Delta Rising or Nah: Did you kill your alts and ship collections?

sekritagentsekritagent Member Posts: 510 Arc User
Is anyone else severely cutting back on alts (not simple farmer toons) and especially ship/weapons collections due to Delta Rising?

When reputations and the associated gear grinds came in, I designated 3 mains (Starfleet, Klingon, and Romulan) and dropped the other 6 back to alts since I tend to be a casual player now that so much of the game is setting timers or grinding mindless Zerg maps. However most of these alts still had healthy ship collections and the associated bridge officers needed to fly various builds.

Now with Delta Rising, I am consolidating ship collections on both my mains and my alts. I am trying to figure out if this was smart or panicky, but here was my rationale:
  • T5U Ship Costs: With T6 and Fleet T6 on the horizon, heavy investments in T5U and Fleet T5U feels like throwing good money after bad. I applaud Cryptic for giving any upgrade option at all (I wish they'd been more aggressive about leaving oldies like the Excelsior-R and D'Kyr behind), I am not really interested in upgrading any but the most iconic ships in my collections, and even then only on my mains. If T7 is introduced, I expect these ships will be left behind entirely.
  • Mk XIV Equipment Costs: Gearing characters and an average of 10 bridge officers per toon and you're talking serious grind...just makes more sense to prioritize if you're casual like me. Also the blatant money grab/crafting costs approach turned me off.
  • More Specializations Coming: With Intelligence as the first specialization and most of my toons being themed around that even before it was announced (check the username, since 2010), I am not feeling the need to explore more, aside from what future (op) abilities bridge officers on my 3 mains might get.
  • Pulling Back from STO: I'm definitely a little burned out from STO and trying to grind 9 characters aside from farming special events holds zero appeal, which I don't see changing. Even easier because we've got all the important canon ships in-game (I'd say we've gone too far with the playable Undine ships ) so I consider my "iconic" ship collections complete.

Did I make a good call or nah? What about you?
Delta Rising is the best expansion ever and the players love it! No, seriously! ...Why are you laughing so hard? :(

No, I have absolutely no reason too. Usually whatever the forum says to do, I do the opposite, seems to work out well that way.

Since I have a few other games I would like to return to once I have my time back, I am most likely going more casual for a while and will just continue like I am doing now.

I will pretty much ignore the upgrade system, start crafting dailies and maybe do the odd story mission before deciding which toons should move forward.

Highly likely I will upgrade a couple of ships though to get a flavour for Delta Rising and join in some of the new STF's. The bug hunt does sound interesting and if it is fun will likely spend a lot of time there. (Big fan of Starship Troopers here - (would you like to know more?))

^Basically the same thing for me.
    Was named Trek17.

Been playing STO since Open Beta, and have never regarded anything as worse than 'meh', if only due to personal standards.

Prior to S7, I didn't really have any mains - as I'd usually delete toons every 2-3 weeks because it was no big deal to gear them again. I had 4 character slots.
S7, I rerolled my guys and designated two toons as mains - 1 KDF & 1 Fed. I had four toons - no farming alts.
LoR, I added a Reman main - he took over. I had three levels of toons, main, submain, and alt. I had 10 toons - no farming alts.
EoY-2013, I deleted all but the Reman main and rerolled seven as alts. I had 8 toons - no farming alts.
During 2014, I added a Rom Eng as an alt. I had 9 toons - no farming alts.
Past week or so, I deleted the seven KDF and Rom Eng. Rolled a new Fed toon. Will be deleting the Reman in the next couple of days. I'll have one toon and 10 farming alts that just DOFF.

The KDF that I deleted, the reason I rolled seven of them was to have one for each of the ship types. The reason I had more character slots than toons was because I figured there would be new ship types that I would roll new toons for with Delta Rising. I'd be upgrading or buying new ships to replace the ships for those guys as time went on. As more and more information was released about Delta Rising, I decided that simply wasn't going to work for me.

So yeah, the one toon...perhaps a second ship for the trait, maybe unlocking the Fleet variant down the road...but that's pretty much it. If I even do that...I just don't know at this point.

It's like Cryptic is staging the intervention that I needed to get away from the game...tough love, eh? Lol, whatever...meh.

Considering that my ship collections consist of ships from tier I to tier IV as well as tier V, and I have too many to even reasonably think about equipping them all, spread out over 44 characters... no. Delta Rising did nothing to my ship collection.

I have 5 toons and I do not consider any of them as alts. I play certain toons more than others though because I do not have the time to play them all equally. I do not consider any of them to be farmers because I try to acquire as much dilithium on all my toons whenever I have the time to play. Of course my two KDF toons have an easier time going about it.

