mine is pretty simple
if its more than about 20 bucks, im buying a new game instead.
if its about 15 to 20 bucks, i might consider it for a one off or annual
if its about 10 to 15 bucks, its a consideration, but it needs to be useful
if its about 5 bucks, thats the cost of a drink or two in the pub, if i think it will get me as much entertainment and have it spare, i might grab it
how this applies to sto? honestly... not well.
they blocked functionality of the 5 bucks purchase in arc. + there is jack all for kdf in that price range anyway. hence no spend for 6 months.
there is next to nothing in the 10 to 15 bucks range either...
there is some stuff in the 20 bucks range... but anyone buying a marauder fdc is an idiot. or there is the buy 1/3 or a package deal that gets you questionable value for your investment and means if you want the set abilities you are lookin at an extra 10 bucks.
i cant even do something as simple as use sms to make a purchase. which doesnt matter really, because there is nothing in any kind of 'impulse buy' category worth looking for.
how about you guys?

I personally tend to spend my extra on games, considering I dont drink, Dont smoke, and assuming my bills are paid and everything in the bag. I don't mind dropping my spare 20-100 if i got it on something ill use for a few months of fun.
If I still got bills to pay though or things i need, Well the game shoves off for as long as it takes before I spend money on it.
Depends on content and context. My best deals received are the ships. The more characters an account has the more usefull an account unlock becomes if you only pay once.

I was Klingon before Klingon was cool.
In the past I almost always had one or two sub games.
Now that those hardly exist I tend to toss 5-10 bucks a month or so at my current F2P game I'm playing. Most F2P games have desireable things at that range but STO really doesn't. I tend to spend other people's money in STO as I am a decent farmer.
Mine is very simple too.
I go to Starbucks 3-4 times a week and have a large caramel latte and a scone of some type. That is around $7.00, or $20.00-$30.00 per week. I do not find it unreasonable to spend on my gaming hobby in a month what I spend on coffee in a week.
STO is about my Liberated Borg Federation Captain with his Breen 1st Officer, Jem'Hadar Tactical Officer, Liberated Borg Engineering Officer, Android Ops Officer, Photonic Science Officer, Gorn Science Officer, and Reman Medical Officer jumping into their Jem'Hadar Carrier and flying off to do missions for the new Romulan Empire. But for some players allowing a T5 Connie to be used breaks the canon in the game.
Personally I take pride in doing the most with the least, maybe subscribe for a month to get the 'former subscriber' unlocks but otherwise be a deadbeat. Any idiot can throw money at a problem, but to do a lot with little-to-nothing yet be almost as good as the people who spend hundreds of dollars, thats just beautiful.
Originally, I just spent money on things that stood out for me that I desired, staying in the $20-30 dollar range.
But after the last few years, my desire to spend money on any online game is pretty much gone. In that time, how I perceived the gaming industry has drastically changed, and I am more cautious about where I spend my money. I take into consideration what I purchase and where that money goes, and how it could potentially influence the industry, positively or negatively. Less games have stood out to me and there are less good developers out there worthy of supporting. More companies seem hell bent on testing their luck to see how far they can push the consumer before consumers start crying foul or start boycotts. Overall, I'm just [REDACTED] tired of it.
I place more value in the purchases of full games (physical or digital) more than cash shop items that cost as much as a full game, or several games. Cash shop items that lose value when the MMO tanks, whereas games that I've bought 10-20 years ago still retain their value to me and are still accessible whenever I wish to play them.
15 a month if there's something I want, that's how much it typically is on a pay to play game so I feel no buyers remorse. It's also only if I want something that month, been a fairly decent system for me
I can do a lot with very little. I am extremely patient and have no issues making the exchange work for me using other people's money. That alone means I want very little that can be gained via Zen only.
However, when I do get the inclination to spend real money on STO, it's generally because I feel like I want to reward them for something I agree with.
If they make an announcement I like? I may buy some Zen to say thank you.
If they make a trend of announcements I dislike? I generally don't give them anything at all.
If I see someone from the Cryptic team being extremely helpful or informative on the STO forums? I might buy Zen to say thank you.
I find out Suricata was hired by Cryptic? Well, hey. My wallet might be loosening up if I see some MSD art assets being added to the game.
I look at buying Zen as a reward system for PWE/Cryptic doing things I agree with. Not because I want anything they're selling, per se. I try to coincide my Zen purchases with behavior and decision-making that is more in line with my own.
I bought the Mogh battlecruiser not because I wanted it, but because I wanted to pad their statistics that showed people were buying KDF ships. I still haven't used it to this day. But I know that blip is somewhere on their datasheets.
If I could attach a small message to my zen purchases to inform PWE why I'm buying Zen, I'd like it even more.
"Tacofangs was very helpful in informing us the art team would make an attempt at connecting trophies to the Voyager interior, here's $20."
a sub would cost me 15 bucks, and that price hasn't changed in over 10 years. just factoring in basic inflation a sub should cost 20-25 bucks. it's not unfair to be willing to pay that much for a game.
I don't mind dropping $20 every other month or so if there is something I want. That said, it has been a long time since I have spent money on STO, since LoR I think. Nothing has appealed to me since. With the requirement to spend zen to upgrade my zen ships coming, it will be a very long time before I spend another penny on this game, if ever.
My ethos is: Never spend money that you can use differently. For all things in life. However on occasion, I've been given gamestop gift cards. I use these to buy ultimate game cards (or well I used to). I use these to buy zen. At the moment, I have more than $100 in gamestop gift card money. However, without ultimate game cards, I have no way to buy zen. Until the gamestops around me start offering the perfect world cards, I can't buy anything. :P

