I love Star Trek Online, and I especially love how you made the ship combat much like Star Trek Bridge Commander. [The combat in Bridge Commander was awesome btw]

However I'd have to say one of the most disappointing aspects of Star Trek Online is not being able to zoom all the way into first person view.

Now, ship combat I'd mostly like to be able to zoom in for aesthetic reasons. Sure, I would use third person in ship combat but I would use first person alot to bring a sense of ... being there into the game. As of right now, I just don't feel like I'm really IN the game, which really ruins the Star Trek experience for me.

I would especially like to be able to zoom into first person on the ground. Looking at my character the whole time sitting there in front of me is highly annoying. To be honest it's a real eyesore having my character in front of the screen the whole time and not having any way to get him off there. I would LOVE to be able to zoom into first person view. In fact I find myself in ground combat leaning against walls so that the view goes into accidental first person view just so I can enjoy it for a few seconds.

Being able to zoom into first person view on the ground would also help me to feel more like I'm IN the game, rather than looking at it from a birds eye point of view.

So in the end, I would really like first person view. I'm not saying FORCE everyone into first person view. Just please let us have an option to zoom in if we want to? It wouldn't hurt anyone to at least make the option available. In fact I believe it would greatly add to the games realism aspect.

I want to say, in a more positive note... that I absolutely LOVE the ship to ship combat aspect of this game. I was worried that the ship combat was going to be point and click crud like Eve Online, and I was very pleased when I got into the game and found that it was like bridge commander.

I love the game, I just think that it would be really awesome to be able to zoom into first person view at will using the mouse wheel scroll.

    Thanks!

I hope your talking about a bridge view for combat.that would be awasome

Not only be allowed to go into first-person view, but bring an entire secondary paradigm (as most games do) that allows you to utterly dispense with all of the “camera” nonsense and control waste.

Presently, ground combat is appalling. Forget that your crew pathing couldn’t be worse if they just ran around at random. Not only do they get stuck around corners and such…they run out into enemy fomations to lay minefields, aggroing them early and spoiling your setup. They don’t even stand precisely on their marks…you have to move them elsewhere and back to get them close to where you want them. And this is made worse by the fact that you have to do it away from them, as the marker tool for some reason allows collision with bodies and objects. If you fix only one thing about the combat mechanic, please turn off all but floor collisions while using the crew placement tool. You might as well, since you can’t target, shoot, or give other orders with that thing in your hand anyway.

Now, my point is, try doing all of this through the back of your own skull! Targeting is difficult enough in this game without having to rubberneck over your own shoulder. And your only other option is to zoom all the way out until you’re suddenly playing Starcraft, save that every time you turn a corner, you bump your head on the archways and set decoration, violently zooming in and out without warning. It’s like playing Diablo on acid…which, I grant you, would be an experience. But not one I wish to have at the moment!

So let us make 3rd P go away if we like. And when we do, get rid of the camera controls, and sticky targeting, which makes you flip around inexplicably when you’re trying to run the opposite direction, or hang up on walls and crates like it’s your first time in shoes. And that annoying bug where switching weapons snaps the camera to a side view so, I guess, you can see how kewl you look dying with your new gun in your hand. o.o

Make it all go away, since playing from miles above is about as immersive as coin-op Donkey Kong, and over-the-shoulder is enough frustration and vertigo to make you refresh your screen with lunch.

Please, please, please, please, please, PLEASE!!! Give us 1st person perspective! Leave 3rd P to all those people who need to see how kewl thay l00k sh00ting thar 1337 lazurz.

Yea, bridge commander bridge combat view would be awesome too. I'm really trying to focus on first person the most though, because that's most important to me personally.

Man, star trek bridge commander like combat would be SO awesome. I didn't care much for starfleet command type combat.

