He was always cramping Tuvok's smooth style and embarrassing Janeway. Nelix was good comedic relief but at times, much too serious and cynical when he recalled the attack on his planet.
You're gonna have to contest a lot more than that to convince me of this conclusion. At least Neelix looks pretty normal, talks pretty normal, acts pretty normal and can be walked away from easily.

I'd lean more toward him being an Ewok, he wasn't quite Jar Jar in my humble opinion. But much like the Ewoks created a /facepalm within the Force, Neelix created a /facepalm in the Delta Quadrant.
But seriously, Neelix was a badly written character (in my most humble opinion) that just got worse as Voyager went one. And as others have said, his cooking was so bad that even the SHIP got sick from it. The character was a walking cliche that was someones idea of a joke. A really, really bad joke.
I personally enjoy Ethan Phillips (the actor) but can't stand Neelix. Loved his portrayal of Ulis (the Ferengi Captain) on Enterprise.
He was always cramping Tuvok's smooth style and embarrassing Janeway. Nelix was good comedic relief but at times, much too serious and cynical when he recalled the attack on his planet.
He was a little bipolar at times.. Clearly a man putting on an big smile and overblown jubilance to overcompensate for deep wounds it took too long for him to admit to in the life of the series.
And just too many inconsistencies in general.. His character grew and regressed at times on a weekly basis.. it's nearly as bad as "Bones"is becoming, by the 10th season of that show and she's suddenly inexplicably acting as cold and callus as she did toward victim's families again in season 1? Seriously?
I don't hate Neelix. In fact, I find him quite inspiring.
I mean, the man lost his entire family and everything he loved when a weapon of mass destruction was used against his homeworld (or homemoon). Whereas most people would find peace when they eventually die themselves, he was revived to live on with the knowledge of having no chance to ever see his family again after (permanent) death.
And yet... he's one of the most enthusiastic people in all of Star Trek. He's always ready to cheer you up when you're feeling down. Whereas most people in his position would wonder what they're fighting for when all is permanently lost, he inspires his people to defend themselves and leads them to new chances.
His enthusiasm and motivational capacities are unparalleled. We can learn a lot from The Neelix.
Or more specifically, we could learn a lot from Neelix, provided you're able to withstand all the rambling
Interesting question. You know, I used to be on the hate-wagon for him way back but having rewatched a bunch of episodes as DR was coming out, I've no idea why. I think it was because I was a teenager and teenagers seem to hate adults who are jolly in a preschool kind of way because they're overly conscious of their age like the aspiring middle class are of cutlery. Now I'm older I do appreciate him more as a fundamentally affable character.
His flaw I'd say now is that he had far too little development. He was more a tool to develop other people's characters (that preschool style moral confidant role of saying just the right thing to the person in a tough spot). His role in STO, seeing his friend killed for no reason and replying "no, I'm not angry, I feel sorry for you" (paraphrasing) was perhaps a situation such an sociable character should have been put in during the show.
So yes, 5 years ago I'd say he was a ****ing Jar-Jar but now I'd argue he is far more of that and deserving of a lot of respect. He should have had more development and maybe people wouldn't have hated him so much. Maybe people can get a better explanation than the teen angst thing though.
The highlighted part says it all. Neelix developed over the other six and a half seasons, you know. And I'm pretty sure that he became a pretty decent cook. :P
Speaking of developement, other characters on Voyager never changed, like Kim and Chakotay. Even Paris got more responsible later on. Kim and Chakotay remained dull through the entire series.
He was a little bipolar at times.. Clearly a man putting on an big smile and overblown jubilance to overcompensate for deep wounds it took too long for him to admit to in the life of the series.
Actually.... he did. At one point we found out he was a deserter from the Talaxian military, and blamed himself for the fact that his family was destroyed by the metreon cascade.
I'll grant she can be sexy when she wants to be, but I prefer redheads.

This statement is far from the truth IMO. Jar Jar was 10x more annoying and had no redeemable factors whatsoever. Heck, he was the moron that motioned to give full executive powers to Darth Sidious in disguise! Completely irredeemable!
Neelix was a down to earth kinda guy. He was relatable and yes he was goofy at times, but nowhere near the extent Jar Jar was.
Ethan Phillips did a great job with this character. There were a number of Neelix episodes that were truly great ones, such as Season 1s "Jetrel" or "Phage". Ya, the whole subplot of Neelix being jealous at Tom Paris was drawn out too long and his character development was very slow later on. Neelix however became a sort of father figure for characters like Naomi Wildman and the liberated Borg children. When **** hit the fan, Neelix always did his best to aid the crew in any way he could. Thats redeeming qualities right there.
Overall though, he certainly isn't my favorite character on VOY but not the worst either. I'm sorry, but that honor belongs to Harry Kim. That doesn't mean he was a bad character though or that Garret Wang is a bad actor. Its just that I felt that his stories were all kind of the same. He was this shows "O'Brien" of Voyager in that he always has the be the one that suffers. Miles O'Brien by comparison I liked a lot more though.
I don't mean to disrespect those that hate Neelix, but sometimes I can't help but wonder if we watched the same show and whether they actually watched The Phantom Menace...

