Found a great one from Mark Twain that I'm adopting for my Fed human's ship:

    That is great.
    One of my favorites yet.

Very very nice work! Makes me I wish we could find a way to place some fan art such as this into STO.

I'm an atheist, sort of. I believe that the existence of a deity is an inherently untestable hypothesis, that must therefore be removed from consideration until it has been proposed again in a testable format.

But I find that quote to be rather insulting to the many perfectly decent religious people I know.

Wasn't meant to insult anyone, but I have certain 'issues' with organized religion. Believing in a higher power is something everyone struggles with in their soul, but it's also completely different than having religion or not.

Yeah, I have issues with megachurches and certain popes, too (the present guy's actually pretty decent, though), but I'm not a rabid religion-hater like that pr*ck Dawkins. I'll point out that religion is illogical if I'm pushed or someone's annoying me, but otherwise I'll keep it to myself.

    Name: USS Feynman
    Class: Multi-Mission Strategic Explorer
    Registry Number: NCC 91701-N

"There are thousands of years in the past, and there is an unknown amount of time in the future. There are all kinds of opportunities, and there are all kinds of dangers.”

The quote is from the man after whom my ship is named, and who is rather a hero of mine, the physicist Richard Feynman.

The registry number is simple enough to understand the reasoning behind - my first Miranda class ship had the registry NCC 91701 and, although each subsequent ship has had different names and so don't stick to the Enterprise convention for consecutive lettering, I've given each one the registry of NCC 91701 plus whatever the next letter of the alphabet happens to be.

I would pause to note that the quote in question is not from Heinlein himself, but is a misquoting of Heinlein's character Lazarus Long. Heinlein didn't always agree with Long.

Agreed. It was paraphrased because I can't remember the exact wording of the original quote, never could, since jr.high.

    http://atheism.about.com/library/quotes/bl_q_RHeinlein.htm
History does not record anywhere at any time a religion that has any rational basis. Religion is a crutch for people not strong enough to stand up to the unknown without help. But, like dandruff, most people do have a religion and spend time and money on it and seem to derive considerable pleasure from fiddling with it. [Robert Heinlein, Notebooks of Lazarus Long]
A religion is sometime a source of happiness, and I would not deprive anyone of happiness. But it is a comfort appropriate for the weak, not for the strong. The great trouble with religion - any religion - is that a religionist, having accepted certain propositions by faith, cannot thereafter judge those propositions by evidence. One may bask at the warm fire of faith or choose to live in the bleak certainty of reason- but one cannot have both. [Robert A. Heinlein, from "Friday"]

I have issues with organized religion as well, but unlike Heinlein, I'm just strong enough to realize what my own limitations are and to know there are some things I will never have the answer to. From there I can either choose to believe that someone up there does have a handle on what's going on, or that we're the product of a system where things just happen for no reason or purpose. For my part, I've seen too much good arise from bad circumstances to accept that it all happens according to the universe's chance table.

I am going to have to give some serious though to the dedication plaques of both the USS Chin'toka, which will have a quote originating in the Dominion War timeframe since its name memorializes "recent history" rather than "ancient," and the USS Akellen Macet, since it will almost certainly draw from Cardassian literature or history.

While I MIGHT find DS9 quotes, it also means that I have completely free rein if I want to take it. Much to ponder, for sure.
