personally I wonder, why do people always have more faith in other mmo but never in the one they are playing, or at least whose forum the are posting on. some weird grass is greener fallacy?
Because they want to believe and they haven't been hit by the hard, cold hammer of truth yet.
GW2 was supposed to be a revolution, like GW 1 before, age of conan, stalker and countless games I forgot.
And I'm just talking about AI. Otherwise you can add all the videogames ever made. After all, you never say "my game will be like any other, but I'll feed you with so much marketing you'll buy it anyway". That would be the truth, but it's not that good for marketing.
I totally expect EQ next to not be worth the hype. Just like with every others in the past.
So far, I was always right, I wouldn't mind being wrong for once.
I'll bet real money Cryptic views the Foundry as taking care of these points, at least the first 3 anyway.
I can't say I would disagree if they did. I mean do you play Skyrim? I have it on Steam, there's a ton of content on the Steam Workshop, and I would guess at least as much on the Nexus.
2+ years? I have never encountered the version of STO that was simply about unassuming fun and dynamic content. When I started (2+) it was all about grinding the three elite space STF's and maybe the exploratoin zone dailies if you wanted less gameplay. We have a bit more than that now.
What MMO... No, what GAME has "unassuming fun and dynamic" content?
Diablo II with its random maps, but still identical storylines?
Mass Effect with its linear mission flow? Or Mass Effect III with its multiplayer mode where you grind up to Level 20 and then can restart, fighting the same enemies on the same maps?
TOR with its class storyline and world storylines followed by some Raids you can do over and over again?
The so called "Grind" is what gives you the excuse to come back and enjoy the game's gameplay. It is something that most non MMOs are lacking - you go through the story, and the game is over. Gameplay was fun? Restart the game, if it was just okay, stop playing an do somethnig else. There is no game that suddenly creates completely new, exciting story content to explore. There are only games that create a scenario where repeating content gives you a few rewards - and these are the rewards are the excuse so you keep playing. And it is not simply the creator's excuse - it is your personal excuse, because you want to keep experiencing the gameplay.
If you get tired of blowing up starships and killing NPCs, then you are tired of the game's gameplay. That's okay. Do something else. You don't need the rewards of the grind if you don't really enjoy the gameplay anymore. And if you still enjoy the gameplay, the grind is not a problem, because it gives you the chance to experience the gameplay once more.
I can totally get being burned out of STO. I was, too and stopped playing for about 2 years. You can do that, too. Maybe you come back, maybe you don't.
And of course, if you come back after 2 years, and there are 3-5 new reputations for you to play, the grind isn't really so grindy - because every day, you can choose to advance in one or the other reputation. If you get bored by Dinos, you can go kill some Tholians, or do some STFs, or explore Romulos.
Only if you were forced to do it serially it would be really frustrating, because thereis a giant wall you have to climb, step by step, and you can't go off path.
Star Trek Online Advancement: You start with lowbie gear, you end with Lobi gear.
I for one am willing to invest in content that actually involves fun and not this endless cycle of grinding they put us through every time there is new content. STO has turned into Farmville in space, minus the farm animals. And I know I'm not alone, everyone is tired of the grinding and leaving for content they actually can have fun in.
If they implement such an idea as this, STO would actually feel like Star Trek again and we can play at our own pace. And players are most happy when they have fun by their own ways and not by what the Devs think is fun.
Like those attacking ESD and Qo'nos, those people going past the invisible walls to explore Starfleet Academy and the new Space Dock. People were having real fun. This is where the direction the Devs should be going, not Farmville.
The game is not out yet. People on MMO forums are amazingly gullible and always go ape over press release blurbs and gameplay videos. I'm sure before STO was launched they had a bunch of really exciting blurbs about what was going to be in the game that they were only kind of able to deliver, and there was some guy on another forum citing STO as the next big thing. Including, for example, the procedurally generated random worlds that probably sounded really amazing and were no doubt designed with good intentions but have turned out to be so anemic they're being taken out. Will this 'emergent gameplay' be the same way? Not everything is BS, some things catch fire and most don't. Time will tell.
That is how it works. Hype may turn out to be true to any or no degree. This does not mean anybody in particular is a liar, but lofty goals and good intentions tend to give way to real life. Until the game is released, naming it superior is really just a guess.