I am not apprehensive about DR as most people are because I do not own any C-Store basically due to not see much of an improvement between the free T5 / Mirror Universe ships to what is in the C-Store. Therefore, I actually welcome the level cap increase and the new ship tier. Sadly, though I am not really interested in any of the ships offered in the DR Operations Bundle. The Guardian Cruiser seems decent enough, but I prefer something just slightly more maneuverable (base turn rate of 7 or better). It's 6.5 turn rate is not that bad, but it also lowers maneuverability gained from bonuses, so the Guardian is a possibility. However, there is no T6 BoP for the KDF yet.

I don't really plan on pulling away from STO until maybe December 2014 or January 2015 'cuz I am thinking about buying X-Com: Enemy Within around that time. The goal is to beat that game on Impossible difficulty with the Ironman option turned on. But I plan on switching between playing both STO and X-Com. On the other hand whenever Fallout 4 is released, that game may consume all the free time I want to devote to playing video games....

Not deleted anyone, just re-purposed them.

Vulcan - keeps ACR as is, maybe gets a Guardian in a year or so. Will do DR, probably not DR PvE queues.
    Klingon - no difference.
Altmer - Depends on if a T6 Intrepid comes.
    Fed-Rom - " ". May get a T4 C-Store D'd so that she can use a D'd in the content she will play.
    KDF-Rom - same as Fed-Rom.
Saurian - She will use Mk XIV [Epic] equipment of specific mods, and every other power creep possible, but that is because she is using an NX. For her entire career. So, she actually needs it.
Gorn - VPvP only. Always was going to be, except now he gets a Varanus. :)
Sci Klink - I am uncertain, he was going to replace my Vulcan, but well, I suck at KDF play and gave up...

I agree that I feel better now after letting some of that stuff go! I was surprised how attached I was to some of the ships and the gear on them. It's a huge relief to be focused on a few things now as opposed to some massive mountain to climb...

I have 7 active toons (not alts) that were built to exercise different parts of the end-game experience, each of them with 3-4 UNIQUE ships, with various rep sets and T5 fleet items. One toon is getting free T5-U upgrades on a couple of his ships, but the other 20ish are almost all pay-to-upgrade, and that is without considering the gear costs. Once the reality of that sank in, I took the opportunity to start over in another game (MWO, since I used to play MW3 and MW4 some years ago), and now I give those people the money that I used to put into STO. When DR comes out I will probably run the one toon through the episodes if I can stand it (MMO low-investment makes for TRIBBLE single-player content), but the other chars are going into hibernation. I'm not going to delete anything, but I wont be doing anything with them except maybe DOFFing or the like. If my ships and gear were bound to account instead of char, I would probably consolidate them down.

    /+1

I will send all but one (and *maybe* a second) of my Characters (32, 10 farmers and some old fed chars) into cold sleep and see how far i can get with my remaining EC and Dilithium.
Beta, LTA, CE, Multiple preorder Versions, all Addon Packs except AoY, nearly all KDF/Rom and ~50% of all Fedships, over 25 LockboxShips, Endurer of Atari's "Year of Hell", but...

Nope, I hadn't any of mine.

I mostly focus on my Fed, KDF and Romulan. So 3 in all. Each one is at different areas of progression. So there is always something for me to do. I don't have any intention getting rid of my main 3.

Ships I have them, but mostly use them on Reps. As that is a great way to rotate them and play around with. However with the new ship level to gain as you level. I will more likely stick with 1 ship as my captain will become stronger with it. I already have my ships picked out they will mostly use. I still hope to squeeze in some time in my others as well some during the Reps.

I don't play enough during the week to get tired/burned out. So therefor I still play and keep coming back for more.

Hell, even my main toon is just a doff mission farmer at this point. I log on, fill the doff queues of my toons, and log off. Nothing else to do other than more grinding of the things I'm sick to death of.

DR comes, I'll play a bit of the story missions and start the new DR rep grind on my main toon (so I can get the 1/2 cost on the alts). But then a month later WoW expansion comes out and I'm sure I'll be sick of STO's grinding by then and take a break from STO's endless grindfest. Sure WoW is grinding too, but they generally do a hell of a lot more content on their expansions than Cryptic's 3-4 story missions and 5 STFs.

Saving all my refined dil to see what I need to do once DR arrives. I only have 3 toons; one main & two alts. I am thinking I might upgrade one ship per alt to T5U, and then see about getting a T6 for the main. I will definetly upgrade one ship on my main, plus any that are free. No plans to do away with any of them or their ships at this point, but subject to change. I am as worried about Cryptic making money as they are about me and what I have to go through to have fun playing this; the grinds are getting old, but this is what we have for Trek, so...

