I love Star Trek Online, and I especially love how you made the ship combat much like Star Trek Bridge Commander. [The combat in Bridge Commander was awesome btw]
However I'd have to say one of the most disappointing aspects of Star Trek Online is not being able to zoom all the way into first person view.
Now, ship combat I'd mostly like to be able to zoom in for aesthetic reasons. Sure, I would use third person in ship combat but I would use first person alot to bring a sense of ... being there into the game. As of right now, I just don't feel like I'm really IN the game, which really ruins the Star Trek experience for me.
I would especially like to be able to zoom into first person on the ground. Looking at my character the whole time sitting there in front of me is highly annoying. To be honest it's a real eyesore having my character in front of the screen the whole time and not having any way to get him off there. I would LOVE to be able to zoom into first person view. In fact I find myself in ground combat leaning against walls so that the view goes into accidental first person view just so I can enjoy it for a few seconds.
Being able to zoom into first person view on the ground would also help me to feel more like I'm IN the game, rather than looking at it from a birds eye point of view.
So in the end, I would really like first person view. I'm not saying FORCE everyone into first person view. Just please let us have an option to zoom in if we want to? It wouldn't hurt anyone to at least make the option available. In fact I believe it would greatly add to the games realism aspect.
I want to say, in a more positive note... that I absolutely LOVE the ship to ship combat aspect of this game. I was worried that the ship combat was going to be point and click crud like Eve Online, and I was very pleased when I got into the game and found that it was like bridge commander.
I love the game, I just think that it would be really awesome to be able to zoom into first person view at will using the mouse wheel scroll.
Yup this has been requested since CB, but no official word from Devs has ever been given.
Give us the option to zoom to 1st person mode. I wouldn't think it would be that difficult. The game already does it if you move close to a wall and spin the camera just right.
Same goes for Space. The option to put the camera in front of the disc, like a "bumper cam" in car games, would be great. Or optional "camera placements" on top of the disc and in the deflector dish would be nice too.
Actually yesterday I was playing a ground mission, when something weird happened to the camera. I don't know how to replicate it, but a combination of crouch mode, nearby enemies and some boxes behind the captain, and my camera got stuck in a 1st person mode!
It lasted for a while, and I absolutely loved it. Unfortunately when I tried to take a screenshot, I accidentally hit Home instead (darn new keyboard with the buttons in the wrong places!) and the image was returned to the sad 3rd person mode.
But at least I saw that the 1st person mode is completely doable and fine in STO. Just implement it already!
I have no understanding of how 1st person view would be "programmed" into the game, but would it really be that difficult? As it stands now, when my back is to the wall and I try to pivot the camera behind my character during ground combat, the camera zooms all the way in and I am often left with a FPS view with only my gun being visible. Maybe there is some work to be done on it due to the "rolling" the ground combat utilizes.
It's completely possible BUUT the "vision" of STO is to keep it from feeling like a dog fight, and that's what first person would do. Anyway, that's my opinion. So it's certainly possible, but your're not going to get it.
I completely agree. I would have waited until this was changed to buy the game if I had known it wasn't first person. Options are nice to have, but I want to play in first person.
I have to say, Dogfighting is the strongest plus in this game. It's the ONLY reason Star Trek Bridge Commander was such a big hit. Being IN the fight, rotating your ship to avoid too much impact on one shield alone, firing your rear torpedos while zipping around and firing two more into the enemies hull. That is what made bridge commander awesome for so many years. I don't want a point and click game. I want a game where my movements matter. Where I am in charge. THAT makes me feel like I'm in the game.
If people don't want to dogfight, they can remain in third person view while we, who wish to play in first person can zoom into first person when we feel the need.
That was the weakness of Eve Online. They had point and click interface for moving around, and no control over movement of your ship. In my eyes that's what made that game fail so badly. I bought star trek expecting something different. Expecting to be immersed into the Star Trek universe, feeling like I'm apart of this world that I've always until now only been able to watch on television from a distance.
If you can't even zoom into first person to be a part of it, my vision is still incomplete, and this game does not fully complete that dream that I know most Star Trek fans have had for many, many years.
To be able to take part in the Star Trek Universe as if you are really there.
+1 For First Person View.. I actually was blown away I couldn't zoom into 1st person.. Especially in ground mode, like wtf?! Now when I'm fighting on the ground and zoom all the way in, my screen is covered with my ugly bent over TRIBBLE and I can't see to my left side!! I've died many times crouched zoomed in attacking an enemy with no clue I was being flanked from the left.. To add to the spoilage, when zoomed in full, it lags so much more because it has to display my character shooting as well lagging and many times crashing my computer..
A response would be nice to maybe clarify the reason we can't have first person?? Oh well.. I have 1 mission I havent done and its bugged so I guess I'm off to the same fleet action to repeat over and over until I level and get more missions...
First person is a must to keep me subbed. I cannot play like this. I mean, why not even the option to scroll in? These are the things that make or break an MMO.
Yea, I'd say ground assault is a must definitely. Space would be nice just for aesthetic reasons though. You can just about zoom in all the way in space anyway.
There are many times I want to go First Person on the Ground, because the camera angles are just annoying.
Last night, I was pinned by a Klingon against the wall, and I couldn't even see myself, so i didn't know if I was facing him or had my back to him. This wouldn't happen if it was First Person.
I simply cant believe how anyone could enjoy the select target and press a button method used at the moment in ground combat.
It is so so so depressingly boring, it will bring down sto if they dont sort it out, there is no skill whatsoever involved in selecting a target and pressing a keyboard key to fire at it, you need to be able to AIM MANUALLY at the TARGET.

This topic is NOT about that. This game is NOT that. You're looking for another game right now If you want a MMO with manual aim, get Fallen Earth or just play a FPS. Most MMOs do not have manual targeting. This will surely never change for STO amd I love it that away.

And Manual Aim may not be likely but I offered a bunch of ideas for various taggles to give it that FPS feel without the changing in game mechanics, combine this thread with my thread and it should take care of everywhere, both FPV and TPV will be on equal ground if they put these options into effect.
Actually, ship combat is much more like the Starfleet Command game series than Bridge Commander. I'd love to see Bridge Commander-like ship combat, sitting on my bridge and commanding my ship around with the viewscreen showing some kind of HUD like we've seen in the last Star Trek movie.... Ah, dreams....

I would also love this for much of the same reasons!
Cumbersome, cumbersome, cumbersome! I can see the need for 3rd person for consoles, but don't subject us PC users to the same encumbrances
I would pay extra not to have to use 3rd person mode...

Yeah, the game clearly is capable of handling a 1st person view. It might not be perfect at the moment, but I'll take it.
Just give us the ability to toggle the 1st person view on, and fiddle with the details (floating weapons etc) later.

it would be so much better i can stand see my self either plus Fist person view would be easyer to move around

I agree with the sentiments of others, it's much more immersive, and it's easier to move around sometimes.
Was surprised to find it wasn't there when I went to look for it (found this thread while looking for a way to turn it on).
