Use your head, when is the last time you heard of someone getting banned over their name?
I have in-game friends who've been badnamed. 24 hour temp ban is standard procedure when you get it.
Last time I checked the Dev was still known as CrypticGeko, and not just 'Geko'....and like I said before,in game Devs and GM's are clearly tagged as being Devs or GM's,you can't fake that.
Actually, he's usually known as "CaptainGeko".

What if it was a gorn named "Gecko"?
Gecko is actually a dictionary word. Geko isn't.

    it's "gecko" in Englisch.

no I lie because I have nothing better to do.

at least Im sure it will happen to you ....I want to see your mugshot when you get banned for stupid reasons.

Meh it stinks if it's true but it's pretty simple: don't tease dragons or in this case geko's. Think of it as a free renaming token. I had to pay 300 zen last month to rename my Klingon alien girl; you get to do it for free

They should have locked "Geko" as a name, and variation around. Same for others devs name, at least the one we heard about (Taco, Smirk...).

Getting a ban for naming is character Geko is dumb. A name change, that's another thing.
Maybe he never heard of the dev, and if you never go to the forum, you have no way to know.
As people said, it's a small lizard name....

    It was not even offensive...

I agree, however, we dont know the history behind this player, maybe this is not a 1st time offense. i'm pretty sure that is something we will never know the truth about though lol

First I don't think so just so you know this game made net $21.6 million so despite what you people may want this game isn't going anywhere and evidently they must be doing something right second you only make up a small portion of the people that play this game I know that may bruise your ego but there's a lot of people that play this game look don't come anywhere near these forms so yeah I think I'll do just fine and don't go to business where i rely on customers with customers like you I would rather go out of business so honestly when a game makes that much money and you think that you're the majority and you're not certainly know what the hell you're talking about case in point electronic arts has for the third year in a row to judge the worst company and customer service on the planet yet they grossed millions of dollars he continue to make tons of money do you know why? Because just like this place here there are tons of douche bags that hang out here and complain if think they are the majority and they are not so your actual folly is thinking that some we can ignore their customers and be out of business within a week that's clearly not true also they're not ignoring their customers to just ignore the customers that overly complain and whine all the time granted this company's done a lot of things that I don't like but honestly at some point you have to draw the line "this far and no further" because some of you have crossed the line there is no reason for the way that you act and some of the things to say in these forums these people are human beings and at least give them some type of respect honestly I think some of you people need to step back and take a look at yourself in the mirror this is a videogame first and foremost no matter what you may think it is a videogame and for some of the venom that you spit at these people you are disgusting human beings most of you I don't care what you think about what I write but I assure you this I'm not like the devs hear you got some in the say it's over-the-top I will call you out

it's a product..and ffs learn to use paragraphs. STO is a PRODUCT. like anything you buy. it's entertainment which is something else you can also buy (shocker eh?) you mistaken about several things that lack of experience with mmo's is showing.

most people won't even bother to complain, they just leave...especially former fanbois. they can't complain, it makes a lie of every thing they said every time they defended cryptic...so they just slink out.

newbs who quit won't bother with he forums either...and if you seriously think that people who dislike what has happened since delta is a small number you are deluded. this disatisfaction is not only all over the forums, it's in other mmo's now from former players of sto.

you, like cryptic just do not get this modern world. these forums aren't the only outlet, more talk goes on about other games IN other games than cryptic realizes. word of mouth matters, and that word isn't pretty for cryptic.

so keep your head firmly entrenched k? all rainbows and sparkly lights...this fiasco is worse than cryptic or any fanboi/white knight realizes because you just cannot look beyond your narrow views.

This is extremely weak of Cryptic.

    Geko ???? really.

I hate to break it to the dev team but half the kids playing this game don't know who Geko is. Seeing as its a pretty common nick you will find in online games in general.... its not shocking that people would name there toons Geko.

If Cryptic thinks there Developers "Handles" deserve protection (Not like anyone named there toon "Stephen Dangelo" or something)... then they need to create an actual reserved name mechanic to there game. If they don't want toons with the name "geko" or any of there other wonderful handles... then they should simply have a mechanic that doesn't allow you to do it in the first place.

... have they banned anyone with any of the following in there names (not +anything vulgar) Tumer, or Inferno, or Bort, or Stahl, or flakes... or bran, or Wish... or Stone. Cause if they haven't done any of that then they owe this person an apology... and to make the policy clear. Easiest thing would be to add the name blocking from the toon creator / rename feature. Really it shouldn't be so hard to add a quick if "text input" = "Array of bad letter combos" then DISABLE Name accept button.

Really wouldn't that simple piece of code not be able to keep 99% of all the Badnames from happening. Cryptic must hate there GMs... making them process all those player name reports... when one Stupid piece of code that should take 10min to knock out and debugg... could and should easily keep almost all of them from ever becoming toon names to start with.

this is not the first and wont be the last random bans.

they banned people for the gold sellers name....even posting the name was instaban.THey banned for doffs ...posting doffs in chat ,they ban for having toons named Geko...

I understand its not the entire company's fault for randomly banning people but they pay the GMs so they have to take the responsability for whatever BS GMs do.

The real issue here is the amateur hour game code that allows you to name your toon pretty much anything you want... and then lets players report you so an actual employee has to go chasing database entries and then "badname" people and in some cases hand out slaps and bans.

If they don't want toons to have the letters "G-E-K-O" in that order in any toon names... 3-4 lines of code can make that happen. Same code can keep any other combo of 4 letter words or any other combo of letters they find offensive from ever being added to a toons name.

In most Online games from most half decent developers trying to type naughty combos of letters into a toon name will NOT result in a properly created toon with that name. lol

wrong again...wtf. i said bieber, and to be blunt anyone can have a kid or themselves with that name and BIEBER CAN"T DO JACK.

the law cannot force you to change your name because it matches with someone elses. IT'S BEEN TRIED.

Sorry, but this is just stupid.
Most games will do this if you name a character after a Dev. You know, so people don't impersonate them?
    Ban justified.
