I PUG'd my whole time in sto and sure often time it might just be or two of us carrying everyone but it was fine and gave people new to the game to still get their dil and marks.

Don't really care if I have to carry one more guy raging because he died refusing to spawn.

I do as much as I can on every run completely independently of what everyone else is doing.

New-elite maps might change that and force me to cut people off and stop helping.
Shame, waste of time and totally pointless

Ah well, f.. it dude, let's go bowling

I wonder how this situation would be scored under the aforementioned dps/participation system.

I am an engineer and set up my cruiser build and crew for tanking and healing. I do little dps and normally FAW to draw fire. When I go to a scenario like Crystalline Catastrophe, and I am with a bunch of really good players, there isn't really much for me to do but enjoy watching them. They obviously are experienced captains, with good ship builds and use good tactics. They keep their ships and shields in good repair while attacking. I usually only transfer and ET3 when a ship is at or going below 50% or is dropping hull rapidly otherwise it seems a waste, in the event someone else might possibly actually ever need it.

With maxed out shields and repair consoles my "tanky" ship is tough to kill so I really don't have anything to do but watch and throw out my pittance of dps. Cynically speaking, if I didn't follow some of the more fragile escorts around in the unlikely event I might be needed, I might almost be considered afk myself since I don't need to do much. Sometimes I have been in groups with captains who are so experienced that they fly to me when they need a repair and I really don't much even need to move! ;- )

I look on afk'ers as a work-around. Certainly, working a "short team" makes an STF more difficult but for me anyway, it makes the victory that much sweeter. I meet some really, truly good players that way was well.

Don't you ultimately feel sorry for the afk'ers? They sit, doing nothing then collect a reward so they can improve their ship, abilities etc so they can do what; Sit somewhere else doing nothing in a ship with purple rather than blue equipment? How sad is that?

They should implement the "I AM AWAKE!" method like they do on Trains which is kind of like a deadman's switch.

If the game notifies that you are AFK in a Team/STF/Event/Whatever a terrible alarm klaxxon sounds which requires you to click a big red flashing button on the screen to deactiviate.

If you fail to do so you go into self destruct and are removed from the map and team with penalties for afking. :D

You are assuming that the AFKer's are actually afk. Quite often they are not. They actually put effort into AFKing.
It's not my fault if you feel trolled by my Disco ball... Sorry'boutit.

They definitely need to come up with something better to deal with the growing AFK'er problem. I have purposely quit PvE missions due to more than one AFK'er being in the instance. The CEE seems to be the worst when the bonus event is on and the more current two rep system queues and Colony Invasion is still fairly popular for an AFK'er as well. Before I quit, I simply say in team chat that I will not contribute to someone doing nothing and getting rewarded for it, then leave.

Exactly what you should be dong, I also in no way aid these people.

If they are going to leech, or play it off like they are not doing so, but you can easily tell they are, than wait for the penalty time for leaving expires. (yes, there is a period of time in mission that needs expire before leaving)

I do this as well, when idiot trolls are in a mission, or player's who are just complete idiots, not willing to listen/learn mission objectives.

I can do my job more than proficiently, and still be able to monitor other's activities. (I am very good at multi-tasking)

This is how, I can easily tell the difference between someone experiencing connection related issues, and those who would play it off like they are, or leeching/fake afking, etc.

I can easily tell, who doesn't have a freaking clue what they are doing, and which ones are trying, but may be confused slightly, and are asking for what needs done in chat!

People easily give themselves away by their actions!

And also, for those who claim they have gotten penalties for connection related issues, I myself have experienced virtually every kind of issue described, and not once have I received a penalty for it!

So, I cannot say anything besides, something they are doing is wrong, and not the games fault!

Or will put some (minimal) effort into making a macro to deal with that red button, thus making it even harder to identify them.

Exactly, you know the types, where they sit doing nothing, but either hit need on all loot, or what I have noticed recently hitting decline on all loot, so they appear to not be leeching. (sorry, they still are leeching, it's just they are leeching for end rewards)

i think AFK'ers should be tossed off the team after a minute get the time penalty and no rewards.

basiclly you have a timer to be active if you are not active in lets say a timer of 30 seconds to a minute you get tossed out and a new player added.
