On the Need or Greed options, am I being a mug for clicking Greed?
In some games, folks who click Need all the time get shouted at and called a loot ninja, but there doesn't seem to be any stigma attached to it here in STO. In fact, clicking Need on everything seems to be the norm.
I've been mostly clicking Greed, only going Need on items that seem a useful upgrade for me.
Should I always choose Need to get a fair share at the loot?
I'm just a fairly new player and I'd just like to know what are the social norms in STO group play.
I tried to "maintain" the habit of only "needing" if I really have use for something a long time after f2p, but ultimately... it only makes others rich and me poor.
I think thats kind of a matter of polite behavior and in other games I ensured people being kicked from guilds and teams for what is average behavior in STO.
Kind of sad. I gave it ultimately up when a member of my former guild reasoned with absolute confidence "I, of course, have need for all of that. Because I can sell it at the EC vendor or exchange and I need EC".
I don't know if he was stupid or trolling, but really from that point of a forgot about the greed button entirely.
... and this is why a system like Guild Wars 2 where every player gets their own loot is so much better.
Not only does it reduce the stupid fighting about who gets what loot - it lets people actually focus on doing the content rather than having to click a button every time something drops.
Agreed so far. Actually as team leader you can set the "loot mode" (not in STFs) and you can actually set it to behave that exact way.
IMO that should be the standard setting for random groups.
I would go so far as to remove loot drops entirely from missions and give the loot at the end in a lump sum.
The vast majority of the best equipment comes through stores so anything that drops is vendor trash. Would be so much simpler if the loot system was streamlined away from random floaty drops in space.
However, expecting Cryptic to actually improve the mechanics of the game is as likely as pigs flying. They would rather sell lockboxes and broken gimmicks.
True. Outside of batteries and repair parts there drops NOTHING of use. And those I can buy at vendors. I wouldnt mind if we just got one big bag of loot in the end instead of multiple drops in between...
Need is the new greed from what I know. For the longest time I always used greed on vendor trash I could get some EC out of, and need for stuff I could use. But I never got anything I needed. These days since the best drops only come from getting first place in a fleet action or grabbing it from reps/fleet stores, I just need everything and have done with it.
When in group play like the MU event when it was running I need only on something I need otherwise I just pass.
I get enough drops from other solo sources to meet my EC needs as I am not one to go for the lock box ships on the exchange, except for the occasional mirror ship for a bit more choice. The only other thing I have bought off the exchange are a couple of traits, which are relatively cheap.
I usually hit greed if its not something I need the first few times. If I see one player just hitting need for everything then there is no point in hitting greed. I then start hitting need for everything as well.
This is only in PUGS. For fleet events I follow whatever rules my CO lays down.

at this point everything for anyone lvl 1-49 is useless and garbage cause it only takes about 2 -3 days to hit level cap and investing in anything before hand is useless and a waste of EC and just about everything that you could possably get from loot drops are imidiately surpassed either by fleet gear or from the reputation stores so everyone just needs on everything as its pretty much there EC source and little else, i will generaly only do greed stuff when with folks i know and pass on anything for newbros
If I'm in a Fleet Alert pug with a low level character, I think it's courteous to "Pass" on the low level gear. That player might actually get some value out of the drops, and half of it wouldn't even be worth anything to me anyway.
Otherwise, I try to go with the flow of whatever group I am playing with - which in the majority of pugs, is Need.
Ehh, I normally don't need on anything unless I know I can get a decent price through vendor or exchange. The bigger ticket items like Warp Cores, Deflectors, Shields, and Engines I'll roll need on and maybe the rare item that has good stats. Normally just see a lot of junk like green or blue weapons with lack luster stats, I just pass.
Can't have a honest conversation because of a white knight with power
Of course, it depends on the mission, but generally it's Need in this game and I don't want to hear any complaining about it.
Two reasons: it's all trash, trash = EC.
Yeah, and what if it's actually a upgrade for someone? Unless it's a very good purple with great stats odds are you aren't going to get much if even vendor value. Oh I forgot greed = need for many people...

But but,... It's all trash.
If you're upgrading in this way, you'd be better off shopping for greens and blues, or even foundry farming. The stuff we're rolling on is vendor trash, click greed if you really don't need any more EC, otherwise, everyone else (all of whom will be needing EC, and every little bit counts) will be rolling need.
I'm a vet of many MMOs, and I understand loot decorum, but this game is different. It's not like we're rolling outside of our class on bound items or anything. Click need and let the dice fall as they may.
In some MMOs, there are class specific drops that around bound just when they enter your inventory. It would be a huge waste for someone to Need roll on a Very Rare that is not for their class because they can only vendor it. In this game, there is no such mechanism and all those drops can be sold on the Exchange, thus not wasted.
My limited experience shows everyone Need rolling.

I press need every-time for all gear dropped and I let fate decide the rest.
Nice and simple. No fuss.

the same item is likely for sale for like 6K on the exchange and there are 5 pages of them listed.
And if something that drops is an "upgrade" for them, they really shouldn't be in my elite mission with their cruddy gear.

When in a group with people I know, I use the loot system like it's supposed to be used, or whatever the team decides on in the beginning.
