Time for STO's ingame GMs to step it up!

stardestroyer001stardestroyer001 Member Posts: 2,615 Arc User
So I just completed an exhausting "discussion" (more like pointless arguing) with a disrespectful player. I won't reveal the specifics, but basically it was a flamefest which was started solely by the other player.

Unfortunately, this isn't just a one time incident. All across the game, trolls and flame starters sit in wait for people to prey on. And frankly, I think this is quite common in MMOs and the Internet in general.

What surprises me now are the Game-Masters that are supposed to be ingame, monitoring the chat, and enforcing the Terms of Service on-the-spot. We have excellent volunteer moderators on the STO Forums (kudos to Askray, Q, and the rest, thank you for your volunteer efforts!), but I regret to say I haven't seen anywhere near the same level of competence from the GMs in the game. I have NEVER seen a GM in the chat box, let alone see one stop a troll in action.

I know the technology exists to monitor the chat box without being logged in (XMPP, Pidgin, etc being examples). So it's not like Cryptic/PWE doesn't have the infrastructure. It's simply the lack of GMs around, or they aren't doing their job.

Smirk, I ask you to please talk with your GMs and get them to participate actively in current social hotspots (ESD, Qo'noS, the Battlezones, etc). I don't think it's right for people to go unpunished for breaking the ToS and starting flamefests and troll sessions, and I don't think I'm the only one who has this problem.

My nickel (Canada no longer has the cent). Thanks for your time!

If Cryptic did something about trolls then a certain fleet would not exist.

I have never heard a confirmation that this game even has active GMs monitoring the game.
STO is about my Liberated Borg Federation Captain with his Breen 1st Officer, Jem'Hadar Tactical Officer, Liberated Borg Engineering Officer, Android Ops Officer, Photonic Science Officer, Gorn Science Officer, and Reman Medical Officer jumping into their Jem'Hadar Carrier and flying off to do missions for the new Romulan Empire. But for some players allowing a T5 Connie to be used breaks the canon in the game.

    Why should they?

If they had to intervene every time someone is 'insulted' or 'offended' they would need an army of GM's, and it'll never be enough.

The Internet has been around for a long time, and being the optimist I am I like to think most have a basic idea of how to stay safe online, and how to deal with such problems on their own.

IIRC, if multpile persons are ignored, it can trigger an investigation. But you'll never know anything about it anyway. What happens with other people's account and what moderation actions are taken are never shared by Cryptic.

To my knowledge they dont actively monitor every singe chat channel and zone. it would be a mammoth task on top of their usual requirements as Gm's. if you have a problem, then report the individual person and they can isolate the problem. its highly inefficient to have anyone just sit in chat all day 24/7 on the chance someone breaks the rules.

plenty of people talk to each other in disrespectful ways or swear but have no problem with it and dont feel the need to report it. if you have a problem you need to let them know.

That was your mistake right there.

While yes it would be nice if moderation was more active that is unlikely to happen. The next best thing is the ignore option or simply leaving the zone.

Its not worth causing yourself stress over some of the morons in sto or on the internet in general.

Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, there you have it--I think the testimony of the witness speaks for itself:

    • One is anti-social if one does not use the /ignore function.
    • One is justified in flaming another person by virtue of having declared said other person to be "anti-social."
    • Banning someone for telling a Gorn joke is a visible and sure symptom of mental illness--no matter how rude, vulgar, crass, or generally unsavory that joke might have been (not to mention offensive to those players who choose to play a Gorn character).

I stand abashed that I had no clarity as regards these facts before. There exists no doubt in my mind that if I abide by these princiiples I shall henceforth be a better person and a more valuable contributor to my municipality. Would that we might all do the same, yes?

I think the guy you quoted is one of the trolls who used to hang around ESD before the urban beautification project came through and cleared out the rednecks.

Also, I think that telling a Gorn joke SHOULD, at this point, be a bannable offense. They're REALLY getting old, people.

i completely and totally agree with this. The amount of people trolling the game is unbelievable. And it isn't just in the zone chat it is also with the party poppers and other stuff. The in game moderators need to start clamping down on it and it is more then obvious that they are either not doing their job properly or not at all.

Earlier on today i was on ESD and in zone chat a player was glorifying **** and saying that people should be grateful that they had been chosen. This was completely disgusting and was subsequently reported. But yet the moderators did not step in or anything. Same with the feminist, racist, discriminative, homophobic comments that plague zone chat.

And when it comes to the part poppers its beyond a joke. i have managed to narrow it down to the same 6 people and they stand in ESD in different instances and set them off one of the other. They have also found a bug which allows them to setthem off one after the other without any cool down. so in 5 mins about 4/5 of them will go off constantly. And since the new ESD has come out it has gotten even worse with the ESD been flooded with them in near enough ever corner. thankfully this has only happened 3 times but it is going to get worse the more the trolls come back.

And if the they do start banning trolls we will see the end of TWO fleets, SP and SFD (im sure you can figure the initials out) and their very close relationship with the DEVS.

    STO has Game-Masters? or In-Game mods??? O_o

i mean i never thought of it. but i would LOVE to have some in-game moderators be flying around. and fixing stuff. or settling arguments (even if this would take hundreds of mods and probably isnt their job)

but at least some troll controlling or AFK penalty giving.

--Party poppers are mildly annoying at worst, but this? This is horrible, and I hope that sick f*ck gets a permaban.

--I don't think SFD is tight with the Devs. The devs seem like decent people, unlike the trollbois that frequent the fleets which I shall not mention for TOS reasons.

Anyway, yeah. I support a crackdown on trolls of all stripes.

it would cost a bit to run, it would require round the clock staffing, and to keep from being burned out. you would be looking up at least 20-30 people, 10-15 people in-out a day so keep them fresh.

this has been discussed on the forum a while back and nothing came from it, nothing will come from this one either. besides the chat has worked like this since STO came out of beta, it still works like this. unless there is some serious serious issues going on in chat that means things require the likes of a mod to come on and sort it out, but i just dont see it happening.

one thing you need to consider is having some restraint to deal with the situation, when dealing with these types of trolls and you know it wont go anywhere, dont bother continuing the coversation if for everyone they see the same thing with enough justification for not needing to defend one self, just let the troll babble on, trying to insult you and such, not that it matters one bit. if you do go for the insults, then you failed.

i dont put people on ignore because to me the ignore feature gets abused too easily, besides im not cowardly enough to hide behind a filter because the conversation got bad or because some person thinks im a moron, makes no difference to me. if a person has a point, they can express it but as hypocrtical as we humans are i can deny that like anyone else.

Dude, my ignore list is 15 pages long.

The mere fact that I've ignored THAT many people for:

--Racism, sexism, homophobia, and conspiracy nuttery

    --Straight-up jerkdom

--Hateful abusiveness above and beyond garden-variety RSH-ness

--Openly bragging about deleting bugships and posting the video on YouTube

is a really, really bad thing. I shouldn't HAVE to use the ignore button this much.

Also, Gorn jokes suck, are unfunny, and are getting REALLY old. Sorry to burst your bubble.