money is hard to come by i make do with what i got, on the chances i do get some money come along for non critical means like games i take the time to look at what i really want to get rather then a spur of the moment action thats hit and miss, however usually i save that money because it could come and bite me in the TRIBBLE.
whats this got to do directly with sto? it should be in ten forward.
T6 Miranda Hero Ship FTW. Been around since Dec 2010 on STO and bought LTS in Apr 2013 for STO.
All depends on the fun I have while playing, so new content like LOR forces my wallet to open, cause it was a nice addition to the game - so the big pack was mine. Since then nothing catched my attention enough..sadly. When Dyson arrived I wanted my money back..besides..

This is me these days. And in my opinion it's the best way to be..... But each to their own.
Since I don't play frequently enough, I don't pay to play anymore. Having said that, I will spend money on what I deem to be worthy for my enjoyment. With two kids I squirrel away a few bucks (literally) a paycheck until I have want I "need" to spend on STO. Then I spend it.
Since I'm at the top of my game, then it's typically for Keys so I can sell the LB contents for EC to get the more rare stuff I want but didn't get from the chance of opening the Box.
This is a fairly simple and easy plan since I only have one toon and fly one ship

True. Now that Cryptic has let the shoe drop that ship purchases are just "gear" I'm really leery of ever buying a ship again. Really, at this point I really am weighing continuing to play.
When I was just getting started, and uneducated in the STO economy, I spent extra on Zen for services & keys. Now that I have seen what the dev's continue to do to the game, I'm pretty much sticking to my Gold sub, since it comes with the Zen stipend. The dil/Zen exchange rate has increased 50% since my first 'toon, so I'll just save my Zen for keys, and hope for the best.
I have neither bought a ship, nor plan to...

My ethos is simple. I reward developers for doing good work.
^THIS!^
Since I'm relatively young, not married yet and don't have a family of my own I can afford to separate some funds for what I call "gaming entertainment budget" for my gaming needs. I don't, however, waste it just because I can; like the poster I quoted said - I reward developers for doing good work that I feel it's worth of my financial support. Or just keep piling money in that "fund" for something better along the way if I don't feel what I'm currently getting satisfies my norms for quality entertainment.
But I look at its value more than anything. What am I going to get out of it, how long will it last me(in terms of hours playing whatever it is I'm buying) and how will it effect my gaming experience overall.
In general however, I've been spending less and less on F2P games. This is mainly because of lack of value when I compare what I could spend with another game entirely(not F2P).
I have a PS4 also and to get a new triple A title game these days cost around $60-$70 and I keep that in the back of my mind when making any purchases.
Retired. I'm now in search for that perfect space anomaly.

My PvE/PvP hybrid skill tree
I haven't spent real money on STO since it went f2p. Every update is one step forward, two (or more) steps back.
You reward devs? Text is rather cheap I suppose

I spent quite a lot on GW2 until their "feature update" in April.

Non-cash options exist to get the remaining shinies.
However, I will drop cash on the game from time to time if I feel like it.
And, purely for me, the overwhelming quality expressed from cryptic that opens my wallet, is generosity.
Alt discounts for event ships and giveways make it easy for me to spend money. I enjoy spending that cash.
And, as this is entertainment, if theres a significent element of non-fun about a cash purchase I wont make it.
But I look at its value more than anything. What am I going to get out of it, how long will it last me(in terms of hours playing whatever it is I'm buying) and how will it effect my gaming experience overall.
