I do not know where to put this as it is a forums issue, but the thread lists are causing both Fire Fox and Internet Explorer to think that they have crashed. I restarted the system and I still have this problem.
The web browser gives me a crash message if I stay on the thread list for too long. Anyone else having this issue? Was there a recent change to the forums?

I just had a "crash" while looking at a thread. So it may not be limited to the thread lists. I have browsed other sites with out "crashing".
I have not have any updates on my end except for on Fire Fox yesterday. Fire Fox was worked fine with the forums yesterday after the update, but not today.
Anyways, I am asking if anyone else has this issue or if there was a forums update so that I can narrow the field and figure out where the issue is coming from.

Nothing like that on my end. Have you tried viewing the forum in a different browser?

I have "crashes" on both Internet Explorer and Fire Fox.

And so far only happened once today.

Odd, so I'm the only known one with the "crashes". Odd because I had no known changes on my end to start this.

Just as a recap, I would be browsing the forums and boom, crash message, and the browser restarts/closes.

Most browser crashes are caused by malfunctioning extensions, addons, or toolbars.

Sounds like its taking too much memory and crashing, I would look at your add-ons.

    Thanks for the advice.
I removed 2 snotty programs from IE and Windows: Coupon Companion *eww*, and Sweetpacks *eww*. Now STO forums is working on both IE and Fire Fox again. I wonder why Sweetpacks came from the grave like that... I removed it from Fire Fox months ago.

It wasn't Sweetpacks; apparently the issue persists.
I also have all my existing plug-ins on "ask to enable". Why I am having this problem all the sudden is beyond me.

I'd suggest cleared all your cache in both IE and firefox, if that doesn't work, reset IE, and uninstall and reinstall firefox. I'd also look into junkware on machine, sweetpacks is rarely alone.

K, thanks for the advice, cleared cache and fingers crossed.

Edit: It occurred to me that I never used IE much till now.

run the usual programs to eliminate invalid registries from the system , correct errors and defragmentation. all those can have an impact on your system and its ability to work correctly, same is true to run various anti spyware, malware and root-kit programs.

Indeed, sounds like you got invasive Adware and/or malware on your browsers. There are some really good free ones on the internet, unfortunately due to the forum rules I can't say who or provide you links. But if you do quick browse, you will find it.

First off, reset into safemode. The use the antispyware, and keep the programs for future incursions. Along with BHO remover and monitors so you can easily notice something being added that shouldn't be there. After that's done, run a virus scan and research on the internet for those nasties to make sure you got rid of everything, especially from your root menu and startup files.

And lastly, stay off improper websites. :P

Recommend a full system scan with any of the following: AVG, Kaspersky, Spybot Search & Destroy, Ad-Aware, Comodo, Windows Defender, Avira, SuperAntiSpyware.

You can also test to see if this happens on Chrome or another browser. (If you don't want to install it, you can get it in a self-contained folder that you can delete afterwards from portableapps.com)

Mind, any, but try not to run concurrent virus scanning software suites together.

I have done a full scan. Cleaned up some mud in the temp net files and way more mud in windows folder.
I go to "today's post" under STO forums, looked at the list for a bit-then-boom, crash message/closed browser.
I've been other places and didn't have any issues at all. Just the one site I've been flacked about. On both a browser I use, and on I don't. Process of elimination is pointing a finger, and it's not pointing at my computer. At the same time, no one else is having the issue. So the finger is not pointing at the web site either. Ima gonna try it on ma PS3.

So I did. worked fine (besides the fact I can't log in), then I noticed how the PS3 doesn't show preview boxes by the courser. So I go back to the computer, move the courser in a manner to rapidly request preview boxes, then boom, source of the crashes!
Anyone know of another site that uses the tooltip feature? I need to proceed is using process of elimination to rout out the origin of the problem.

Edit: Fire Fox's new tab glossary uses tooltips. I messed with it, but no crash. Also, waiting on the STO forums "today's post" page does not trigger the crashes.
Edit: Tried messing with the tooltips of STO forum on another computer, no crash. I still could use a link to another site that uses tooltips so I can see if this only happens on STO forums or not.