    Hello there.

I really don't understand (sorry my brain does not compute) how people suddenly are deleting toons.
I have 10 toons in total, all level 50, some of them not as much developed as my main ones (my tac toons) and i wouldn't consider deleting any of them, for any reason.

Been in this game many many years, after all the time invested in them? after all the ships they have? why i would delete them? i don't have much time to play now and it will take a loooong time for all 10 toons to be at level 60 and upgrades an all but.. i don't see this as a reason to delete them.

I'm sorry, i just don't get it (and even less, the panicking of some people). Expansion = delete toons. i didn't even thought about it after hearing friends talking about it and this forum.

The time i have for playing i will make my main toons to advance. The ones i don't have time, i won't. And it's ok, no problem. And it's no reason to delete anything. I would be incapable really, i don't know how people are capable of deleting toons with lockbox ships in them, with the price each of this ships have, and the investment. Are you ultra-rich? must be, for not caring.

Btw, no disrespect whatsoever with my words. Don't take it like it. Its just that my brain does not compute :D :P , someone should explain to me why they feel like this for the expansion, that they need to delete all the sudden all the hard work they've done, in so many years, ships, reputations, etc.. Im just incapable of this.

And after the expansion and if the cardassian faction is added some day (or any other race) i'm sure i will make more toons.

OP I am exactly where you are. 8 chars that I play and currently only planning to run 2 or 3 up until today. To me its an indication the game and the fun are dying for me as I really enjoyed all my toons. All decked out with ships, fleet and rep gear, etc. I'll probably poke around until the expansion hits then not entirely sure what I'll do after that.

That... if it's too much for me to bother with, I won't. Otherwise, I tend to hang onto things. So while I'll definitely be choosing an actual main from among my current 7 mains, and probably won't bother buying more character slots, the others are all decent enough to park somewhere for farming. Waste not want not and all that... though I apologize in advance for bringing the characters I have now into the CC Event or MU Event; I'm sure they'll scale it up and the alts... won't be. :P

I have a good number of alts, but I will probably abandon most by mid October. I am certainly not planning on deleting any toons, They may be fun later. I just don't think it will be fun to play more than 3 or 4 of my 24, and I certainly can't afford to make more than that viable.

What is keeping me from making any purchases or upgrades is that I don't know what T6 Fleet items will be .

Will they be new ships T6 ?
Will they be T6 versions of T5-U ships ?
Will they be T6 consoles or weapons or what ???

Cryptic could have saved us (and themselfs) so much headache if they just maintained the Regular / Fleet / Lockbox triangle of ships & items , instead of this crazy 6-7 types of ships to do DR with , which will totally confuse newbies and vets alike .

So I'm hanging on to my Dil until I see what T6 Fleet items bring .

    ?

You know Sekrit (tis Merkage here) I am really thinking about a cull.

Endless grinding has led me to change from the mindset of 'I'll just deal with it' to 'This is not worth my time'. All non-essential alts will likely be relegated to doffing duty.

My 9 chars remain as they were before. Once DR hits, the only ship in my collection that will be upgraded is the vetren destroyer, there's no reason to upgrade any other.
I don't have the XII weapons I want yet, so I have no reason to bother with upgrading gear, especially since the upgrade system doesn't seem to work on Honor Guard space sets, only the ground.
I'll probably play through the DR content once and then ignore it after that. If there's a STF to grind the Delta rep, I might do that. Otherwise DR has nothing worth considering.

    Nah, all done here.

I usually don't delete characters if for some reason, someday I might return.

That being said my ship collecting days are over, outfit collecting is over, throwing extra $10-$20 each month in this game is over and I have no intentions of upgrading T5s or the gear.

If I hang about it will be on 1 char for schitz and giggles.

Although I am more inclined to take my money elsewhere, the competition offers more bang for my buck.

Think about how long it took you to get your current levels to max out reputations and what not.

You wil probably need the same amount of time to get them to the new max of Delta Rising.

You can do it once, you can do it again. It involves doing what you already did - playing the game. If you like playing STO, that's great - you can keep playing it and earn new rewards that help you play it. If you don't like playnig STO - stop right there. You don't need Golds, Mark XIV gear, Tier 5 Upgrades, Tier 6 ships, intelligence BOFFs. You need another hobby or game.

For myself, I am just creating a bunch (well, 3) new alts. The XP event is ideal for that. I don't know when I'll rep them out. Maybe I'll do it immediately, maybe Delta Rising will prompt me to go back to older, "more maxed out" characters. It's probably okay.

And I get bored or frustrated again by STO, I'll just stop playing again, and may come back at a later point. Or never. Who knows?
