Having very poor connection to cryptic as of late

First, a warning: I am not very tech-savvy.

I live in Southeast Asia. Singapore, to be exact. I have a fibre broadband connection. Didn't have problems connecting to STO in the past, but in the past month or so I've been getting extremely bad lag that makes space combat unplayable from time to time. Netgraph shows my ping to be from 1500-2000ms during the lag spikes. The usual value is around 250-300ms, which to me is playable and expected since I'm connecting from halfway across the world. Funnily enough, the lag only applies to STO, I've had no problems playing other games on US servers, or alt-tabbing and going on other websites during lag spikes.

The 1500-2000ms latency strikes frequently, but only in space zones. Furthermore, I have occasional issues with connecting to the patch and account server, where it takes upwards of 5 minutes to log in, and another minute for the game to load. I've contacted my ISP about this issue, but they've only told me so far that they're investigating. I know it's not a problem on Cryptic's side as well, but I'm wondering if anyone here could help.

Attached are the tracert and nettest. I really do appreciate any help, if possible.

I'm also Starhub Maxonline, 50M up, and the game will 50% of the time go bonkers with lag. My current record is a 12,200 ms ping on Netgraph, but I've found that Netraph just locks up after anything above 2k and it's all the same. No control over the ship, I'll usually end up 40km away from the fight, random sporadic turns all the way. Usually this happens when I'm in Crystalline Catastrophe, or special events where there are more than 5 players on the map with lots of bad guys. At the end, if it's a queue mission, I usually get disconnected, though the reward is usually there waiting for me.

Oddly, the other half the time, it's 300ms all the way through. It's as if my initial connection to the instance sets the tone for the whole thing - when it starts bad, it never gets better.

Seems like it's affecting quite a few of us on Starhub. I'm on Starhub fibre myself. One of my fleetmates pointed out to me that we seem to be routing to a satellite connection.

I dunno anything about that but this only happen in the past month and I am having no problems at all on any other MMORPG, like Guild Wars 2.

Yeah, it's only been happening in the past month for me as well, and I have no issues with playing GW2 or Guns of Icarus on US servers.

EDIT: Apparently, it's affecting people from here playing Neverwinter as well.

EDIT no. 2.: Oddly enough, I can play the game fine if I use the EU proxy

MaxOnline fiber user as well. The same thing is happening to me. I've called Starhub last week and they're "looking into it" but so far I have not gotten a reply from them.

Intrinsical, have you tried running the gameserver via the EU proxy? That's temporarily solved the issues I've had with rubberbanding. Still hope the main issue will be resolved, though, as I'm basically just going around the other side of the world and adding on about 100ms of ping. I suppose there's something messed up somewhere down the pipe on the US East Coast.

I also have a problem with my launcher. It takes way too much time to connect to the holodeck server and sometimes my whole launcher becomes too slow. Any idea what's causing this?

I've tried switching to the EU proxy, but the rubberbanding remains unchanged. Also, I don't think its a simple network issue. The rubberbanding and lag only occur on specific map and instances. For example, if I encounter lag the a space battlezone instance or ESD (Space) map, most of the time changing to difference instance totally clears any network latency that I had.

This kinda hints that the network latency only happens on SOME of cryptic's servers, either because of some bad internal network config on Cryptic's part, or some of their game servers are overloaded.

For the past month or two, there are two gateway servers between me and STO servers, that has shown up in my ping testing. To have a 100% package loss, or sometimes it becomes 3 gateway servers to show that problem. This is the worse I ever seen for sometime.

I had a pretty brief period (about 2 hours) where I could connect normally, then the connection dropped completely again. Able to connect and play via the EU proxy, but with 400-700ms of lag on the ground, and 500-1200 in space combat.

I received a reply from Cryptic's tech support. They say its an ISP-to-ISP routing issue and all they can do is collect the data and forward it to the ISP on their end. We'll have to get Starhub to check it out on our end. Problem is all I can do is call Starhub's customer hotline, which I've already done but all I could tell them was "I can't play Star Trek Online, please do something about it". They promised to call me after they've figured out the issue but so far I have had no response. . Is there a better way of dealing with Starhub's tech support?

i connected to the EU proxy (I'm located in east EU) and i deleted the cache files. Seems i had some old map-info in my cache. Everything fine now.

Once you deleted the cache files, did you go back to not using a proxy? Because if not you didn't solve much.

Starhub got back to me, said it wasn't on their end, but they know the problem exists.

The tech downloaded STO and tried it out and had the same issues. Guess all we can do is wait >_>. Wish Cryptic would do a check to see if they can do anything, I basically can't log on at all unless I'm using the EU proxy.

Well... since we now know that:

    1) It is not our ISP's end that is having the problems (according to our ISP guys)

    2) It is not Cryptic Studios's end that is having the problems (according to Cryptic Studios)

    3) So the only logical conclusion why we are having this issues is....

Gremlins! They are Gremlins chewing on the wires! :D

I can't even login today... it just getting worst and worst.

Well, I guess I won't be playing STO for a while then until the gremlin had their fill and move on to something else. :P

Thought i was the only one that had issues. The game has some instances that cannot handle the lag, so we get kicked our/rubberbanding. I was told to stop whining on forums due to my countries bad infrastructure. Really so the ones in america getting bad lag spikes are also on a bad infrastructure?

I am getting huge lagspikes after logging in, and in the worst cases, takes 2-3 minutes to clear up, just to get hit shortly there after by another lag spike, but ususally in the 30 seconds-1 minute range...

Has been this way since after S8.5, so something is going on.

I play from Norway, having 40/40 fiber line, no proxies used, since proxies only make it worse, not better...

I have a sneaking suspicion that it's bad net code on that's the culprit, but not entierly sure, but something is not right...

Current issue is that I have very sporadic connection to the game server when using no proxies, but utilizing the EU proxy nets me a stable connection, albeit with 100ms more ping than usual.

Quick question though, does anyone else know if their communications are being routed through Cogentco?

Ultimately, the answer is yes, as STO is hosted on a Cogent Web Server Farm...

The lag and rubberbanding has reduced significantly this week, but it is not totally gone. Large space battles involving 20+ ships still cause massive rubberbanding, which means that content such as space battlezone, crystalline entity, starfleet base defence are pretty much unplayable. The occasional STF also lags and rubberbands like crazy too, but less often than before.