I notice sifting through the site code that the tooltip stuff is using javascript..... this could be a javainstall issue on your system. May want to consider uninstalling ant and all installed java installs on your system and installing the latest version.

I searched my computer for Java, no Java. Thanks for the info though.

Edit: I found that Yahoo Mail uses tooltips, I messed about in there for a minute, no crash. The tooltips were short though.
So I conclude that STO forum's overlengthy tooltips are crashing my, and only my, web browsers.

Highly doubt it. I would recommend you do a malware scan of some type. There's plenty of anti-malware suites available. Sounds like you have some type of browser hijack or other type of malware designed to make your life miserable. Antivirus scans are fine, but I would also do a complete malware scan with something like Malware Bytes or another program. That one I mentioned is not free, but it *is* a good, solid anti-malware program.

I would also suggest you install things with the custom feature and not any recommended or "fast install" options. Oftentimes, you think you are only getting the program that you downloaded installed (ie: adobe flash player), when in reality you are also getting various types of ad-ware or malware in the forms of browser add-ons, search tools, etc. etc. Always use custom installation on everything, read what it says - decline everything but the program you wanted to install in the first place.

    Good luck.

In Mozilla Firefox you can check using Tools > Add-ons, and then the Plugins tab. That'll show things like Flash or Java. And you can find out if they're up to date by going here:

I have gone to that conclusion through experimentation and process of elimination. Look at my other posts to see what I have done. You'll also see that I have done a full system scan (didn't mention it's of it's own OS). Thanks for the info, but I've already done that.

Edit: if anyone has a link to a site with lengthy tooltips, please share. I'd like to experiment.

Thanks for the info, I looked, all I have (as plug-ins) are Shockwave Flash, Quick Time, Nvidia 3d Vision, and Adobe Acrobat. They are also on "ask to activate", and didn't activate them.

Full system scan ...what type of scan? Anti-virus with Windows Defender? If that is the case, my suggestions above remain valid. But, I've already given my opinion through my personal experiences to you.

    Good luck.

A scan using Avast. The boot time scan. Supervised it through the deletion of 56 files. Most of them were suspected ad ware.

I'd check multiple scanners.... as a break-fix tech I've learned not to rely on any AV scanners, nothing is 100% effective..... Really if it were me I'd be pulling up process explorer and autoruns, but they require an educated eye to be of much use.

There are 4 types of common malicious software. Each type has it's own scanning/removal process. There are also multiple variations of uncommon malicious software that I won't touch upon (rootkits, trojans and the like).

    Adware
    Spyware
    Malware
    Virus

Anti-virus does one thing really well: eliminates and protects from *viruses*.

The other 3 types are generally lumped together and most common of each of these last three types will *never* register as a virus. These are more commonly software add-ins like toolbars, search tools, etc.

Anti-virus software and scanning (such as Avast is), is not enough by itself.

I work in the cable industry and install, maintain and trouble shoot commercial networks and products. I've been working in the computer industry for over 25 years. I do know a little bit about these sorts of things.

Again, my suggestion: Purchase, or find a free version of, some type of anti-malware program. I already listed one that I use above and shall not repeat myself here. Trust me, the symptoms you are describing sound like some type of browser hijacking malware. I can guarantee if you've never used anti-malware program on your PC, that you have some sort of infestation of these types of programs on your PC.

Take my advice, or not... either way, Good Luck.

I have done a virus scan using AVG and attempted to use Malwarebytes. I cleared some mud up with AVG, and although Malwarebytes is flummoxed by simple documents and cannot scan them even though it had been trying for 8 hours, I was able to clean out some additional slime.

Edit: STO forum list tooltips still crashes Fire Fox. Experimentation yields that the presence, not the tooltips, of the STO forums crashes IE.

Probably MBAM v2...... we tend to use MBAM for a final sweep after a breakfix just to clean out remnant files, but still are using 1.75 in our toolkit..... v2 is a bit cludgy.

My attempts to download Malwarebytes v1.75 have failed and now Fire Fox is spontaneously closing. Gonna run another boot time scan. This is getting pretty bad.

Edit: I caught a browser hijacker just then. REALLY!? I JUST CLEANED YOU AND ... you just get real sick all the sudden.
