I'm running different avatars through MI. Today I got b*tched at twice, first because somone says "don't close any rifts"
umm the point IS to close the rifts....
Second was flying a dauntless. there are 2 escorts and 2 cruisers.. fine I'll fly behind let them engage the ships and close the rifts. so I get a "Hey, stop stealing my rifts" comment.
STO is about my Liberated Borg Federation Captain with his Breen 1st Officer, Jem'Hadar Tactical Officer, Liberated Borg Engineering Officer, Android Ops Officer, Photonic Science Officer, Gorn Science Officer, and Reman Medical Officer jumping into their Jem'Hadar Carrier and flying off to do missions for the new Romulan Empire. But for some players allowing a T5 Connie to be used breaks the canon in the game.

ya just gotta laugh sometimes...
I haven't had that happen yet but people always try to race me to the rifts and even will come up and try to close the rift I'm on when I'm halfway through closing it. People are pretty dumb and petty sometimes.
My current strategy now is find a Sci ship buddy and literally follow them everywhere, helping them clear the mobs with my cruisers/destroyers. It works pretty well actually.
Today, for example, I followed a Sci destroyer that didn't seem to understand that I could get the power transfers while he did the rifts. Fortunately, he listened to my request that we tackle them that way over the mic.
On my bad days, I've had had really annoying team-mates that refuse to team up and just get carried away fighting endless mobs that keep on growing larger and larger. I've also had an occasional afker that does absolutely nothing. It's just the luck of the pug draw I guess or possibly Cryptic's poor afk punishment system.

STB teams stopped closing rifts on Normal a while ago. You just don't really have to if you kill them fast enough, and fighting the huge groups that can pile up is pretty fun.
I can actually understand why someone would want to leave the Rifts open. Leaving the Rifts open means more enemies to defeat which means a higher XP/minute rate. If all the Rifts are closed, then no XP until another Rift opens. Of course, this strategy requires being able to deal with all the enemies available and most people will get overwhelmed by this strategy.
well, I have zero intention of donating 8K dilithium and 400EC per day for the "privilege" of being in a fleet, so it's pug or nothing
If that is the fleet you joined, if that is its policy...... man, some fleets just don't understand the bottom line of fleets.
A group of players in a game. Not a secondary job, not the leaders being more important. A group of gamers. Thats it.
Seriously, there are many fleets out there that are low-to-none pressure with very great people in them. Not only speaking of my own, but about the countless others. People I have never met, but should meet someday.
Keep trying to find the fleet that fits your needs. If you misjoin one, the leave button is very easy to find.
There's plenty of fleets out there. Ours has 3 Divisions, and charges nothing, ever. You "pay your keep" by donating as & when you choose to fleet projects. This get you the credits you're going to need if you plan to buy from the fleet stores anyway, so...it's basically your choice unless a section of the project is already filled.
Depending on what ship I am in depends what I do, either I will loop around and hit the satellites or I will orbit the station handling the mobs and keeping it healed.
OP, the player who uttered the line, 'Stop stealing my Rifts!' has my vote for the Most Clueless STO Player Evah. Thanks for the laugh. I really needed it.:D

My guess is some people are using these as Specialization point grinding and closing rifts could reduce the opportunity to do this.
I had a couple of runs were I just lolled at the players, every time I tried to close a rift in one this other dude would try to close the exact same one. Followed me for the first five mins doing it. It was really funny if it wasn't so pointless (no he wasn't helping clear mobs, just getting shot by them!).
Another one was an all Science Captain affair. No-one had enough DPS to take anything down so within about 3 mins the base was destroyed, kinda funny but I think it was about a total of 3-5 rifts closed before the timer ran out XD
Chris Robert's on SC:
"You don't have to do something again and again and again repetitive that doesn't have much challange, that's just a general good gameplay thing."
It does seem like it is easier to activate the defense systems if you don't close rifts because it takes a long time for the spawn ships to travel to the base. As soon as you kill spawn ships new ones spawn, so I can see an advantage to leaving them alive so you don't have spawns while you are capping defense systems.
Its about leveling toons. Closing rifts means fewer XP earning targets to shoot.
As much as it is nice to be on a great team that seals them all and beats the tar out of the first few ships. Cryptic has it set so that if you do really well at some point you are going to sit there for 4-5 min with nothing to do. That could be why some may say don't seal them. Only teams with no DPS at all should have much issue with just leaving most of them open.
I got stuck in a pug the other day that was absolutely terrible. I don't remember what else was there's but I do remember 1 player in a phantom Intel escort. He died. Twice. On normal. The station actually almost went offline. I don't understand why players are so stupid sometimes. Is it really that difficult to understand that sci ships close rifts, cruisers activate power transfer stations, and escorts deal with the enemy ships? I mean, what's so damn hard about that? And what's this TRIBBLE about stealing rifts or not closing them? I'm pretty sure you don't get any extra points for closing them, and I know that not closing them only leads to disaster. If people wanna test their ship against a bunch of enemies at once, they should go to the solonae dyson sphere and engage the voth around the towers on their own. Don't drag down other players trying to get **** done.

A good escort can do all three. Any good player can do all three, there are no rules for who does what.
I've had more than a few runs where if I'm not activating power stations in my escort no power stations get activated. Same goes for me closing rifts.
IMHO the problem is cryptic's obsession with time gating everything.
If the Dreadnought would just spawn after X rifts are closed a lot more players would actually play the mission as intended.
As it stands it is just more effective to use those 15 minutes you're forced to stay there to grind XP, which means leaving the rifts open. Losing a tiny amount of Marks doesn't matter much as you can get them elsewhere with much less effort. And the Daily Bonus Marks aren't linked to mission score...
well, I have zero intention of donating 8K dilithium and 400EC per day for the "privilege" of being in a fleet, so it's pug or nothing
you can always join our fleet, you can donate as much or as little as you like even if its only fleet marks although anything you do want to give is very appreciated, but you will never be kicked from the fleet for not donating enough as long as you are active in the game (i.e. log in once a month or two & log out), and if we ever do crop inactive members they will always be welcome to join again if they start playing again a year or two later.
there is no pressure to join in fleet teams but you can always join in one if you want if you see another member asking if anyone wants to join a team.
we have a fed fleet 'the britannian empire' and a Klingon fleet 'the_black_knights' so if you want to join a fleet without being preasured into giving vast amounts look us up.
When I think about everything we've been through together,
maybe it's not the destination that matters, maybe it's the journey,
and if that journey takes a little longer,
so we can do something we all believe in,
I can't think of any place I'd rather be or any people I'd rather be with.
So, I'm now off the hook for trying to fire my weapons at a Mirror Ship, and forgot that I was still cloaked?
Sweet.
( Yes, it happened )
*whistles nonchalantly while he deletes the log entry about trying to start a power transfer while cloaked...and getting hammered by the MI ships from the rift above*
im always out to close rifts where ever possible, however when there is one, and 3 frigates come through, regrettably the miranda mirror class as well, another rift and then another and before long im dead locked in fighting npc ships, with the 4 players on the other side of the map fighting next to nothing. a regular happening i notice but only very tiny notice. it usually takes em about 5 minutes to notice and help out.
if your looking for something to shake your head out is when pug groups dont bother looking at what they are doing first. :P
T6 Miranda Hero Ship FTW. Been around since Dec 2010 on STO and bought LTS in Apr 2013 for STO.

I concur that both of them were in the wrong.