That's quite an interesting response. I was the same. Hated him for his annoying traits when I was younger but as an adult realised those traits were a cover for a completely broken man.
Don't get me wrong he still annoys the hell out of me at points but I don't hate him.
I don't know, I find Neelix more or less like Voyager. Sometimes he is boring, sometimes he is great, and most of the time the writing of the character is meh. The acting is good however.
IMO, Wesley and Jake were so much worse. At least they did something from Nog, so he is on the list only for the first season.
I don't blame the actors per say, but the writers.
That's just me, but I personally think Kes is one of the sexiest girl in ST (excluding Tos). If not the most sexy.
I don't find Seven attractive. Too much between the chin and the belt, it you catch my meaning.
Because Star Trek Voyager is the worst piece of TRIBBLE in the history of Star Trek, its only rival is Enterprise, another piece of TRIBBLE of a series that ruined Star Trek lore forever.
Come on, Voyager is freak'n Lost in Space without the comedy. To top it off most of the characters were boring and uninteresting, the series was going down hill so fast that they needed to introduce T&A ala female Borg to kick some life into the series. Heck the producers were having major shouting match and disagreements behind screen. If it wasn't for the UPN network, the series would have remained in the toilet and ended I think by season 2 or 3.
In its defense:
I like Janeway, the character was fleshed out very well.
Neelix was the worst of them all, incompetent, boring, all his episodes with him as lead was a grind to watch. He should have been killed off in the very first ep, and quickly at that. And yes, please compare him to Jar Jar Binks, though he can talk, he was an overall idiot altogether.
Simple answer: because hating Neelix won't make you unpopular (its an easy opinion to have and spout off without qualification or [much] fear of contradiction. He's a character that's annoying by design and so [in spite of his function as a narrative device for a TV show] he's an easy target to antagonize. Just assume his character is trying to be your typical FED officer and whatever disconnect there is between skewed expectation and implementation are entirely on HIM!)

People are missing the point, there are many reasons to hate neelix, or maybe not, but one most important is that he was trying to bang bang Kes. Neelix is the damm pedobear of voyager.
I wouldn't say I hated Neelix ... but imho he was just one of this Alibi-Crewmembers of VOY ... no real function & just there, to be there ... and everything he did, felt kind of "forced" ... he doesn't know anything beyond the Nekrit Expanse ... hmm ok ... let's make him Ambassador or something ...
Just to explain myself in detail ... remember when Kes & Neelix wanted to join the Briefings with some "I'm the 1st Talaxian & Kes is the 1st Ocampa on the Ship" - BS ... that's says about everything ... Kes was actually worse, they struggled to find some use for her, other than being the Alibi-Alien for much longer ... at least Neelix cooked from the beginning ...
Patch Notes : Resolved an Issue, where people would accidently experience Fun.
Reason #1: Because Neelix is the Ur-example of the problems with Voyager.
More reasons:
Neelix is a clown. He's incompetent and stupid, and he doesn't succeed at anything he tries.
Neelix's jokes are terrible. Neelix's kitchen is a titanic health hazard. When Neelix needs something fixed, he goes to the nine months pregnant woman instead of the literally dozens of other science and engineering crew hanging around his septic hell-hole--I mean, kitchen--and asks her to crawl around under the stove to fix it. This is BEYOND mere incompetence and verging on active malice.
Neelix gets at least two people killed through his sheer incompetence and almost destroys the ship through his terrible cooking. His actions are always, inevitably, invariably inconvenient and annoying to the other characters, especially the competent ones (Tuvok, the Doctor, and Tom Paris, who was competent despite being an arrogant, annoying playboy).
Neelix's appearance makes my eyes bleed.
Neelix repeatedly FORCES people to consume his "food", which is established to be inedible and even toxic; two characters WHO ARE STARVING TO DEATH IN AN ALIEN PRISON are the only ones to even CONSIDER voluntarily eating Neelix's septic toxin mush.
Neelix is emotionally abusive and borderline psychopathic in every episode except "Jetrel", where somebody tried, vainly, to save his character.
Berman and Braga forced Neelix's loathsome rear on the viewers.
Ethan Phillips is in fact a very good actor, and so seeing him as Neelix is appalling.
Neelix lies, over and f*cking over.
Neelix claims to be competent at everything, but events inevitably prove him to be a lying piece of TRIBBLE.
In a nutshell, Neelix is a horrible, horrible person and a terrible failed clown.

What truly made me believe that Anakin/ Darth Vader was evil is that he made 3P0.
Just think of all the pain that robot has caused.
People seem to forget that he was born in an area that there was no Starfleet. The rules were much more relaxed so his attitude is the same, relaxed.
The only thing I don't like is they didn't use him enough in STO. I want more Neelix!
PS I was also glad they gave him the chefs job at WW.

I think Hogan would have something to say about Neelix, too... maybe the Voth still have his rotted skull?
And that Nekrit Expanse map nonsense... how he wasn't put off the ship, I'll never know.
Now that's just being mean to Jar Jar...

Yuck, I am not attracted to Peter Pan looking girls. Jeri Ryan was a step in the right direction.
