Here's the jist of it:
P1: "Questions"
Smirk: "I don't know"
We should all do Iconians drinking game as we listen....wait nvm. We'd die.
My liver is still recuperating from the last drinking game.
So, when is the Priority One fundraiser for transcribed podcasts?
I figure if you have enough listeners who don't mind donating a few bucks to send your crew to Las Vegas, you have enough listeners to send some money so those of us with hearing difficulties can be informed by your show.

Though I have the opposite problem (bad eye sight), I think having it transcribed would be awesome for ones with hearing problems. When I try to do things on the computer, sometimes it is hard to read it. If I had the money, I would donate to support this.

I have to be honest, after the first part about how they are actually trying to fleece enough money from hapless listeners for them all to go on holiday to Vegas, followed by a shameless advert for a cosplay provider, i stopped listening.
Why is this even a thing?
" Experience is a hard mistress, she gives the tests first, and the lessons after... "
Not for my post i hope. I'm just telling it how it is. $4000+ for 3 people to go to Vegas for 4 days? And use twitter? Wow, the hardship.
Good work if you can get it i guess...
I assure you, we'll be doing more than just using Twitter. Did you followed our convention coverage in 2012 and 2013? We work for our listeners much harder than limiting our content to just 140 characters.
Oh, and I encourage everyone to have a gander at our backer rewards. We made certain that if we were going to ask for our loyal listeners to financially support our coverage of #STLV on their behalf, that we had some sweet SWAG to grant them bragging rights among their trekkie friends.
Oh? Please let me know, I'd love to give it a try -- Will it identify more than one voice and split them accordingly?

A HUGE "Thank You" to all you hapless listeners who let themselves be fleeced by Elijah and the gang so they can take hours of audio and video recordings that we'll edit and release for the benefit of everyone who can't make it to STLV '14! Without you, none of this would be possible!
Thanks! I'll be sure to give it a shot at some point!
Please do.
It does say it's there to assist in the manual annotation of speech, but how far that assistance goes is beyond me. It is open source, so no license fee is required. I'm sure there are some other commercial products out there if you dig deep enough.
There are many STO players who would likely be appreciative of the effort.
You guys are doing a great job! Keep up all of the hard work. I hope all of you make it to Vegas. You have worked so hard for all of us listeners and we appreciate all that you do for us every week!
Have you ever considered AWS (Amazon Web Services) Mechanical Turk. From the website:
"Amazon Mechanical Turk is a marketplace for work that requires human intelligence. The Mechanical Turk web service enables companies to programmatically access this marketplace and a diverse, on-demand workforce. Developers can leverage this service to build human intelligence directly into their applications.
While computing technology continues to improve, there are still many things that human beings can do much more effectively than computers, such as identifying objects in a photo or video, performing data de-duplication, transcribing audio recordings or researching data details. Traditionally, tasks like this have been accomplished by hiring a large temporary workforce (which is time consuming, expensive and difficult to scale) or have gone undone.
Mechanical Turk aims to make accessing human intelligence simple, scalable, and cost-effective. Businesses or developers needing tasks done (called Human Intelligence Tasks or HITs) can use the robust Mechanical Turk APIs to access thousands of high quality, low cost, global, on-demand workersand then programmatically integrate the results of that work directly into their business processes and systems. Mechanical Turk enables developers and businesses to achieve their goals more quickly and at a lower cost than was previously possible."
and
"The following are examples of companies taking advantage of the power of the Mechanical Turk workforce to understand and intelligently respond to different types of data:
Podcast editing and transcription"
Now, this will cost some money depending on the length, but if enough people see the benefit and are willing to fund it... Heck if PWE were smart, they would step up and make it happen and reap the benefits and good will!!
Maybe this can help out.. Worth a mention any way.

