I know that every game hypes its next awesome feature(s) and EQ is no different. However, some of the ideas from EQ Next seem ideally suited to STO and some sandbox / dynamic content for players.
Frankly I am sick and tired of the grind-wheel of running the same queued missions over and over again. I am tired of farming marks and dilithium. PvP seems to have fallen off even more. If it wasn't for ST IP, I can't see this game standing out in any appreciable way.
It is time for the devs to show where the money is going. Lots of money has come into this game and apart from LoR (which was heavily monetized) I haven't seen any fruit. Now that exploration cluster is eliminated it is time to go back and review some of those ideas that DStahl kept teasing us about.
I believe a more dynamic exploration system and revamped Genesis engine was high on that list. Come on Cryptic ... rise to the challenge! Surprise us on the upside for once!
"With the first link, the chain is forged. The first speech censored, the first thought forbidden, the first freedom denied, chains us all irrevocably."
Yeah, STO isn't much anymore but a themed grindbox for a while now. So they should get on the wagon if they want to remain relevant and competitive.
But I agree with regarding Everquest Next. While such a system likely would get rejected due to CBS, I really could see STO benefiting by providing similar development tools to the players. I could see the outer borders removed and players are allowed to claim areas of space to develop and create "new worlds and new civilizations". In away it would be like an upgraded Foundry where we could create the landscapes at the same time creating new buildings and storylines.
At the same time, the Dev Team could lock out areas of space where canonical factions are and develop them. Like the Sheliak in the far Alpha Quadrant or the Fen Domar that are halfway between Federation space and the Delta Quadrant border.
Unfortunately, this is something likely for the next STO.
If I had a nickel for every MMO that was going to revolutionize the MMO industry with some new feature...I could fund my own AAA MMO.
personally I wonder, why do people always have more faith in other mmo but never in the one they are playing, or at least whose forum the are posting on. some weird grass is greener fallacy?
if I stop posting it doesn't make you right it. just means I don't have enough rum to continue interacting with you.

I remain skeptical of the system and the ability of the developers to deliver. But at least it is a creative new approach. I don't see any effort here to do anything but more of the same. More grind and less fun.
I am simply asking for something more dynamic / sand box like in STO. ST IP is very much suited. As Azurian mentioned. This could be something like enhancements to Foundry and player controlled sectors which could be giant sand box environments for RP and doing random stuff.

I'm going to stop you at the words "creative" and "new" it is nether.
and how much are you willing to pay so everyone gets this things.

I have already contributed slightly less than $300 over a period of 1.5 years. That's about $20 a month. Others have contributed as much or way more. What is the result of this exactly? Less content ...
You can buy 6 full NEW games on steam at regular price or about a dozen on sale for the same amount. Those who have spent hundreds or thousands have gotten even less value. I would say this is a gold mine for devs!

that wasn't the question, I don't care how much you paid already. how much are you willing to pay to get these probably barely anything changes.

I feel that in return for the support we provide this game that we get new content and new features. For the most part, they seem to be looking for ways to generate more money via lock box and c store and now dilithium sink in crafting.
The only pure content I am seeing is the featured episodes and those now have some grinding of their own attached (witness the grind-a-versery). Is it too much to ask to get some new systems in game that can break up the grinds and farming.
I think not! An open ended sandbox game with a foundry tie in which replaces the lost exploration clusters would be an excellent option!

what are you talking about it is neither.. there is no other mmo on the market that has an imergent ai. not to mention all the other goodies eq next is rolling out (or trying to since it is not out and we don't know what will and will not work yet). everything they are doing is cutting edge and new, something no one else is willing to try.
I tell my friends, am I excited about eqn, yes, but, im more excited about what other gaming companies do with the new tech they are creating..
but I agree with the op, they are at least trying to break the cycle.. they sat down, and said how can we improve gaming, and take it out of this endless cycle it has been put in (well mmo's ). and they didn't shy away.
also, eqn is going to be free to download and play.. so zero money needed upfront, pay for what you want, and blah blah blah. at least that is what they have been saying the whole time.

keep in mind the have a lot of thing they have to pay for themselves, games don't come from or run on nothing.
also devs aren't robots they need to eat sleep and some of them have friend or family they have to check in on every once in a while.. oh and a few may even want to play the game themselves every once in a while.
if I stop posting it doesn't make you right it. just means I don't have enough rum to continue interacting with you.
Exactly this. I think we want to see something new. I understand monetization and grind need to be part of the equation to a certain extent. I also know that this MMO is hardily cutting edge. But it is no longer cash strapped either. How about they try to implement one of the things DStahl always talked about like a revamped exploration.
And no ... the incredibly grindy crafting with RNG dilithium sink with dilithium shortcut (obvious indirect monetization via exchange) is not the answer. Nice try ... but it is nothing but fleet and rep grind on steroids!

