I have seen quite a few AFK'ers in the elite queues; mostly in Undine Infiltration Elite. Short of cursing at them and reporting them as AFK, is there anything else that can be done about those parasite?
What happens when they are reported? Anything? Or does it just remain part of a log that may or may not be reviewed?
Could there be an option to kick the AFKer out of the game and also suffer a 1 hour cooldown to play any queue PvE if there is a unanimous vote by the other players?
long answer kicks would be even worst then afkers. remember we're on the internet and the internet is full of trolls and idiotss.
Which is why I suggested a unanimous vote. Sure, there's bound to be a troll or two in a missions, but I would assume not everyone will be a troll. So if it is 3 votes to kick but the 4th player abstains from voting or votes no, then the AFK'er remains.
I know how you feel, it felt like I was going to die of a ANEURYSM, but there's not much you can do other than report them. I don't exactly know what Cryptic does to them but I'm guessing something along the lines of probation from the queues or even the game.
I'm sorry to people who I, in the past, insulted, annoyed, etc.
Been penalized as an afk'r twice in the last week. The first time was a sudden disconnect with no lead indications of connectivity issues. Managed to get logged back in and my ship was still in the PVE as it ended.
The second was this morning. Crystal Catastrophe Elite...was there, logged in, the whole time with serious jitter bug issues. Was still firing, dropping GWs, etc; on my end. Was bad but, seemed to be working. Suddenly my ship is at the edge of the map, match ends; 2 hour penalty.
After checking pathing, tracert, and a few websites; turns out that the ISP has been having intermittent, 100% packet losses, at random spots across the US(for the last week, plus)...with intermittent becoming constant...for the last 8 hours. Been re-running, and rechecking, periodically. Seems to be improving but, still not where it should be.

That'd explain a few random afkers or people not... really involved much
Would be great if, when entering an STF, especially an elite, a player MUST contribute a certain amount of damage to normal spawn AND bosses in order to be awarded any of the rewards. Not a ton of damage, mind you just enough to ensure youre not afking the event.
They still get around the AFK penalty. I have been in a few matches where we had an afker. He still got his rewards and loot during the match though. I'm not going to say how they did it as I will not perpetuate the hows.
Im hoping with DR and the new way its set up that if anyone goes AFK at any point it will cause the match to fail. Since failure is now an option, but we will see.

Thing is, there are enough folks that troll pugs doing just that right now...with DR it will be that much worse. Basically a death to pugs, as folks will have to make friends - fly with them - and avoid all the nonsense that will exist in the pugs. Not a case of saying all pugs will be like that, and it's just a game - so it's not like we're finding cures for diseases, but our waste of time should be entertaining and not some troll's entertainment.
what you do is, you fly into the stf in question, and find 4 trolls who aggro everything, draw all the mobs to the spawn and then let themselves die.
following which, they lol until you leave and get hit with the leavers penalty because of systems that are perfectly engineered to grief others.
vote to kick? exploitable for griefing other players, treats symptom, not cause.
timed lock-out? exploitable for griefing other players, treats symptoms not cause.
you know what would actually fix the ****ing AFKers and not be inherently exploitable for griefing?
actually bloody well rewarding actually useful actions in the game!! and plug it all into a scoreboard, so that the best players get rewarded proportionally to how well they performed.
useless dps on target? no points.
great dps? great points
only do enough dps to get 20% of the targets hp when the other guy got 80%? you only get 20% of the points for the kill.
shared a useless heal? no points
spammed an unnecessary heal just to boost? no points.
shared a useful heal? great points
heal also cleared mal effects? bonus points
heal landed just it time to save them? bonus points.
you know, incentivisation thats actually fit for an mmo instead of the lan-party/single player rpg system of just show up & get rewards because in a single player game doing nothing would get you nowhere on account of there not being anyone to carry the afker.
how do you tell if something is done deliberately?
those who did it describe it as working as intended.
those who did it express no desire to change it.
those who did it repeat the same action.
except those hardly work.
people still afk in stfs constantly. they just macro their ship to fly in circles. or park them in a mob lane like in vortex or cure
Your point system is flawed, but I see where you're coming from.
I don't think the point here is to punish those who try throughout the event but aren't doing as much damage, etc as others but to punish those who sit back, do nothing and reap an unjust reward.
Again, I tihnk if your abiulity to claim the reward is directly contributed to accumulated damage to boss and non-boss NPCs it would work much better. If you want, link the higher rewards to your score system but allow everyone who contributes throughout the event to claim a reward as well.
This way, AFKers who do little to nothing will get what they deserve: nothing.
The Internet is full of sociopaths.
Cryptic doesn't like coming to the forums because they don't like the attitude of people on the Internet but they force us to pug stf's with them.
Solution is to not force grouping. Because you cannot fix people.
Hmmmm.... I guess there is no easy solution to AFK'ers....
I thought it would be easier to find a solution for AFK'ers than it would to find a cure to cancer. I guess I was wrong... oh wait, AFK'ers are a form of cancer... never mind...
There are so many 500+ player fleets out there that run constantly as a group, I would consider joining one of those if the AFK is a problem for you.
I do my runs in the public que because I find it infuses a challenge. if there is an afk, or someone undergeared with little knowledge of the game, I win: the run is more enjoyable and engaging for me.
There is nothing that can be done about them because no matter what is done people who want to afk are going to find a way around whatever measures you create. A simple macro spamming shiled distribution would be enough to convince the server that you are active.
Seriously though, get in a big fleet, or join a stf channel.

