CPU runs at 100% when STO loaded

Hey everyone,
My flatmate's PC is acting up weird. Whenever he loads STO or anything CPU intensive, it shoots up to 100% usage and the whole system becomes slow.
No viruses detected, temperatures are fine.
Any ideas?
Windows 7 64bit
CPU Intel i5-2500k 3.3ghz
12GB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560Ti graphics card