I for one am willing to invest in content that actually involves fun and not this endless cycle of grinding they put us through every time there is new content. STO has turned into Farmville in space, minus the farm animals. And I know I'm not alone, everyone is tired of the grinding and leaving for content they actually can have fun in.
If they implement such an idea as this, STO would actually feel like Star Trek again and we can play at our own pace. And players are most happy when they have fun by their own ways and not by what the Devs think is fun.
Like those attacking ESD and Qo'nos, those people going past the invisible walls to explore Starfleet Academy and the new Space Dock. People were having real fun. This is where the direction the Devs should be going, not Farmville.

cryptic like to make as much money off of as little development as they can.. this means that the game gets dumbed down, and watered down to make quick, easy content. sure sometimes someone makes something real nice, like an fe, or whatnot, but for the most part we get mindless mission grinds that they expect everyone to do day in and day out for years..
at least in other mmo's they try to make options so your not stuck grinding the same stuff over and over and over and over and over and over and over again.. lol...
like you I have spent a lot of money (I am someone who has spent near a thousand dollars in sto, and I do not feel that I have gotten my moneys worth. I kept putting money in thinking it would help make the game better, but instead it just keeps losing traction. I honestly have not spent a dime in a year. and will continue to spend no money till the game is elevated to something worth my time, effort and money..

I am tired of hearing this excuse over and over. I gladly supported them when I started and kept going until last December. Lots of others have supported with LTS, lock boxes and all kinds of other monetization.
Don't tell me that the ships or the lock boxes is what we are buying. That is pathetically weak excuse for content and quite cynical to boot. More featured episodes would be good but we know they can't handle more than 1 every 3-4 months.
So how about introducing an open ended game mode that will allow us to divert ourselves in between the limited content releases. We have paid for it time and time again!
Like I said, if companies can make fully featured games for 20-30 dollars then surely Cryptic can pull of something with the hundreds being pumped even by thousands of devoted players and fans.

Same here. I am glad someone is willing to look at this objectively. I don't regret spending my regular monthly quota. I do mind that they seem to be coasting and as you said trying to get away with the minimum amount of effort. We aren't even getting basic bug fixes.
It is time people realized that in this economy ... even $15-20 is big bucks!

emergent AI... I've been hearing games talk about it for at least 10 years... hell I sure if I looked some mmo probably has claimed it long before now.
every time I've played a game with "emergent AI" I couldn't see anything different compare to anything else.
other "goodies" have nothing to do with emergent AI. the game maybe be creative and new but emergent AI is not.

oh I love hearing the fan boys drop excuses like this.. "well, the game cant be good because it would cost too much to make it good" lol.. cryptic is a gaming company, star trek online is one of their products, if they cant keep up with the times, their product will become obsolete..
and honestly, I don't say this ever, but eqn is a game that is actually going to revolutionize the mmo gaming industry if it all works as intended. and they are bringing what im guessing his one of the most expensive games to make to the players for free.
the op is right, this game makes money hand over fist, and it performs at a slower pace, and slower development than almost every other game on the market that makes realistically less.. rift is a game that released literally almost the same time as sto. they just announced their 3rd expansion, and their game is 200 times larger than sto. they release content quarterly, and they have very few bugs to boot. and they are free to play now as well.
how long is cryptic going to keep making the same excuses, and crying poverty?

you don't like it? then you make it. I mean if it so cheap and simple you shouldn't have a problem doing it right?
how many hours have you played sto? I've played at least a few hundard and payed maybe 50 dollars. compared to game when they actually cost 20 dollars new. 10 was long. 50 was an epic.
keep in mind game new haven't cost 20 - 30 new in at least 5 years.

who told I was a fan? bad news they lied I don't care about cryptic at all. they disappear tomorrow I'll shrug and find something new to play. it's not like I'm hurting for choices.

