We found a new craftable disruptor beam with [cold] mod in the f&e beams categorie. Level requirement should be level 1, but I cannot craft it on level 15. Has anybody with level 20 tried to do so?
Nitpicking is a time-honored tradition of science fiction. Asking your readers not to worry about the "little things" is like asking a dog not to sniff at people's crotches. If there's something that appears to violate natural laws, then you can expect someone's going to point it out. That's just the way things are.
I wonder if this is a level 20 unlock. That would be pretty funny.
Captain Jean-Luc Picard: "We think we've come so far. Torture of heretics, burning of witches, it's all ancient history. Then - before you can blink an eye - suddenly it threatens to start all over again."
"With the first link, the chain is forged. The first speech censured, the first thought forbidden, the first freedom denied, chains us all irrevocably."
I got to 16 on my first skill a while back and saw that it did basically nothing to improve crafting level 12 equipment. It's about 6 months? to 20 so I haven't bothered with it since.

Same here. I guess most people stopped after 15 or 16. Most people which bothered with the new crafting at all, that is.
What joy it would be if you need to be at 20 for the Cold Disruptors!
I'm actually a fan of the crafting. Many of my ships had blue 11 field gen now purple 14. It's a sweet improvement. That and crafting nice stuff for new characters.
I got turned off crafting the special items because they are cheaper to just buy - which made me feel like I wasted my time. The change in materials cost now will fix that and I will craft more special items.
Also the traits are great for characters who lack space traits naturally.
Overall I think it was a great addition to the game. The grind was not too bad compared to other games crafting.

Nah, it lists the actual level required.
My hypothesis after sitting through that monster patch Thursday, is that the Devs already patched in the entire winter event, and it's simply a matter of waiting for the clock.
With that in mind I suspect that this is a new toy that we can get from QWW. IE, it's like the old crafting recipes concept. Acquire X to unlock new shinies.
These are an internal prototype that was supposed to be locked away from players' view. Originally brainstormed as a possible reward from the upcoming Winter Event, they've since been cut due to some technical and UI limitations.
But, I guess the cat's outta the bag here - Yes, we're interested in creating new R&D Recipes as rewards for special events. This was our first attempt, but should not have appeared on our Live Servers in any fashion.
They should not be craftable, regardless of your skill, because they require a Recipe component that cannot be obtained.

Well cool... Keep doing that... Sounds awesome.
Speaking of that... Any plans to turn the Schematics into something useful in the future...
Don't look silly... Don't call it the "Z-Store/Zen Store"...
Yes, we're interested in creating new R&D Recipes as rewards for special events.
Does this mean we will have some other unique craftable items in this year's Winter Event or that something like this won't be ready for a while longer?

Any chance this could eventually result in the ability to craft Andorian phaser and/or reputation specific versions of the special beam array and dual heavy cannons from the crafting system or the addition of a way to obtain weapon classes currently unavailable for special mission reward items like the Dominion Polaron, Hybrid Plasma-Disruptor, Polarized Tetryon, and Piercing Tetryon weapons?

That actually would be a nice giveaway for quest chains.

So what do they do? you had to know people would be curious as to what the [Cold] mod does. :P

And here I thought this implied we might have some space content for this year's Wonderland. Hopefully those technical/UI limitations can be overcome. I totally support event recipe rewards for esoteric craftables.
But speaking of recipes, did last year's consumable fruitcake recipes and stuff finally get added to the Recipes category of the Exchange?

Oh god, I can see it now. Flying around with [Snowball Dual Heavy Cannon MK XIV [Bling] [Acc] [Cold] [Dmg]x2] shooting at massive 'snowman' versions of Undine ships.
Please, no. :P
Join date is wrong, I've actually been around since STO Beta.
True alters don't have a "main". Account wide unlocks for all unique event rewards!!
Sigh, not sure if I even want to see this years wonderland now.
Not because you cut this idea, but because you guys brainstormed and partially implemented something like this. Don't we already have enough grinds as now without special events dropping the recipe to participate in another R&D/upgrade gamble as "reward"?

Apparently there's a new school called 'Schematics' that requires at least lvl 1 to be of any use.
And yeah... the lore behind that mod can only be stupid. :P
Cold is the absence of energy, or possibly a state of entophy. Having disrupters that cleave away the energy holding something together... now that's science fiction
My best guess as to the technical issue Borticus alluded to is that there aren't any weapons that actually do cold damage in SPACE. Cold works on ground and is rare, but it's there. Space? not so much.

From what I understand the game takes into consideration all damage types regardless of space or ground. It's already integrated into the system, it just requires work on Cryptic's end to decide how much cold damage, etc.
Things like Electric damage were once Ground-only, but have since been transitioned into various space abilities. I would say the same thing could be said about Cold damage. I suppose if any species could use cryonics to such a degree as inflict structural damage to something in the cold vaccuum of space, it'd be the Breen.
It may have something to do with game balance, because Cold is a type of environmental damage, and I would assume could not be resisted through conventional means. It is neither kinetic nor energy, and so would only be resisted by powers like Polarize Hull that simply have a general, non-specific damage resistance. In practical game terms, something like Cold damage would absolutely wreck ships designed for your typical Kinetic/Energy damage.
If I were to speculate, I'd say Cold damage in space would be classified as Exotic damage and/or Particle damage, with buffs/debuffs affecting both.
Really, if they wanted to, they could make things in space deal Psionic damage to other ships.

Want this! The crafting system is devalued partly by not being able to craft weapons that match what we are using.
And with that, I'd like to add the ability to craft Quad Cannons that match these other weapon types to the list.
Sigh, not sure if I even want to see this years wonderland now.

If you don't like the reward, don't get it. I don't collect pets, but they still reward those things for people who like it. I'm not going to come on the forums and cry about how unfair it is that they are rewarding pets, because I'm an adult and can recognize that different people like different things.
Given that one of the the biggest problem any spaceship has is with venting excess heat, being hit by a cold ray is kind of hilarious. NASA would be like "Thanks!"

Oh come on - that would be a little fun!..........way better than doing...I dunno....whatever it is we're "supposed" to "be" doing "in" this "game".....
ooooo or a ship race while trying to balance a snowcone...or something
Just wacky fun!
i know materials can exhibit strange properties close to absolute zero (superconductivity and the like) but ultimately the alloys that starship hulls are made from should withstand this?!

Infinite possibilities have implications that could not be completely understood if you turned this entire universe into a giant supercomputer.
STO Resources: <Ship Comparison - All Tiers + Small Craft + Hangar Pets> <Damage Resistance>
<R&D + Upgrade Costs> <Duty Officer Finder> <Suliban Doff Reqs> <Fleet Costs> <Rep Costs>
<Keybind Tour the Galaxy> <Fleet / Armada Management> <Currency Exchange> <Other STO Links>
In the series, they do. And I think they use some kind of disruptor-polaron hybrid ingame.