I still have a few videos of Jack Emmert hyping up the game on my YouTube favorites list. Most of it was BS, but all the game companies do it. I don't like it, but that's the industry for you.

I remember the hype behind TOR and how it was going to bury STO. I remember many fanboys and fangirls on these very forums saying that it would kill STO. I remember my friends in the game saying they were going to jump ship to TOR before it was ever released -- despite the fact I was in the beta and knew it was far from what people were expecting.
We see history repeating itself (and we often will) currently with Star Citizen. I wish the game well but never buy into the hype. Whether it's for STO, TOR, or whatever. Judge on what actually is created, not what is projected.
There's an old saying, "Don't count your chickens before they hatch." and that is equally true for all video games.

d2 got tedious after the first 2 play through on the same toon.
mass effect 3 was awesome for some bloody fun, put down mines all over the place, watch a pile of enemies nearby get blown to smithereens. head shot enemies heads off with the black widow am sniper rifle with hv barrel and scope. m500 shotgun to the head, or m99 sabre general purpose heavy nailing enemies. a few months after playing that the geth juggernaught came and it made ultimate difficulty far far easier to beat with the block shield ability. and dps killing things left right and center, occasionally melee attacking to recover hp by draining the enemies quickly. i left it to avoid getting bored of it quickly.
tor has a horrible pvp mechanic atm, too many imbalances to really be good, on top of a recently map huttball map which was very badly designed. the storylines are fun after the first few times but its all the same.
T6 Miranda Hero Ship FTW. Been around since Dec 2010 on STO and bought LTS in Apr 2013 for STO.
who told I was a fan? bad news they lied I don't care about cryptic at all. they disappear tomorrow I'll shrug and find something new to play. it's not like I'm hurting for choices.
it whiners will too much time and not enough brains that get my attention.
So you have nothing better to do then harrass people who are making a complaint, about a game they play and have been known to pay for, on a forum where they have every right to make said complaint?
Theres a word for what you are. But writing it down is a fraction worthy offense.
feel free to use that door over there, but as usual dont cause a scene on the way out in the form of an "i quit" thread. come back when you feel like it.
the devs have their own plan, we are just hanging on for the ride, wherever it goes. some want to intentionally let go because they dont like it, thats fine they chose between quit your howling and play the game or quit, but others will keep hanging in there anyways. whatever the case. exploration isnt coming back and the grind-o-matic train keeps going.
this is easily, the most incoherent, useless reply in the history of the forums.. the basic gyst of what the op was saying was, "wouldn't it be cool if sto used the emergent ai engine" lol.. shure there are some complaints here and there, but the op is far from the worst of the worst on these forums..
and you complain, about the complainers complaining, which in fact, makes you the very complainer you complain about.... chew on that one for a while lol... :-)
personally I wonder, why do people always have more faith in other mmo but never in the one they are playing, or at least whose forum the are posting on. some weird grass is greener fallacy?
Pretty much, though in some cases it might be more than wishful thinking, most of them... yeah.
I know such things would never happen, but I'll be honest here. I'd love to see some sandbox features in STO, and some AI revamping going on too.
In an ideal world it would go beyond just exploration. I reckon some sandbox features would be perfect for player owned fleets as well. Give fleets the tools to make their own content, perhaps even in their own little corner of the universe.
And the AI. It needs help, this we can agree on I'm sure. Enemies that think would be a boon, but I fear most would not welcome the challenge. At the very least have Borg adapt in space, so they are bought into line with Tholians and Voth (I consider those to be the most challenging to fight).

because I play several mmo's. currently I play three. different nights and what not. but, when you play multiples, you definatly see where certain mmo's are better than others.. so it would actually be natural for someone to have comments concearning other games they play in comparison to others they are playing..
I'll bet real money Cryptic views the Foundry as taking care of these points, at least the first 3 anyway.
What's better than having someone do your job for you for free? Cryptic: "Any thing you want to play, that we don't want to make, you can find in the foundry!"
You want some Trek like experiences? Go play the foundry!
You want some Trek like exploration? Go play the foundry! We just put a door in so you could!
In a game like Neverwinter, that hit the gate way more advanced than STO is, the foundry is just a great place to find Dungeons and Dragons stories.
In a game like STO, where the Devs struggle to even put together content that isn't crippled by bugs, it's just one more excuse for doing less than you should.