Bridge commander combat would make me play just for the ship combat itself. Oh man, some good memories with that game. I would SO love for cryptic to mimic that game. Oh man would I. That was one game where it wasn't such a big deal I couldn't zoom into first person mode [Although I DO wish that was a feature they would have added].

My brother started playing about two weeks back and he is a big fan of first person view. I am curious if that is anywhere in the future for development. Thanks !!

I agree 100% aside from better ground combat, I have been making quite a collection of screenshots I have whole folder called strange new worlds and my ship is allways smack dab in the middle. Even with a cloaked klingon vessel zoomed all the way out it still stares me right in the face.

Please Cryptic give us this option. I will even stop asking for color hues back for this

First person view is possible using ST:O. Just stand with your toons back against a wall. Instant first person view. No reason not to give us the option, especially for ground actions.

    Good suggestion, OP.

This may have been mentioned, in fact I think it may have, but I would like to have the option to conduct space combat from my bridge. What's the point of having bridges (and ship interiors by extension) if they can only be used outside of combat and then are only really worth it if you have a lot of friends online and run around doing nothing on your ship.

Ground combat first person would be good, but what would really sell it for me would be space combat conducted from my bridge...totally sweet.

    EDIT:

    P.S.
Sorry for Zombie Thread, I did a google search for first person view for STO and this was the first link. But still....

Well it IS possible to create a "1st person view" right now. But it has the disadvantage that you'd have to turn in on a litle complicatet every time you load a new map and that you cant turn it off once its active (or at last I dont know how to.
I personaly use it just on ground, in space its... well not that great.
Well if anyone wants to try it anyway; is prety easy.

1st: programm the command via console. You have to chose one not-yet assigned button, in my exampe the "b". then simply add /bind b "cam_distance_interp_speed 0" (you have to programm that for space and ground each, and for every character, of course just once)
On ground you have to turn of "use zoom cam with aim mode", because that breaks the 1st person view every time you start aim mode. It is the function above the "auto fire" in "Controls"
2nd: back a wall (on ground) or asteroid (in space) so the camera is insede the char = 1st person persepctive,
3rd press "b" or what button you ever choose.

    Have fun.

Oh and: Id prefer a simply "zoom in" function too. Until then I'll use the 1st person mode that way. ..

1st-person view would be cool, but I'd love an option to be able to switch between 1st and 3rd-person view....just so we've got a choice [and those who don't like 1st-person view aren't stuck with it]. :)

Well of course you wouldn't be stuck with it. I've actually NEVER encountered a game before now where you can't scroll the mouse wheel in and out of first person view. I don't use first person to actually fight, but I DO use it to look around and at stuff that I want to see more closely. I was baffled when I tried to zoom in and then my camera sort of glitched and stopped beside me instead of moving all the way in. I assumed it was a bug.

I also would love to see the ability to go first person. it makes the player feel like at least they have a choice to feel like they cam become more their character. not to mention better screenshots. I have no idea what the "dog fight" thing the last gentleman referred to is but I hear this from everyone of my friends who plays, and the forms are screaming it, so STO, please. give is 1st person POV. I don't think it distracts from normal play, and those who like 3rd person can set their cam. I like to play 1st person in almost any online game I play unless I'm fighting mobs. I like the feel and the feeling of virtual reality. really brings the game to life for me.

    Thanks for reading

i remember a patch adding "fps mode" in something, i remember trying it when the romulan special missions were being added, but i found it wasnt quite as i wanted to play, so i stopped using it

was going to try again recently, but now i cant find the keybinding to switch to that mode? am i blind, or was it bugged like i suspected, and they removed it because they failed to fix it?

i know i didnt dream it up, the memory is too clear, and not full of the random *beeeep* my dreams always have

    Ok that's kind of sweet.

If only the game mechanics make more sense for shooter mode... it's actually a big disadvantage when attempting to use kit powers (especially on a target other than the one you are shooting at).

You also look kind of stupid when you whiff on the targeting, which of course is not even possible in RPG mode.
