Been seeing a few people using them. Is it becoming a trend, or is it standard issue from the mods? Can I have one?

They most certainly did not.
It happened to me. I still don't have "post new thread" privs back. No points, no warnings, NO moderations, no messages, nothing. Know what they did? They MUTED me, and others. Because we talked about the problems the game had after DR's release and it was making the devs unhappy that players were discussing the problems and not playing the DR content (HAH, used that term loosely).
Reported the abuse of mod power to support, and they said "We can't help you with anything forum related, we will pass thsi on to the moderation team. (HAH, the corrupt policing themselves)
After about a month I was able to post replies again. I know others were muted as well and there are OTHER forums and communities outside of this forum where these actions earned Cryptic condemnation and a status below that of gutter slime for their tactics. Others were muted for laying out pros and cons of the DR release in a very calm and logical manner and listing more cons than pros and giving the overall release a poor grade. They received the same treatment as many others. Overnight the forums went practially silent and the fanbois ran rough shod over the place more than ever before. Why? Because they were all that was left for about a month!
In such an example I also considered changing my avatar, as that was the ONLY way I could communicate with the people of this forum. They were unaware of the mass mutings and thought people just stopped posting.
EDIT: Those avatars are probably victims of the iron fist CRACKDOWN (no other term for it applies) of dissent on the forums when DR released. Even though it appears many folks can reply to posts that were muted, per my own observations of others I know were muted, the lingering stench of forum abuse is rank on these forums and heavily influences many of our feelings towards the mods at this point in time. I think that because of the way that was handled and how it still hasn't been returned to normal, those avatars are NOT fakes. They are the only possible form of protest available at the time and are still being used because it's not over yet.
When did this happen? Late November? If this is true, I've lost any shred of respect I had for PWE.
And THAT is exactly why they didn't moderate the posts or ban people. You ban somebody, and it shows up in their status. You moderate a post and it's replaced with a text informing others of what has happened.
Can't have that. No. Don't want the public to KNOW there's a crackdown. So they kept it 100% silent with no recourse, no apology, no excuses. I think that signaled the death of this game to me. If they were so insecure about their DR release that they cracked down so badly on the players that were talking about it? Well... let's just say the SAME people have nerfed all joy from the game, ruined XP development, killed off crafting and mats availability, and basically driven any enjoyment from the game. We reported the issue before, but it's been lost in the sea of bull excrement that has since come out and filled the short-term memory of the forums.

The same thing happened after LoR released and the stf reward reduction occured and I don't remember Stahl and company mass muting people after all of the rage on the forums.