name me a game using an actual emergent ai? ill download it and check it out..
eqn is claiming to be the first.. if someone else is claiming to have it, it is probably not it.. just a gimmick..
the team at eqn claims that the emergent ai is working, and I suggest you read up on what eqn is making, and compare it to anything you think is emergent ai before you insert your foot in your mouth.
no one else has it.. the biggest difference being, that eqn is the first game that will require a quad core system, it is coded to use it. and it is the first "non static" mmo (ie, the emergent ai). static meaning almost every npc is either in a single place, or on a predetermined path or cycle. the eqn emergent has almost no static npc's. they do not have respawn counters. and they have no predetermined place to be. the npc's react to the world, and go where they desire to be. there is no mmo that currently or ever has had this type of technology. you will not find one.. at best when I searched as I typed this, I found companies claiming to be working on one, or saying they had it, but it doesn't work, or it wasn't emergent ai.
as far as the other goodies, they are also things that no other mmo currently or ever has had. im not gonna get into it here, but you are free to use google and search it.. there are some great vidoes on you tube also explaining all the "new tech" they have created.

first... can you explain what it's like, from a players pov if you could, so I don't send you to a fake... I'm fairly sure most of them lied, I'm fairly sure eqn is lieing to, but I think that probably just me being me.

mac, it is a nice idea, and im all with you on it. but this is cryptic, they cant tie their shoes without bringing the servers down for a day.. the engine would probably never handle anything like that.. and they wouldn't know how to code it anyways hahahaha..

Why are you desperately defending STO? Seriously, you aren't actually arguing the finer points here just building straw-men arguments (make my own MMO ... LOL) or it is fake. And yes, 30 bucks is a lot of money. Plenty of good brand new games end up costing 20-30 in 1 - 2 months. Stardock has released a bunch of RTS / 4x games for around this cost. Even AAA - super popular titles cost around $60.
Compare that to STO where a 3 pack of 1 ship costs $50 in the zen store. I think my original point is that we need a new mechanism / feature to help fill in the void. A sand box mode with some kind of non static AI tied into exploration would check off a bunch of boxes for many fans.
1. Ever expanding / recyclable content
2. Open ended / sand box mode to balance grind wheel and rail-road gameplay
3. Something that feels like exploration ... you know what a ST MMO should have
4. Some content to justify our faith and support of Cryptic
I never understand why people feel the need to resort to personal attacks either. I am also getting tired of the "anti-entitlement" attitude / response whenever consumers raise concerns and request accountability from the vendor / developer. This is a product which is very deeply monetized.
It is also the only living / breathing piece of the Trek universe. We want it to prosper as a ST game and MMO. It seems like you want it to be relegated to obscurity and aspire to mediocrity!

There is something about this forum. Lots of great posters and friendly people. But a shockingly high number of people willing to defend the indefensible or attack on sight.
I don't get it either. Seems to me a kind of insecurity and overcompensation.

STO space combat is without a doubt, one of the most fun experiences I've ever had in video games.
I've cracked the code, what you think you know about space combat compared to me is like a group of 2k dpsers being god smacked by a 50k dpser. Ya, that just happened and your parser doesn't lie
Oh I wish I could put my skills to the test with a group of other like capable players. But there are too few that would warrant such an undertaking.
In all the mediocrity that is the easy mode yet excellently written end game of sto...i always get my enjoyment through space combat.
Space pvp has me hooked and set. It's just a shame so many people aren't willing to give it a proper shot
I know that every game hypes its next awesome feature(s) and EQ is no different. However, some of the ideas from EQ Next seem ideally suited to STO and some sandbox / dynamic content for players.

feel free to use that door over there, but as usual dont cause a scene on the way out in the form of an "i quit" thread. come back when you feel like it.
the devs have their own plan, we are just hanging on for the ride, wherever it goes. some want to intentionally let go because they dont like it, thats fine they chose between quit your howling and play the game or quit, but others will keep hanging in there anyways. whatever the case. exploration isnt coming back and the grind-o-matic train keeps going.
T6 Miranda Hero Ship FTW. Been around since Dec 2010 on STO and bought LTS in Apr 2013 for STO.
Yeah, STO isn't much anymore but a themed grindbox for a while now.
2+ years? I have never encountered the version of STO that was simply about unassuming fun and dynamic content. When I started (2+) it was all about grinding the three elite space STF's and maybe the exploratoin zone dailies if you wanted less gameplay. We have a bit more than that now.
Bipedal mammal and senior Foundry author.
Notable missions: Apex [AEI], Gemini [SSF], Trident [AEI], Evolution's Smile [SSF], Transcendence
Looking for something new to play? I've started building Foundry missions again in visual novel form!

