Lag Making STO Unplayable

eurosideurosid Member Posts: 10 Arc User
Sorry, I'm very much a noob with network issues. I have no idea how to interpret these results. The game has become unplayable for me.

I can usually get logged in, but play is always freezing with the "Server Not Responding" message. Often the running time will go beyond 100 seconds. Sometimes I get DC'd after a minute or so.

It happens enough, I don't dare play any missions with other people. I don't want to TRIBBLE them by lagging out for 2 minutes in the middle. No STF for me. Or any other team events.

So, here's tracert:

Have you tried restarting your router and/or modem first?
Yes, I'm that Askray@Batbayer in game. Yes, I still play. No, I don't care.

Yes, I've rebooted and done a router reset.

I've done "ipconfig /release" and "ipconfig /renew". Also, "ipconfig /dnsflush".

    None of that helped.

Do you have a firewall built into your router? It shouldn't be showing request time outs right from the start (which is a little odd)

When looking at netstat the results should be -

    Column 1: ~300-500 KB/sec
    Column 2: ~20kb/sec
    Column 3: ~300- 500kb/sec

So you're not doing so well there =\ I'm also getting some bizzare results trying to do tests from my location to you (it's not leaving cali)

Is this a new symptom as in today or has this been going on for a few days?

It's been for the last week or so. I don't know too many details about the router, it's fairly new. It's supplied by Comcast, and has the WiFi built in. We've had it about a month.

I'll check to see if there's a firewall, and what settings are available.

So, there's not much in the way of options. There is a Firewall. It is set to "Typical Security (Medium)".
    The description is as follows:
    Typical Security (Medium)

    LAN-to-WAN: Allow all.

WAN-to-LAN: Block as per below and enable IDS.

    IDENT (port 113)
    ICMP request

    Peer-to-peer apps:
    kazaa - (TCP/UDP port 1214)
    bittorrent - (TCP port 6881-6999)
    gnutella- (TCP/UDP port 6346)
    vuze - (TCP port 49152-65534)

I don't know what that means. There's a "Custom" option, with the following options that can be turned on or off:
    Custom Security

    LAN-to-WAN: Allow all.

WAN-to-LAN: IDS Enabled and block as per selections below.

Block http (TCP port 80, 443)
    Block ICMP
    Block Multicast
    Block Peer-to-peer applications
    Block IDENT (port 113)
    Disable entire firewall

Since it appears that ICMP (Internet Control Management Protocol) is blocked, 'Trace Route' which uses it is blocked as well...

It doesn't look like its a firewall/port issue, because the 'Net Test' is making a connection with the diagnostic server, but is showing a connection quality issue of some kind from its inconsistent throughput results...

So this means you really have no other choice but to contact Comcast Tech Support, and ask their assistance in diagnosing your connection problems with the STO servers...

I've been having intermittent problems that helps when i reset the ip during those spikes. I suspect it's a server somewhere... for me last week it was Eastlink's main servers getting flooded
