Whereas I suspect it is merely a rumor, the concept does seem to jive with the story played out in SWTOR in the ruins west of the capital where the shades of several Darths are quite restless and interested in reasserting power, making even the living Darths nervous. Of course, that's SWTOR, which possibly has even less canonicity than the recently dethroned E.U. material.
Ahh yes, the Dark Temple. It caused me a lot of grief back in my level 13 days.
But anyways...
I personally don't like the idea of Palpatine's ghost as the next villan. I mean seriously, he was the bad guy throught episodes 1through 6 and TWC. He reamained the big bad guy for decades and he had a fitting end that allowed Darth Vader to fulfill the prophecy of the chosen one and bring balance to the force. Bringing him back just makes Vader's death kind of pointless like: "I am Anikan Skywalker and I am dead because I threw my master down a big elevator shaft and restored balance to the force making my death heroic. Now JJ is here and had my master live on as a ghost making my death pretty damn pointless!"
You thought I, Jedi was bad, you should see the books it was written as a fix fic for, that being KJA's Jedi Academy Trilogy, the one with the star-killing Marty Stu, Kyp Durron, in it. And I'm pretty sure the book you're thinking of is Darth Maul: Shadow Hunter.
Yeah, I was a serious collector of the novels but Legacy of the Force killed it for me. I think the last one I bought was Death Star, and that was more for the author than the logo on the cover.
Yes, that's the book, Master Bondara was a bad-TRIBBLE  And ugh, Kyp Durron *shudder* I never really got into the books, as the fact then were consider non-canon AU put me off getting invested in them, and in that regard, I hope JJ doesn't just disregard all the EU stuff to write whatever he wants with Ep VII, but I strongly suspect he will
It would be nice if episode VII took place at a much later time perhaps 100+ years after the events of Return of the Jedi. The New Republic has flourished, but the government has started to become lax. Pockets of corruption has start to crop up that will eventual lead to the downfall of the New Republic or at least severely threaten it's existence.
The "ghost of Palpatine" could still be a viable villain (but not the primary villain) since the essence of powerful Jedi and Sith can linger in the physical world.
Anywaste, too early to speculate and not worth the effort to do so. It will be what it will be....
Palpatine can move his ghost from clone to clone to ensure his own immortality so the villain being his ghost isn't that far of a stretch. Now I want to see true Force Storm on the big screen.

Since they ejected all the expanded universe material out of canon for the new movies...you won't.
Only 10? What internet filters are you using (besides ad-block)? :P
So... Congress and Parliament are run from the internet? It all makes sense now! :P
In relation to the rumour... it is from LatinoReviews; a less than reliable source, shall we say? I've seen them come out with hundreds of 'rumours' that turned out to be 500% false.
Come on, I doubt JJ would have had the SW:EU purged only to immediately go to one of its most famous arcs for the first in a sequel trilogy. If he takes anyone from the Original Trilogy as a villain, I would hope that it would be Thrawn, as he was also a major force before ROTJ, unless the comics/novels running alongside the Original Trilogy were purged too, but I think it may have only been everything after ROTJ.
Either way, I don't think Palpatine is coming back... yet.
For all Abrams' faults with Trek, I think he will do legit good with Star Wars, especially with the creative team he has to keep him from nuking the fridge.
Good news from the JJ Front He got canned on doing the new Star Wars they got a better director that will leave the fridge alone
Unless of course it is Michael Bay then then fridge will Transform
Just wait we'll end up with, an angry Nalumor Spice miner named Oren, Whose Homeworld of Nalumus Blew up from a supernova so he stole a blue matter device, and destroyed Coruscant with it,
Got sent back in time and tries to erase Luke and Leia From the timeline instead of stopping the disaster like a sane person......... :P:D

In fairness to Nero, he was frakking insane. Of course his plan didn't make any sense.

Personally, they could just film the Thrawn trilogy and I'd be a happy camper. Those books were awesome. Thrawn deserves some actual screen time, he was so good in the books that he made it into Lucasarts' TIE Fighter game!
Man, now I'm all nostalgic for that too. TIE Fighter was great. XD

This character is why I don't play my Romulan any more. Tovan Khev is NOT my BFF! Get him off my bridge!
Yeah, that was the Dark Empire comics. Another entry in the Superweapon of the Month club spearheaded by Kevin J. Anderson. You thought JJ was bad? At least he didn't have a Marty Stu blow up an inhabited star system and get off with a warning.
The X-Wing series* and anything by Matt Stover and Tim Zahn are way better, and NJO starts weak but drastically improves in quality after about Star by Star. Coruscant Nights is also pretty good (barring some continuity hiccups due to a last-minute decision to change the date at which it was set), and the geopolitical military thriller parts (Leia's and Han's plot) of the Black Fleet Crisis are fun (Luke's plot is TRIBBLE, though). Steve Perry's Death Star was also really fun to read.
I never liked NJO. The Vong just didn't feel like the belong into Star Wars. Not even when they were later tied to the force. And all the villain decay... *sigh*
Zahn's novels were the best, and the X-Wing series was really enjoyable, too.
* In general I rate the stuff that leaves the neverending Jedi/Sith nonsense in the background and focuses more on regular people to be loads better than the rest of it.
I also like the Jedi/Sith stuff and exploration of the Force's philosophy, but I think you really need human "regular" characters as imortant protagonists and antagonists, too. The prequels lacked someone like Han Solo. A non-foce-sensitive character without special gifts or heritage.
I think for kids, Anakin was probably someone to identify with, but for the grown-up Star Wars fans, there wasn't really someone to releate strongly to. Padm
Star Trek Online Advancement: You start with lowbie gear, you end with Lobi gear.
In fairness to Nero, he was frakking insane. Of course his plan didn't make any sense.
Also, he learned from the best. Picard didn't move back to a point in time where he could just stop Soran and avoid the Enterprise being destroyed, no ,he went only shortly back before he left, so he barely has a chance to stop Soran.

That is not how bringing balance to the Force works. The Dark Side brings the Force out of balance. Destroying it (ish) brings it back into balance.