You, too, welcome our new P1 overlords?
Transcripts, it's not hard.
And why on earth ask Smirk about game issues?
An interview with him where he lays out some of the thinking behind things like thread merging, why no forum announcement for the key sale, would be more illuminating.
In their defense they are one of the better podcasts out there bringing up to date STO and Star Trek news and updates. I enjoy listening to them they have an informative and fun format and they do listen to their listeners and community in general.
You don't have to donate if you can't or don't wish to but you also don't have to knock their efforts. And as for the hearing impaired issue, I'm sure they'll read this and perhaps try to look into this and correct it if they can. Perhaps transcripts of their podcasts or so.
Anyway, I support them and hope to listen to their Convention coverage.

It's pretty hard -- especially when we can spend upwards to 3 hours w/ Al Rivera. Would you like to volunteer to help us get transcripts done?

I'm one of those that would appreciate the effort; I rarely listen to the P1 podcasts, but I'd happily read through a transcript. Just my two cents worth
With each passing day I wonder if I stepped into an alternate reality. The Cubs win the world series. Donald Trump is President. Britain leaves the EU. STO gets a dedicated PvP season. Engineers are "out of control" in STO.
Would you play Foundry missions that were spotlighted by Star Trek Online and tied in story between Featured Episodes?
Yes I would, but I also have a few ideas for the implication of such a program:
During episode 182 Captain Smirk was focusing on the current (Iconian) featured episodes and was negating the fact that we have multiple FE series to create missions for. I would love missions around the 2800 series, or the Breen series. There are also gaps in the primary storyline for all 3 factions that could be filled with community authored missions.
Furthermore, I support the idea of repurposing the old exploration clusters as foundry hubs, they could create a foundry challenge to write missions for the specific clusters, with each cluster having its own species requirements/limitations.
Ah come now. It's almost like you're not taking this seriously
Oh, I take it very seriously. And I did say that I'd be happy to try any automated services that would accurately transcribe interviews.
You mentioned you ran a company that required transcripts. Was this company for profit?
Perhaps you are unaware that Priority One Podcast is built entirely by volunteers?
The following is our official statement on the matter of transcriptions...
We have given serious consideration to transcribing our shows in response to the previous requests we have read in our forum threads. However, Priority One has neither the internal talent nor the available funding to commit to this service. No one within our organization has the time or the skills to transcribe our shows efficiently. Our research into professional transcription services indicates that a ballpark figure of $100/episode MIGHT be enough.
Each and every one of our formidable capabilities as a podcast team comes 100% from the donation of time, talent, and treasure. If audio needs editing, somebody sits down at a computer they bought with their own money and takes time out of their day to get it done. If someone needs a microphone or a spam filter for our website comments or a flag for a microphone, either one of our generous listeners chips in a few bucks or we take up a collection internally.
If it gets done by P1, it gets done because somebody steps up and says "Let Me Help."
This is a Star Trek forum. Those words ought to be ringing a bell right now.
We understand that an audio format does not lend itself to ease of reference or inspection. We understand that our content is entirely inaccessible to STO fans with hearing impairments. We are aware that we are not the only podcast that has been asked to transcribe a show. We are aware that these requests range from polite inquiries to surly demands. We are aware that these requests are prevalent when devs are interviewed.
We are unaware of any effort in the community to organize either the time, talent or treasure to accomplish this task.
Priority One will be happy to assist in any concerted, community-wide effort to accomplish this. We do not have the personnel or the funding to take this on alone. If anyone wants to help us out, contact me via our website http://priorityonepodcast.com.

I sometimes listen in just for foundry stuff or dev interviews but I do not have time to dig through the whole thing to find what I wish to listen to.

You don't know what hard is until you've watched a 3 hour interview conducted entirely in sign language without captions.

You've been pointed, in this thread, at a free program that would make it a simple word editing job, and a pay service.
You don't need my skills when you have access to those.
And it's not hard.
While not exactly the same, I've run a company that had to create transcripts of our work.
In two languages in fact.
Transcripting verbal work is not hard if you try.