AFKers will just know the amount then and do that and then stop. Not a total solution.
Any AFK-voting tool will become the ultimate elitist griefing tool.
There could be something said for a progressive penalty system, where the penalty becomes harsher when you do it too often. Then again, it could also just be punishing those with bad connections even harder.

The DPS scoring you put there just incentivizes going full DPS and drowning out the rest of the teams DPS. The combat log would have to get way better to do anything meaningful because right now it doesn't register a lot of stuff.
As to useless damage in the Borg STF, I have an idea (I may be talking nonsense so prepared for backlash). Let the generators and transformers give something ridiculous like 999% defense and 100% resistance to everything to their targets. Wasted DPS problem solved since I don't think devs envisioned 30k+ DPS ships FAWing away at everything.

the mmo environment of killing all enemies to get the reward as fast as possible already does that.
there is no role for other classes, and it has been delusional for a long time to pretend otherwise. but it at least actually rewards players for effort instead of all the troll baiting devs do by adding gear scores or vote to kick or leavers/afk penalties.
it means that that the ****ty npc designs would need to improve so that they had armour reducing the effect of cheap **** like faw and that the npc's actually had an ai to use counter abilities.
not necessary to go that far, but thats the idea. the simple act of making transformers borderline immune to energy weapons but take extra damage from gravity wells, high yield torpedos, and tricobalts is another obvious solution to put pressure on players to have less beamspam.
doesnt really matter if they envisioned 30+dps faw ships or not, they did create them, and since tehy refuse to correct the underlying problems behind them. eg 2 tac consoled cruiser stats etc. they did do it deliberately.
but with delta rising there will be 3 different tiers of content difficulty, but still questionable incentivisation to do the harder more time consuming content.
On the matter of 30k boats and ISE:
Right now, every hit that lands on the "protected" targets - generator-boosted transformer, Transformer boosted gateway, etc. "counts" as an actual hit for purposes of damage done - but does not "affect" the mission because said damage is fully healed as soon as it lands...
Creates situations where a 5 million HP gateway "takes" 10 million in damage. Of course, when there's "effectively more HP" out there because of heals, overall DPS numbers can be inflated...
However, if the "protected" targets had 100% resistance, then the combat log would read akin to "Player's Brand X Array Fire at Will does 0 [1,500] damage to gateway" - or something akin to that - at this point, the parsers that parse "effective" damage - aka damage that actually landed, would show a much lower DPS number, even though the better parsers that show base damage would show higher numbers (say, a Scim with a "baseline" 8k only does 10k effective because of all those zeroes, instead of 30k because of piles of high-damage hits landing just to be healed...)
Detecting big-time "anti-old-school" bias here. NX? Lobi. TOS/TMP Connie? Super-promotion-box. (aka the two hardest ways to get ships) Excelsior & all 3 TNG "big hero" ships? C-Store. Please Equalize...

They definitely need to come up with something better to deal with the growing AFK'er problem. I have purposely quit PvE missions due to more than one AFK'er being in the instance. The CEE seems to be the worst when the bonus event is on and the more current two rep system queues and Colony Invasion is still fairly popular for an AFK'er as well. Before I quit, I simply say in team chat that I will not contribute to someone doing nothing and getting rewarded for it, then leave.

Looking for a new fleet? Drop by the in-game chat channel, "tenforwardforum", and say hi to the members of A Fleet Called Ten Forward (Fed) and The Orion Pirates (KDF). If you already have a fleet you are happy with, please feel free to drop by our chat channel if you are looking for a friendly bunch of helpful people to socialize with.
Pre-made teams and/or DPS channel teams are incredibly mind numbing.
This program, though reasonably normal at times, seems to have a strong affinity to classes belonging to the Cat 2.0 program. Questerius 2.7 will break down on occasion, resulting in garbage and nonsense messages whenever it occurs. Usually a hard reboot or pulling the plug solves the problem when that happens.

Sadly there are just things that any way you try to cure it just makes things worse, and this is very much one of them.
Putting the leaver penalty on the STFS was the worst thing STO ever did! before then everyone could just leave and re-queue and life went on.
Again, an attempted solution makes things worse on the honest ones.
There could be something said for a progressive penalty system, where the penalty becomes harsher when you do it too often. Then again, it could also just be punishing those with bad connections even harder.
