let's pretend you had maxed out all the exp, gotten all the spec points (until anniversary raises the cap again) and upgraded all your gear. Pretend you have accomplished this already. Now, what are you doing with that character after this point?
Why not just do those actions now, whatever they will be?
Except for level 60 to unlock missions, and for PvP, nothing else is gated. When I ask what do you need the exp for, that's what I'm asking. If you had the exp and gear what will you do that you cannot do right now?
if you need advice or need someone to show you the ropes on some of these instances let me know. jeffjr@jeffjr is my handle and i have a discussion board for players in sto for exactly this reason. good hunting

Still, that's a long walk to earn 150k xp.
