I just bought a new T5.5 fleet ship last night, so what do I know.
A couple of things. First even though X2 is ~6 weeks away, we don't know much about the upgrade process or how long it will take to level up from 50 to 60 (though I fully expect there will be folks chugging Red Bull doing it with 2-3 days of launch). So I think the non-doomsaying advice is buy what you want, but don't go crazy. For example -- maybe a full set of romplas beam arrays for a cruiser may not be the best way to spend your dil , but a few select embassy or spire consoles would be fine. I would also not pay 1 million plus EC for some MK XII VR stuff off of the exchange (some of that stuff was always overpriced in my mind anyways -- go compare MK XI blue flow caps to a MK XII purple flow caps for example.
STO/Cryptic/PWE-I have ALLLLL the faith in the world that the new expansion is gonna be a MASSIVE $$$$ sink-with that said, the last expansion MK XII stuff took a while to get into the system, Mk XI gear was the new shiney for a bit.
IF and WHEN MK XIII/IV stuff shows up, unless you are HEAVLY into PvP, MK XII gear is gonna be more then good enuff for normal day to day PvE stuff.
I still run puuurple MK XI stuff on some of my PvE ships, cant even tell the difference in normal game play. Mk XII will still be the staple for a good while because of the shear cost that MK XIII/IV gear will cost in mats/EC's/$$$ and time to craft.
So in closing, enjoy the fire sale on MK XII gear while it lasts...cause when its gone...peeps will be paying TOP $$$ for what's left because they will NOT be able to attain a full set of the newww and shiney MK XIV for 2-6mos due to various reasons.
IMHO

Cryptic needs to let us know something about how we're to be handling this. I've only got 4 toons, but others in the fleet I'm in have 9-10.
Look at weapons alone. On average ships have 7-8 weapons. We'll use 7x10 toons. That's 70 new weapons we'll be compelled to replace. Do you have to? No, but when we bought them we spent the resources to get the best available, so more then likely, those of us that do want the best will get it. Weapons are currently 10,000fc/8500 dil. thats 70,000-80,000fc and 59,500 dil per ship that's just wasted unless they put in some system of upgrading. I can see paying the difference in the new and old gear. And the code already exist within the game. The Jem Hadar upgradeable space set comes to mind. And here we're only talking weapons. Move on to 10 console ships with 50kfc slotted gear. So we pay 500,000fc for vendor trash? Per ship? Come on......
Upgrading would be acceptable. But don't leave us hanging and not even wanting to play the game (and I mean continuing building or building anything new which is the point of the game). We're like stuck in Cryptics version of the DMV. No answers, simply droning on quietly as we wait our turn.
Cryptic needs to inform us even in part about plans so we as players aren't stuck in limbo for 6 weeks.

Of course they are viable gear. But mk10 plasmas are far WORST than mkXII, by far lol. So, its the same story over and over again.
People confuses "to be able to" with "to be able to do better".

Except a huge dil cost to upgrade your items, and probably a "fast" way in the Cstore.