But that was one grind compared to the 4 or 5 we have now.

I am simply asking for something more dynamic / sand box like in STO. ST IP is very much suited. As Azurian mentioned. This could be something like enhancements to Foundry and player controlled sectors which could be giant sand box environments for RP and doing random stuff.

I tell my friends, am I excited about eqn, yes, but, im more excited about what other gaming companies do with the new tech they are creating..
but I agree with the op, they are at least trying to break the cycle.. they sat down, and said how can we improve gaming, and take it out of this endless cycle it has been put in (well mmo's ). and they didn't shy away.
also, eqn is going to be free to download and play.. so zero money needed upfront, pay for what you want, and blah blah blah. at least that is what they have been saying the whole time.
and how much "support" are you willing to give to have them much this new game?
keep in mind the have a lot of thing they have to pay for themselves, games don't come from or run on nothing.
also devs aren't robots they need to eat sleep and some of them have friend or family they have to check in on every once in a while.. oh and a few may even want to play the game themselves every once in a while.

And no ... the incredibly grindy crafting with RNG dilithium sink with dilithium shortcut (obvious indirect monetization via exchange) is not the answer.

50 was an epic.
keep in mind game new haven't cost 20 - 30 new in at least 5 years.

who told I was a fan? bad news they lied I don't care about cryptic at all. they disappear tomorrow I'll shrug and find something new to play. it's not like I'm hurting for choices.
it whiners will too much time and not enough brains that get my attention.

name me a game using an actual emergent ai? ill download it and check it out..
eqn is claiming to be the first.. if someone else is claiming to have it, it is probably not it.. just a gimmick..
the team at eqn claims that the emergent ai is working, and I suggest you read up on what eqn is making, and compare it to anything you think is emergent ai before you insert your foot in your mouth.
no one else has it.. the biggest difference being, that eqn is the first game that will require a quad core system, it is coded to use it. and it is the first "non static" mmo (ie, the emergent ai). static meaning almost every npc is either in a single place, or on a predetermined path or cycle. the eqn emergent has almost no static npc's. they do not have respawn counters. and they have no predetermined place to be. the npc's react to the world, and go where they desire to be. there is no mmo that currently or ever has had this type of technology. you will not find one.. at best when I searched as I typed this, I found companies claiming to be working on one, or saying they had it, but it doesn't work, or it wasn't emergent ai.
as far as the other goodies, they are also things that no other mmo currently or ever has had. im not gonna get into it here, but you are free to use google and search it.. there are some great vidoes on you tube also explaining all the "new tech" they have created.
first... can you explain what it's like, from a players pov if you could, so I don't send you to a fake... I'm fairly sure most of them lied, I'm fairly sure eqn is lieing to, but I think that probably just me being me.
if I stop posting it doesn't make you right it. just means I don't have enough rum to continue interacting with you.
mac, it is a nice idea, and im all with you on it. but this is cryptic, they cant tie their shoes without bringing the servers down for a day.. the engine would probably never handle anything like that.. and they wouldn't know how to code it anyways hahahaha..
but I like the idea..

My PvE/PvP hybrid skill tree
feel free to use that door over there, but as usual dont cause a scene on the way out in the form of an "i quit" thread. come back when you feel like it.
the devs have their own plan, we are just hanging on for the ride, wherever it goes. some want to intentionally let go because they dont like it, thats fine they chose between quit your howling and play the game or quit, but others will keep hanging in there anyways. whatever the case. exploration isnt coming back and the grind-o-matic train keeps going.
Been around since Dec 2010 on STO and bought LTS in Apr 2013 for STO.
2+ years? I have never encountered the version of STO that was simply about unassuming fun and dynamic content. When I started (2+) it was all about grinding the three elite space STF's and maybe the exploratoin zone dailies if you wanted less gameplay. We have a bit more than that now.
Notable missions: Apex [AEI], Gemini [SSF], Trident [AEI], Evolution's Smile [SSF], Transcendence
Looking for something new to play? I've started building Foundry missions again in visual novel form!
But that was one grind compared to the 4 or 5 we have now.
